Liturgical Dancers

Well, there may be other denominations which permit liturgical dance…

But it is not approved by the Catholic Church during the Mass.

(I’ll bet those slinky liturgical dance costumes are pretty pricey, too, ay?)

The Roman Rite parish we attend (in the absence of a Byzantine Rite parish, and instead of going to the local Orthodox church) used to have Liturgical Dancers; in fact, my daughter was in the troupe and was considered to be among the best of them.

It was not limited to a specific troupe; when she was in 7th grade (attending our parish’s school), the entire 8th-grade graduating class performed a unique (I’m being charitable here 🙂 ) bit of choreography as part of the Mass offered at their Commencement.

As you might guess, the pastor at the time was quite liberal, both politically and liturgically; the principal of the school (who remains in office) is equally liberal. The new pastor is an older man coming late to the priesthood (a widower with grown children), and he has brought an element of dignity and ceremony that has been not been evident in our parish ever since I converted to Catholicism over 20 years ago. A new principal is not on the horizon - yet. (Deliver us, O Lord… :gopray: )

Did I enjoy the liturgical dance? Well, yes, when my daughter was dancing. 😃

Did I think it had any place in the Mass? No, but then no one ever asks my opinion.

Am I glad it’s gone? Most emphatically yes! 👍

Will I object if someone tries to reinstate it? You bet your asperger I will!

Pretty awful, isn’t it? No I don’t attend this parish. I don’t even live in the same state. 😃 I personally have never witnessed a clown mass (check it out) or liturgical dance, and I hope I never do!
Good golly, that sure is jolly. JK–I cannot image what (but I can guess who) possessed them to have a clown mass.

My wife attend RCIA at a Church (same Church we were married at) that had liturigical dancers. Of course, they were modern and I was lost in the Dark Ages (which ages are those again?).

In charity, I believe the dancers believe they are doing God’s work; but in reality, it is just plain silly.

Can’t believe this thread is still going, oh well, anyone ever heard of River Dance the musicial ? some should as it was running for awhile in New- York.

At my parish we have people from all over the world: Korea, Viet Nam, Phiilipines, India (St Thomas Catholics), the Carribean, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, many Hispanic countries, African-Americans white folk.

The only litugical dance we have, occassionally, is by the Cameroons who dance and sing in kind of procession to bring up the book of the Gospels and to bring up the offertory gifts. We also have a Cameroon choir, most of whom participate in the dance. It is very moving and reverent and fits their culture. It does not come across as out of place or some kind of performance drawing attention to the dancer or dancers like other attempts I have seen at liturgical dance, which have always left me feeling uncomfortable and looking for an exit.

Ugh–those dancers in the photos look like some enactment of a futuristic faux-religion in a sci fi movie. You know, where they have done away with religion but figure “the people” need it so create a new one.

Hmmm…

As Saint Paul says, “who has bewitched you Galatians”?

All I can say is “where are the Bishops”?

We do not have liturgical dancers at our parish and I don’t think I’m aware of any in our diocese. Thanks be to God!

One way of dealing with things is to get in the spirit of things. If someone wants to make things bad, help him out by making things even worse.

We can safely assume that the dancers, the clowns, the gymnists, etc. despise us, who are members of the congregation. We should turn the other cheek and be charitable to them.

We can show our appreciation to the dancers by showing the same appreciation we would show to dancers at a strip club. We can hoot and howl, yell take it all off, etc.

We can loudly comment on what we like about the clowns costumes, ask the clowns what tricks they are going to do, and yell out about the hot body of the guy in the vest.

We can applaud the performance of the gymnists. Ask for more tricks, and loudly express our concern that they don’t fall and injure themselves.

Get in the spirit of things. Be charitable and recognize these things for what they are. They are done to entertain the congregation.

Saw liturgical dance once. Barefoot sixteen year old girls running up the aisle before the procession like it was an olympics opening ceremony.

Never saw anything less reverential in my life.

In a circular modern church - with no kneelers of course.

We used to have them when our previous pastor was still here. They even recruited kids from our parish school to participate. Every time my kids were asked, I would always write a letter explaining why they were not allowed to participate, with documentation attached showing that the practice was illicit. To no avail, of course. (I mean that they still did it, but not with my kids involved)

Thanks be to God, we have not have any liturgical dance since shortly after our present pastor arriived.

For something that “hardly ever occurs” this Thread is certainly an anomoly. It is, without a doubt one of the longest running, longer than many TV series, and has one of the highest # of posts. It seems to have a life all its own.
The one that gets the prize is the one about "smithsonian and the Book of Mormon. I think the Mormons BOUGHT the Thread from CA and have installed automated posting generating software. Well over 500 Posts, and running 24/7. I mean, really, how many questions can one have about the BOM?? Or any other fairy tale. They must be exegeting every last verse.
I’m off to find a “liturgical dancing” smiley.

HEY TNT, dont you know that liturgical dancers as well as bare naked ladies reading from scripture and all the rest are allowed by the Vatican, as long as, as they saying goes in the legal profession “it is usual and customary”. Forget it, I was getting bashed on another thread about kneeling to receive our Lord, getting called a “showman” or something, you think you are going to get people to really think that dancing in the aisles, as long as it is approved by the so called GIRM , is going to excite and rile any of the new breed of Catholics anymore? Heck, bare breasts at half time on the super bowl ,cursing on TV, church, ahh anything goes now, That is why I go to the TLM, I know that I am doing what is respectful to our Lord as close to what was handed down by the Apostles as I can get to, heck, people say well the GIRM says this and the GIRM says that, for that matter abortion is legal in the US but I sure as heck know right from wrong no matter what the GIRM says,

The Bishop of the Sacramento gave Liturgical Dancers the big thumbs down. No dancing masses in my area. His decision seems to be a good thing 👍
