If you like to pray the Office or Liturgy of the Hours, you can get the whole Office cheaper . The Daughter’s of St. Paul have a version of Christian Prayer that contains the complete daytime office. The Liturgical Press version only gives you week (I)one of the midday prayer. The DSP version gives all four weeks. The cost is about the same or in 25 to 30 dollars range. I haven’t bought a new book for years, so I don’t know the actual cost. You can then order the Office of Readings. It is an entire complete book on the night prayer which use to be called Matins or Vigils. The cost of this book is also around 30 dollars. Thus, you have a complete set for half the price. You must learn the structure of the office to use it smoothly. This is done experiantially. Also, you can order the Liturgical Press version of Christian Prayer that has the music for all the hymns. It wiil cost another 30 dollars unless they sell a music section seperately. But even if you have to pay full price for it, you will have an extra book for visitors to pray with you. You don’t need the music, but it helps to know the melodly of the hymns.
You can also get a version of the old Office, which is much more rigorous. All 150 Psalms are said in one week, sorta Benedictine stlyle. The new Office allmost does it in 4 weeks. The old version is use by the Fraternity of St. Peter and other more traditional groups. They can be found in English or Latin or a combo of both.
I encourage praying the Prayer of the Church. You will submerge yourself into Scripture, living the Liturgical Year. Not a day will go by that a reading from the office, especially if Mass is also attended, will not affect or infect your daily activities. It will teach you the Scriptures. You will find yourself repeating verses and more easily praying from the heart. It will help you to live more fully your Catholic life, by intensifying your Holy Communion, by helping you to avoid sin, by increasing your desire to practice Charity, by longing to know the Saints more personallly, by immersing you into the Seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter like never before in your life. I can say much more, but maybe I’ve already said to much. Holy Mother Church longs for the laity pray it’s prayers. If this is so, then it is the desire of Jesus, Himself!! Start ASAP. What a power house our Church can be if we just keep our focus on Christ and thus His Holy Church.

Blessings and Peace, JoJo

A GREAT resource for those attempting the Liturgy of the Hours (it is EXTREMELY complicated, although not rocket science!) is THE DIVINE OFFICE FOR DODOS by Madeline Pecora Nugent. It is available through the Confraternity of Penitents (www.penitents.org) on their gift shop page:

penitents.org/giftshopdodos.html

Although it appears to be expensive ($19.95), it contains a coupon for a free set of markers and ribbons and instructions on how to use them to keep track of the Office.

Good luck!

The Office is EASY to use. privately. Don’t let anyone tell you different. If nothing else, just do weeks 1-4 in rotationand forget about the feasts and solemnities and memorials and whatnot.
If youare not saying the same psalms as they do in Rome on a particular day, who cares ? It’s still a great way to pray.
And its a terriffic way to pray in community. “Prayer groups” die because they require people to prepare and organize and stuff. Never mind that stuff; just say the office togethr; quick, easy, in union with the rest of the Church.

I recommend the 4 vollume set. Just get the vollume presently in use, for the season of the year, at this time it is vollume #3, then every 3 -4 months, when a new vollume bsgins, get that one. This way you only buy one book at a time. I also bought an extra set of ribbons with each vollume, it makes it much easier to find your place.

The majority of people do not say the complete Office. They might get in the Morning, Midday, and Evening prayer?. Spending over a hundred dollars for this is not very thrifty when you can get the Christian Prayer from the Daughter’s of St. Paul that has the complete set of daytime prayers for the entire year! It is all in one book that is reasonably easy to use. It also has readings that are generally longer than those in the four volume set. I have prayed it for years, It also has the Psalter for the Office of readings with a scripture index for each day of the year, for a two year period. It, also, has many good non-biblical readings…Father’s of the Church, Saints…etc. There are no major differences in the one compared with the four! The four volume set attempts to make the flow easier because it is stretch over four books. The DSP version has enought ribbons to create a good flow for the hour of prayer. When you are ready to spend more time with the Office, then you can get the Office of Reading book. It is the entire Night Office for the year. I just want you all to know that you don’t have to spend 100+dollars just to say the Church’s Holy Office. Therefore, you can spend less than 30 dollars and enjoy the Prayer of the Church. It takes alittle practice and perseverance. The Prayer should flow smoothly, uninterrupted except for meditation periods. If you visit monks at monasteries, you see how important it is to pray the Office and not just say it!!! Although some of the Psalms may seem not applicable, it is for the entire Church, The Mystical Body that you are praying for, and the Church applies it’s blessings to the lost and needy in the world. You can learn alittle plain chant and pray twice with singing. You thus carry on the ancient tradition of singing the Hymns, Psalms, and Canticles. Try getting up some Saturday morning at 3:00AM and in the quiet of the night, Like the Trappist Monks, and Pray the Office of Reading for the Virgin Mary. It seems to be hard, but I tell you will receive your reward from Her Spouse, The Holy Spirit. I have not heard out there thru the threads, anyone;s love for the Office. As a new comer, I want to say …Love the Office, as you love the Holy Mass. The Mass is the heart of the Flower while the Office is it;s Petals. God Bless you all with love for these precious gifts given to us for blessing to our souls. They are sure to lead us to sainthood; just persevere with an unwavering love and you will oneday find contemplation and union with your Beloved Saviour.

I agree with this wholeheartedly!

Does the Daughters version print the antiphon at the end of a psalm when there is a page turn mid-psalm. That really irritates me about the CBP version-- having to flip back a page to get the antiphon again.

Yes. One can say the LoH to the best of one’s ability and let it go at that. But to say it “in union with the . . . Church” requires doing it as the Church does. It really is something anyone can do correctly – with a little effort. And it is SO rewarding! Why would you WANT to ignore feasts and solemnities and memorials?

I personally prefer the 4-volume set but your advice is sound. Many religious communities use Christian Prayer. It has everything except the complete Office of Readings – my favorite office.

And that 3:00 a.m. thing you suggest? You betcha! There’s nothing like it!

No. It prints the antiphon only once.

In answer to the antiphons being repeated at the end of the Psalm, so if you turn the page, you don’t have to go back? The DSP version repeats the antiphon at the end of each Psalm, but not at the end of the Canticles of Mary and Zacharia. But you have a card that you can use for these to stay in one location. Many times the Antiphon is from the Proper and thus the card becomes very handy. There is also a card for the Invitatory Psalm. The DSP version does not repeat the antiphon in the Office of Reading’s Psalter.
For those of you who like praying the Office of Readings, there are Canticles in the appendix of the Book of Office of Reading or of the four volume set that can be added as another nocturn or extended prayer for all Sundays of the year in all the seasons and special feast days. Check it out!!

With my bishops gracious permission I use the british version. You can get a one volume version that has the whole office except the Office of Readings. The collects are much better translated, the hymns are more traditional and useful for chant, and no annoying psalm prayers.

Why didn’t you just ask the bishop to use the Roman Breviary? That was the Breviary that the Inquisitors from the 1570’s onward!!!🙂 I thought you wanted to be an Inqusitor.

In the full 4 vol LOTH you don’t, but in the Catholic Book Publishing version of Christian Prayer you do-- probably they omitted it in the interest of space.

I know an Episcopal Priest who prays the Office using the four-volume Latin edition of the Liturgy of the Hours ! Cool! :yup:

Hi all:
Oh, get the four volumn set. Pray “everyday” as much as you can!!! What a joy. Today there was in the Office of the Day the instruction of St. Louis, King of France to his son. Fantastic. You are missing soooo much if you don’t try. It is the “official” prayer of the Church. You are praying with the “whole” Church!!! If this “ole” lady could learn how ANYONE can. EWTN have morning and evening audio. Check in at anytime - that will help you learn. There is an audio each day by the Monks of Adoration - they even give you the page number!!! Don’t miss out on a real joy and “daily” comfort and instruction. Shorter is seldom better!!!
Mary, Seat of Wisdom, pray for us.
Peace on earth to men of good will.
