I love the Sicut Cervus!!! The church choir I used to sing in did this and when I got married I asked that they sing this as one of the preludes since we couldn’t really fit it into the liturgy.

Yes of course, but they have a huge selection. They have all of Richard Prouix’s music, which I haven’t been able to find anywhere else, plus all the Catholic Classics series.

I’m not saying all their stuff is junk, I’m just saying be careful what you pick. They do have a lot of good stuff too. (ie, Just because GIA sells it, doesn’t mean that it is liturgically “safe” to use)

It will be interesting to see what happens to the Mass of Cremation (a popular epithet in organist circles) when its new translation becomes available. As for Mr. Haugen, he wrote his Mass when he was an ELCA Lutheran. Since then, he has joined the United Church of Christ which, to my knowledge, has no similar liturgical traditions.
The Mass of Glory is simply awful, particularly that little pause in the Eucharistic Acclamation ("… and driiiink (pause) this cup…" - it seems like a little bell or wood block should be struck at that point!). Artificial gospel is simply phony, and the theological realities which our hymns try to enhance deserves something better than dated tunes seemingly taken from 70’s television commercials.

That would be interesting to see. I didn’t think of this before, but I don’t believe I’ve worked with or have known any church musician who actually likes the Mass of Creation. Whenever I’m working with a music director/organist from different parishes and I ask them what mass setting they use at the church, it’s always, “Well, we typically use x setting, but for funerals/weddings we’ll use the MoC because most people knows it.” Then it’s followed by how they don’t like it. The other response I get when I list the mass settings I know (I don’t bring up MoC) is, “Thank goodness. I usually have to pull out the MoC for some of these outside cantors because that’s all they know.”
I think one of the reasons a lot of church musicians don’t like it is because it’s so over-done and was seemingly pushed to be used everywhere. It’s not that it’s so awful, as we have all heard and seen really horrible mass settings much worse than MoC, but because it has become such a go-to mass for use almost everywhere at least where I am. Fortunately, it’s not used so much in my diocese due to the fact that they were trying to obliterate it from the repertoire within the diocese. But everywhere else around that diocese it is still used, especially for masses such as funerals and weddings.

I personally prefer the Mass of Remembrance. It is the second setting in Gather. I use it for ordinary time, the use Mass of Creation for Lent and Advent, all except the Agnus Dei.

I know that Mass of Creation is always used at my parish for funerals and weddings. I don’t get it.
Out of any of the settings in the OCP missals (yes, I know MoC isn’t licensed by OCP), I thought Heritage Mass would’ve been the most familiar to everyone since it’s the oldest setting.

I don’t think many around here know the Heritage Mass, but nearly everyone (in my experience) knows The People’s Mass. I would love the People’s Mass over the MOC any day.

I think that A Community Mass by Richard Proulx might be older. It’s certainly a lot better.

Yes, community Mass is also pretty well known and certainly more dignified than MoC.

People’s Mass is beautiful. Too bad all the Mass settings in the OCP missals are done by contemporary composers (Haugen, Canedo, Hurd, Schutte, Farrell, etc.)

I’m so grateful you posted this. I am helping out with music ministry now (I’m a newly hatched Catholic!) and this week the lady I’m working with introduced me to some new music and I was feeling really unsteady. Being able to hear how the parts are supposed to sound is SO helpful!!!
BTW, we are playing the parts from the Mass of Glory. I don’t even know what that means exactly but I’m just learning so it’s all new to me! Either way I’m super excited to participate in music ministry and even more so now that I know what it’s supposed to sound like!

I perfer minor keys to the Major Keys. If I ever had a choice of which song to do either in major or minor, the minor key settings would always win out. There’s just something mystical and deep with the minor keys that are lacking in the major keys.
