I’m not sure about the website you linked in which company publishes that version.

If its the Catholic Book Publishing Company, $169 is too expensive.

Go here and get the Catholic Book Publishing Company, which is the most common one used in the USA.

I have the Four Volume set, but I used the single version, Christian Prayers The Liturgy of the Hours, for many years before biting the bullet and spending the money for the 4 Volume Set.

The difference with the Four Volume Set is the Office of the Readings are more complete.

However, most working people only have time to do Morning and Evening Prayer, so the single volume is the same as the Four Volume Set and its all you’ll ever need.

FYI, the website I linked above, you can buy both versions of the LOTH, but this site provides you with the LOTH prayers everyday along with instruction on how to use your breviary. It also offers a free audio on how to do the LOTHs.

I bought mine about 4 years ago and found the Walmart online site to be the least expensive.

The link I provided in the post actually takes you to Amazon.com, where you can get the 4 volume set for $124.15.

Thats the cheapest I’ve seen anywhere.

I would also advise going ahead and buying the vinyl covers that go with them.

Jim

I bought mine on Ebay and paid about 75$, a great deal! And they were brand new. 🙂

I have a 4 volume, with covers for all of them, and I love it. Got it as a gift, so don’t know the details.

You can get the 4 volume in black leather or 4 color imitation leather…the real leather is more expensive.

Thats great.

The only better deal than that was my wife getting a 4-volume set for free. Used, but still in good condition.

I bought the 4 volume set in leather on Ebay for $110. They were used but well taken care of.

I’d like to point out again however, that for most Catholics, the single volume, Christian Prayer The Liturgy of the Hours, is all they’ll ever need.

Few of us have time to do the complete Office of the Readings on a daily basis. Instead, we generally do Morning and Evening Prayer, and there is no difference between the two.

In fact, one advantage of the single volume is that it includes the music to the hymns. The 4 Volume does not.

The single volume new is around $35.

So, don’t let the cost of the 4-volume set stop you from getting into the Liturgy of the Hours.

The LOTH is a treasure that shouldn’t be missed.

True, but I do the entire LOTH, including the Office of Readings. The Office of Readings, having its origin in the lengthy night prayer of Vigils in monasteries, is a true treasure in itself, especially if prayed as Vigils in the early morning or wee hours of the night.

For those concerned about the cost of the entire set, I bought mine (in French) with the cost spread over an entire year, by buying each volume just prior to the liturgical time it covers.

I own both the four volume set and the one volume set. I actually paid the four volume individually, each time I would go to the nearest Catholic Bookstore and pay for one of the four and if they had to order for me, I would use my one volume set. But, now I have given my one volume to my little sister who wishes to be Catholic.

I think why I love the four volume is the office of readings, but also when it is a feast day for a certain Saint or Solemnity for Jesus or Mary, there are special readings that you would not get in the the one volume.

But, each person is different, I sometimes do not have the time for the office of readings or daytime prayers, but even so, I would love to own the four volume so if I do have the time (which is almost always) I will be able to deepen my knowledge of the Church and of my faith.

I got really lucky at an antique co-op and found the one volume The Office of Readings published by the Daughters of St Paul in 1983 for $20 and its in great condition.

With that and Christian Prayer I am set.

Well those and the Carmelite Proper.

That’s great, but I would advise that people stick with the Christian Prayer, The Liturgy of the Hours, by Catholic Book Publishing.

The reason being is that their breviaries are the most commonly used and should you ever find yourself joining a group that prayers the Divine Office, you’ll more than likely have the same version.

A woman showed up at our OCDS group with the version by the Daughters of St. Paul.

She was not able to use it with our group when we did Evening Prayer.

Most priest in the USA have the 4volume set by the Catholic Book Publishing company.

I agree, get what the group uses.

Only my Office of Readings book is from the Daughters of St Paul and I do that privately.

I have the Christian Prayer which I’m using to learn how to do the hours.

I plan on joining the Lay Discalced Carmelite Order which use the 4 volume set for the readings.

My mother has the 4 volume set and loves them.

I plan on getting one at a time as the season approaches.
