Hi,

I read the liturgy of the hours every day. Specifically the Christian Prayer condensed version. I’m interested in the expanded four volume version. Can anyone tell me how they like it? Is it harder to use? I like the condensed version because I can carry it with me most places I go. The four volume edition seems cumbersome.

God bless,

The four volume version is good. It has all the Office of Readings so you are able to do another hour that you can’t usually find in the condensed version. The breviary for the four volume takes a little time to get used to navigating through it. After a couple of weeks you start getting the hang of it. Lastly, although there are 4 breviaries each one is about the same size as the condensed ones. They are also divided by seasons so you are only using one of them at a time. With that being said, I don’t think carrying it with you would be a problem.

God Bless,
Matt

Hmm. Thanks for the information. I was afraid they had divided up all the hours by volume! 🙂 I’m thinking about purchasing them since I get so much out of the condensed version. I usually do everything except for the Night Prayer and the readings.

Thanks agian,

to me the Office of Readings is my favorite. Our seminarian that is at our parish right now and I have had lots of discussions about it. He and I both get a lot out of that particular office of the day.

Well I just bought volume 3 and 4, the ordinary time. I’m looking forward to getting used to the expanded format.

Thanks for your posts. 🙂

I just transitioned this past year, after doing the condensed version for the past 10 years or so.

If you only have time for morning and evening prayer, stay with the condensed version, its the same as the four volume, and there is as much flipping.

If on the other hand, you want to begin including the Office of the Readings, then its worth it. The Office of the Readings in the four volume set is beautiful.

BTW, my wife found this site to have the four volume set at the lowest price. $130, and I believe it includes free shipping.

Thank you so much for the link. It cost me almost as much for the two Ordinary time books. I’ve returned the books I bought and will order from the link you provided.

God bless, and thanks again.

You only carry one volume at a time. The four-volume LoH is good because it contains the full Office of Readings. If you are not planning to pray that office, then you would not need the four-volume set.

If you decide to go for it, however, do yourself a favor and get a copy of The Divine Office for DODOS*, *click on the Holy Angels Gift Shop) due to appear in a new edition at the end of June. 👍

Buying one volume at a time will in the end, cost more than buying the entire set together.

Also, I haven’t checked but you might be able to buy a used set at amazon.com for less than half the price.

Either way, for me, saying the Office of the Reading in the morning, is too long, so I only do morning prayer, which is required for Secular Order Carmelites. Being that’s really the only difference between the condensed version and the four volume set, unless you plan to do the Office of the Reading, which is usually the first hour of the Divine Office, the condense volume serves well.

That being said, the Office of the Reading, when I get a chance to do it on week-ends, is beautiful, and you really want the four volume set for this.

I am hoping to enter a Monastery soon and will need the complete set of the Liturgy of the Hours. I have searched and searched, and a used set is the same price as a new set. the above link to ThyKingdomCome does seem to have the best price. If anyone come up with a less expensive price for the 4 volume set in Used or New. Plewase let me know.

Does your community not provide this for you? Or do they ask that you provide your own equipment. If you are going to be using this for the rest of your life, you might as well go for the best quality edition you can find. I recommend leather, since it will hold up for decades. I have old breviaries that belonged to priests who used them for more than 50 years – in the days when priests actually prayed the full office.

Hold off buying any versions of the LOTH. !

Monasteries usually use their own sets, which are in a two week cycle, where the 4 Volume Set as well as the Christian Prayer, is a four week cycle, and the wording of will be different.

The Monastery I am hoping to enter asks that we provide our own 4 volume set.

not really, you only carry one book at a time, and they are about the same size, I like the 4 vol simply because of the expanded readings for OR and it keeps me more on track with the liturgical seasons. but I have the 1 vol at work so I always have it at hand (I owned it before I got the 4 vol as a gift, which I cold never have purchased on my own.).

when meeting with Oblates and other groups that pray it together we use Shorter Christian Prayer, and I use that in the summer when I travel.

The order is the Monastery of the Visitation in Toledo Ohio, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Mary this is not a new order. The order of the Visitation was founded back in the 1600’s by ST Francis De Sales and St Jane Frances De Chantal. The particular Monastery I am praying to enter is almost 100 years old.

I just received my set yesterday, and I’m really enjoying it. I also do the day prayers, and it seems as though they readings are different than the ones provided in the condensed version (I haven’t checked them all, but this is nice since the daily prayers can get repetative).

Travelling and vacation time always make it more difficult for me to get it in the time I need for prayer. I tend to reduce my prayers to morning and evening during such times.

What a source of blessings. 🙂

God bless,
Ut
