NFPWife, are you outside the U.S.? If I read your post right, you suggested a Church annulment be sought and then a civil annulment/divorce? I’ve heard in some countries it’s done differently, so I’m curious. Here in the U.S., one must have a final civil divorce decree before applying for annulment.
I’m in the US. I didn’t suggest anything to the OP other than seeing a priest. I said what I’d do personally if I uncovered fraud or deception. That would include consulting a lawyer and taking whatever process was necessary to get a civil annulment. Personally, I’d want to be made as whole as possible, legally.

I don’t think they could get a civil annulment, but would probably have to go for a divorce. And, reading your response about being whole and legally I remembered something that tripped an alarm from the OP’s posts.

It seems like no matter how much money the husband is making it is all going into some familial black hole. Maybe there is some serious debt from the business the brother and husband had and that is where the $1,500 wedding gift money went. Maybe they’re just insane spenders. Maybe he is sending money overseas to his child or children. Who knows? But no matter what is going on I hope the OP makes sure that she is legally protected from any debt he may have. Since she seems ignorant of the financial situation better safe than sorry!

Not a “civil annulment”, but an annulment with the Church.
Please get out before you become pregnant and feel more stuck. Please, please!
And please don’t allow yourself to be manipulated by soft-soap.
You already have enough proof that it is self-interested.
This man isn’t your husband. He has no idea of how to be a husband so the contract he made can’t be valid. And quite clearly he doesn’t love you. He loves his family but not you. Please wake up to reality, write everything that has happened down, ready to present to a marriage tribunal for assessment.
Go home and get any kind of job, waitressing, cleaning, anything, to start earning something of your own, if you can’t get anything through your college degree.

This sounds like a very strange situation, and I am so sorry that you have found yourself in it. I don’t know what is going on with your husband, but it sounds like he is neglecting some of the most basic responsibilities of a husband, such as making you the most important person in his life, establishing a household with you, and establishing shared finances. And that makes me wonder if he even understands what marriage is, and what responsibilities go along with it.

Based on what you have written, I think it would be worth talking to your parish priest (or any other knowledgeable priest whom you trust) about the possibility of getting an annulment. It just sounds to me like your husband might not have entered the marriage with the correct intentions of truly being committed to you and of fulfilling his wedding vows.

For sure there are a few grounds for a religious annulment, and possibly grounds for a civil annulment too. This guy obviously had no intent of entering into a marriage of any kind. What’s with the ex? A friend with benefits. Run, do not walk to the priest and a divorce lawyer. Don’t let the priest talk you into staying. Your “husband” is a weirdo and you can never know how that can turn out. My previous admiration for supporting his family has disappeared when you said he gave your wedding gifts away. With twice the salary he still can’t support a marriage. Run, girl, run and don’t look back.
I wish you better luck with your next relationship.

I forgot to add that we still talk every day. There have been days that I have not answered his calls because we have argued and I feel tired of it all. He always blames me for moving out of his house and coming back home to my family, but I had no job there to stay somewhere else. He accuses me of abandoning him when I really didn’t have another option. He always says that other people talk behind our backs because I left and that it seems ridiculous (I don’t really care what they say because they don’t know what was going on). I did talk to him twice weeks before leaving about how I felt. And I didn’t plan to leave, it just happened after the problem I had with his brother since they kept leaving him with me at home while my husband was working and my mother in law was hospitalized. I tried to help but leaving us alone wasn’t a good idea and even his uncle told me to not stay with him because he could become aggressive.

I really love my husband and I entered this marriage with the best intentions, wanting to have a family, serving in church and being together til death.

I know all of you are right, and my family tells me the same things, to move on… but for me it is hard and I pray to God to please guide me because I want to do His will. I pray for this door to close if it’s not meant to be, or for my husband to realize what he is doing and to change the negative things. I guess that’s hope.

Thank you all for reading and for you advice.

There appears to no potential for the marriage to normalize. Your husband has been crystal clear with you as to where he believes his loyalty, resposibilities and priorities lie, and they are not with you! You now need to do the same for him and be clear and tell him your bottom line, and the actions (divorce) that will follow should he not meet that bottom line.

I would be deeply concerned about what appears to be deception and a lack of good faith shown by your husband in entering in to marriage with you.

The guy and his family are bad news and probably just looking to take advantage of you.

Princess,
The Catholic Church gives annulments for marriages that have not existed from the very first day, even though the parties think they are married. While some of this is semantics there are some really good reason for annulments: fraud, deceit, and no intention of remaining faithful.
From everything you have written it seems that your husband never intended to be in a marriage. I’m not sure why he married you when he lives his life like he never did. You want to save your marriage, but I don’t think one ever existed in your husband’s mind. Your biggest problem now is falling out of love which can be very hard. You are in love with the man you imagine your husband to be, not who he really is. You should seek professional counseling to find out why you are still in love with a man who is so abusive to you. He may not beat you but he is mentally abusive. He is also blaming you for the comments his friends and family are making. Blaming others is the hallmark of an abuser. You need to get out of this situation before his bullying ways make you lose all perspective on this and you come to believe it is your fault. Start by not talking to him. My previous advise still stands. See a priest and a lawyer for an annulment.

I think you have problems that are too complicated and important to rely on finding the answers in an internet forum. Consult a Catholic priest and ask for a recommendation for a marriage counselor. You and your husband need some solid advice.
