Hey Folk’s,

I have a question on living with your significant other. My question is that if I went to a priest and said that even though we are living together we are remaining chaste until marriage. would that still be wrong. It’s not like it’s happening now to me I’m just asking for future reference. Like would I literally have to go to confession and say that we are sleeping in the same bed but not having sex?

It is still wrong due to the “near occasion of sin” and due to possible scandal.

would that still be wrong.
Yes.
Like would I literally have to go to confession and say that we are sleeping in the same bed but not having sex?
Yes, you literally would. This creates a near occasion of sin and can be the sin of scandal depending upon circumstances.

So, do not cohabit with anyone and you will be on safe ground, morally. Set your will to holiness right now and rule cohabitation out as something you will even consider.

:confused::confused:

Why would you put yourself in that situation? In the same BED? And you think you could stay chaste until marriage? Do you really enjoy self-torture, or tempting the other person to sin? You are supposed to help your future spouse get TO HEAVEN, not sin!!!

I am literally speechless.

I had friends who did this (moved in together, but said they weren’t having sex), and NOBODY (not even me) believed that they really waited for their wedding night. The message everyone around them got was, “Everyone’s having sex outside of marriage, even the Catholics.”

And the excuse they gave was stupid – “we can’t afford to live separately.” Seriously??? They both have family in within a few miles of their home, and they couldn’t live in the spare room, share a bedroom with younger siblings, live with their married cousins, sleep on the couch – just for a few months to a year!

Choose chastity firmly and support yourself and your beloved in this choice. It’s the best preparation for marriage you can make!

First of all, your living with your significant other prior to marriage would most likely be a stumbling block to those around you. Let’s just suppose you *could *remain chaste until your wedding night; would you canvass the neighborhood and let them all know? What about the mailman, who may be yearning to learn more about the Catholic Church. What will he think when he delivers your National Catholic Register to your home, but also notices that the mail coming to that address goes to a couple with different last names - they are unmarried! What impression will that give him of the Catholic Church? This is just a “what if” kind of thing, but you never know who might be observing your actions. And what about the people at your church? Will you sit down with each of them and explain your intention to remain chaste? Do you really think anyone will believe you?

I don’t say any of this to be judgmental or harsh, I’ve absolutely no right, as I have been there, done that. Which brings me to my second point, it doesn’t always work the way you think it will. Not long ago I met a really nice Catholic man. He asked me to marry him. I said yes. He was going through a very contentious custody battle with his ex-wife and said we would have to wait until he got custody before we could actually wed. He invited me to live in his guest room until the wedding. I moved in and everything was very proper for the first 6 months. However, three years later his custody suit still had not been settled. And do you think we were still being true to our vow to remain chaste until the wedding? Of course not!!! The road to hell is paved with good intentions. (As a side note, this man and I are no longer together and I am happy to say that I am back in a state of grace and in full communion with the Church.)

Statistics show that couples who cohabitate are less likely to marry than couples who don’t.

Don’t do it, I guarantee you will be glad that you wait to move in until you are validly married.

Bless you.

Hello!

Well rather than yell at you as some have done, (hey people, I love Latin, Mantillas, and praying the Rosary as much as any other trad, but let me tell you that screaming is a great way to give a bad impression 😊) let me tell you about my situation.

I’m in an abusive family situation that is VERY hostile to my religious beliefs. I am the only Catholic, and that just “gives a reason” for the abuse I’ve endured since childhood. I’m also currently financially dependent upon my parents, due to only recently having graduated college. (debts, bad economy, etc etc although I do have an interview soon, and possibly a job if God wills it.)

My fiance, who is amazing, and is taking RCIA and is REALLY growing in his faith (I can’t believe how much just a couple of months has changed him!👍) is close to having his own apartment and is able to be financially independent. He is a kind, generous, intelligent, and amazing man.

I am also considering co-habitation, but only with a dispensation. However, let me tell you right now that a dispensation is a very long shot, even in my case.

Only you know all of the reasons you want to live with your future spouse (and if that person does not want to be a future spouse but wants to live with you…RUN). If you want to live together, get a dispensation.

If you are granted a dispensation, it is still an irregular situation. You must both agree to live as brother and sister, sleeping in separate rooms, and possibly it might be a good idea to get a good Catholic roomie. It would probably be a good idea to go to weekly Confession as well. You are still causing scandal**, and living in near proximity to sin.

However, please think this through. As amazing as Mr. Serrano is, and as much as I love him and would love nothing more than more time to be with him, I have many reservations about living together with him. Mr. Serrano is a good man, but both of us acknowledge that not giving into our desires (we may not be having sex, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to!) would be extremely difficult.

In any case, before you move in with someone, ask for a dispensation, and be open to whatever the Church in her wisdom tells you. If you are not granted a dispensation, don’t be bitter, but take it in stride, and don’t take it personally.

Co-habitation is extremely difficult- I’m a product of co-habitation. It has the potential to complicate the **** out of everything. Even if you get a dispensation, it will be difficult to live with that person in such an irregular situation. The temptation to act as if you were husband and wife, even in non-sexual matters, will be great.

**About scandal: Okay…here’s the thing. Nowadays, if you go on more than three dates, everyone assumes you’re having sex. Having been with my fiance for nearly 4 years, EVERYONE thinks we’re having sex, and it doesn’t matter at all what either of us say. I’m so sick and tired of hearing everyone tell me about condoms it isn’t even funny. The only satisfaction I get is when I tell them that not only am I virgin, neither me or the Mr. are ever going to use condoms, birth control, or anything other than NFP in grave circumstances. So when people go on the whole “what will others think” argument, I tend to roll my eyes. Yeah, whatever. People think that first comes sex, then comes a possible commitment, then comes a baby, and a few years down the road perhaps a court marriage comes a long just in time for you to divorce. It doesn’t matter what people think…however if this is a stumbling block to people I’m perfectly fine with reiterating that no, I’m not having sex.

No, I’m still not living with Mr. Serrano (yet/possibly if we are granted a dispensation), and no, we haven’t had sex. If I do live with Mr. Serrano, I will explain the dispensation, what it is, might possibly give a reason for it being granted depending on who is asking, and will do my best to show that we are indeed trying to follow Catholic teaching.

I will say this again, though: I don’t particularly relish the idea of living together before marriage, dispensation or no, and I don’t recommend it unless the circumstances are very very very dire. Be open to whatever decision the Church makes, and accept Her authority.

And yes, if you do just up and live together before marriage, you will have to go to confession and arrange that before receiving the Body and Blood.

If you’re just doing this for financial reasons, let me tell you- if God wants your marriage to happen, it will happen. Just pray and work hard, and you will be taken care of. Don’t lose faith even when you don’t feel it.

Hope that helps!

I really don’t think that any priest is going to give anyone a dispensation just so they can move in together even if it is platonically at least any good priest who follows the magisterium of the church.

it depends. do you want to play games with the priest or do you want to give him all the information he needs to give you pastoral counselling that will actually help you.

I only know that when we went to our Priest to begin the marriage process, he asked us if we were living together, and explained that if we were, he would require us to separate for six months prior to the marriage to try and regain some of the marital bond that would have been damaged by our cohabitation (I can’t remember how he said it, probably much more clearly). He didn’t ask about marital relations, just the cohabitation.

We weren’t living together so it wasn’t an issue for us.

My dear, not all married couples share the same last name, and for someone to assume a couple unmarried because of that is slightly ludicrous. Heck my grandmother had mail delivered in her maiden name till she passed away.

Also, the whole scandal thing, I think people who think about whether or not someone they know is sexually active are worrying too much about things that are not their business.

I am also considering co-habitation, but only with a dispensation. However, let me tell you right now that a dispensation is a very long shot, even in my case.
What on earth makes you think you could get a dispensation to co-habit with a man outside of marriage? No faithful priest would even consider such a thing! Any priest who would give one would be guilty of grave sin.

Perhaps, but until the Church gets rid of the sin of scandal, we have a responsibility to avoid it. A lot of sins could ve “other people’s problems” but that really isn’t the message of Christ either way.

True you are right, and I do not want the OP to sin either, but people (in real life, not on this forum) who speculate on the sexual sins of others for gossip are a pet peeve of mine.

Perhaps the OP if he has to live with his girlfriend/fiancee can at least have separate rooms? The scandal element would still be there but separate rooms in the same house is way less temptation than the same bed. Remember, you’ll get to (hopefully) sleep in the same bed as this person for the rest of your life.

There is **no such thing **as a dispensation to cohabit. I can’t imagine where you got that idea.
**About scandal: Okay…here’s the thing. Nowadays, if you go on more than three dates, everyone assumes you’re having sex.
That is not what the Church means by the sin of scandal. The sin of scandal is something very specific, not just assumptions on the part of random people.

The sin of scandal is **not **about “what others think.”

Scandal is a serious sin against the fifth commandment:

It’s the norm now for Catholics to live together before marriage. Most priests actually expect it now. Most priests will just turn a blind eye and marry the couple so that they are no longer living together without the sacrament of marriage.

Most priests now see couples coming to marry as an opportunity to evangelize.

I want to extend thanks to everyone who took time to post. I really made the original post because I wanted to make sure. I’m completely fine with not living with my future spouse until we are married. I don’t expect anyone to go easy on me. Even though I think I could manage, it would be hard not because of sex but because I couldn’t show that person how much I loved her yet, I wouldn’t get a lot of sleep. I just want to do whats right in the Lord’s eyes, I understand that even today couples live with each other before marriage, some do refrain from having premarital sex, but priest shouldn’t turn a blind eye, they should say the way it is for being a Catholic. But the idea of having a roomie is good. I was even thinking it might be ok if we were to live with my folks because I’m living with them now. But that is still a no because it is still under CoHab right?

This would be something to discuss with your priest. I can envision some extreme circumstance where it might be necessary for a family to take in a fiancee temporarily, but no not under typical circumstances.

Why the fixation on finding a way to live under the same roof before marriage?
