If you like to pray the Office or Liturgy of the Hours, you can get the whole Office cheaper . The Daughter’s of St. Paul have a version of Christian Prayer that contains the complete daytime office. The Liturgical Press version only gives you week (I)one of the midday prayer. The DSP version gives all four weeks. The cost is about the same or in 25 to 30 dollars range. I haven’t bought a new book for years, so I don’t know the actual cost. You can then order the Office of Readings. It is an entire complete book on the night prayer which use to be called Matins or Vigils. The cost of this book is also around 30 dollars. Thus, you have a complete set for half the price. You must learn the structure of the office to use it smoothly. This is done experiantially. Also, you can order the Liturgical Press version of Christian Prayer that has the music for all the hymns. It wiil cost another 30 dollars unless they sell a music section seperately. But even if you have to pay full price for it, you will have an extra book for visitors to pray with you. You don’t need the music, but it helps to know the melodly of the hymns.
You can also get a version of the old Office, which is much more rigorous. All 150 Psalms are said in one week, sorta Benedictine stlyle. The new Office allmost does it in 4 weeks. The old version is use by the Fraternity of St. Peter and other more traditional groups. They can be found in English or Latin or a combo of both.
I encourage praying the Prayer of the Church. You will submerge yourself into Scripture, living the Liturgical Year. Not a day will go by that a reading from the office, especially if Mass is also attended, will not affect or infect your daily activities. It will teach you the Scriptures. You will find yourself repeating verses and more easily praying from the heart. It will help you to live more fully your Catholic life, by intensifying your Holy Communion, by helping you to avoid sin, by increasing your desire to practice Charity, by longing to know the Saints more personallly, by immersing you into the Seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter like never before in your life. I can say much more, but maybe I’ve already said to much. Holy Mother Church longs for the laity pray it’s prayers. If this is so, then it is the desire of Jesus, Himself!! Start ASAP. What a power house our Church can be if we just keep our focus on Christ and thus His Holy Church.
Blessings and Peace, JoJo
