Liturgical art and sacred music commission

Thank God for our Holy Father Benedict! He is trying to correct multiple abuses that have crept into our worship and liturgy for decades. There is one Catholic “Church” in my particular neck of the woods that fits the “modern” Church architect to a “T”. You would actually think you might be in an auditorium. There is one statue in the front but off to the side of Mary and Child that is almost invisible. The altar is barren. They keep the tabernacle in the back of church down a hallway and ?. Actually, I can think of 2 churches like this and the other one is really quite beautiful as when you look onto the altar, you look out to the tree laden grounds as it is all glass behind the altar…but no sign of Christ on the altar. The natural beauty of the grounds is beautiful and was created by God, but it is not “God.”

And how wonderful it would be to get back to sacred music and not folk music, or soft rock for Mass.
 
It will certainly be nice to have this new commission. Thank the Lord for Pope Benedict XVI!

Let’s go further. Past just blatant abuses, let all mediocrity and relativism be eradicated.
 
This is wonderful news!

But … I wonder how it will be implemented on the parish level, especially in existing buildings? Will the team show up and raze an ugly church? Will they catechize choir directors, retrain choirs and burn the hymnals?

Tabernacles are semi hidden, leading faithful on a real treasure hunt and sacred images are almost inexistent. The new commission’s regulations will be written up over the next few days and will give precise instructions to dioceses. It will only be responsible for liturgical art, not for sacred art in general; and this also goes for liturgical music and singing too. The judicial powers of the Congregation for Divine Worship will have the power to act.

the bold part, that is where the problem lies. after VII, many Catholics decided that the Church is what they wanted to be and not what she is.
can this still stop the bying of that ugly building in California?
 
I wish many parish churches would be razed!

As to the music, could it be possible that the Mass would be the Mass and that any and all sung portions are the Mass itself? Please, God! Let us save even “Holy, God” and “Ave, Maria” for occasions outside of the Mass itself. A few moments of silence would not harm any of us – perhaps we could focus on the altar and on what is happening there.😉

Oh I sincerely pray that our music once again be elevated to something worthy of the Sacred. But didn’t the USCCB reject “Musicam Sacrum” and the directive to involve the laity in chant in favor of what we are currently using? You know, the banal songs that sometimes are even theologically incorrect?

We dedicated our new church about three years ago. Our former pastor, who oversaw the project to completion, had no say in the original design - he came on board after a complete architectural mishap and changed as much as he could to conform to a more orthodox church. But it’s always about the $$$$$ !! There was only so much he could do, and altho I praise the fact that he gave us a sacred space with a huge crucifix hung on marble over the tabernacle, placed just to the right of the altar, we still have numerous things to contend with. Like daily Mass, which is said in the chapel at the back of the nave which has one complete side of glass that looks through to the altar. So if we want to acknowledge the Presence of our Lord in the tabernacle when we enter, we must first genuflect there, at the glass side (altho it really is a separate room), then bow to the chapel altar, and of course, turn our backs to the tabernacle while Mass is being said.:hypno:

You cannot make these things up! 😃
