Jimmy Carter won 10 of the 11 states of the old confederacy in 1976
Yep. A candidate from Georgia after the Nixon debacle.
But in all of the other elections the vote in teh ddep South went against the democratic nominee for a half-century

Religious free exercise is subservient to gay “marriage”.
There’s no conflict between religious liberty and requiring places of public accommodation to serve gay people. If you feel your religion is more important than your business it should be an easy choice between the two if the requirements of running your business interfere with your faith.

Perhaps we should ask their victims about it. It seems to me their labor helps pay for their room and board, the location of which they determined themselves

The ultimate strawman.

BTW, the Democratic Party was the only political institution in the entire recorded history of the civilized world to say that slavery was not only good for the master but the slave as well, as D’Souza notes.

Since you are so righteous on the issue of slavery, when should we expect you to forever not association yourself with such an entity?

Our electoral system only allows for two major parties, and of those two parties the Democrats are more likely to put an end to modern slavery.

This is something of a derail in a cake thread, not sure which pro-discrimination poster started it. I’ll stop continuing it.

This is not true.

Slavery and forced servitude still exists in parts of the Muslim world and the Democrats religion of political correctness prevents them from moving to stop this.

Not so the historical anti-slavery Republican Party.

And that is because racism lost its stronghold in the south, and more and more voters drifted to the Republican Party in response to the progressive shift of the Democratic Party even dating back to Wilson

The GOP can help with that. It isn’t a question of one-or-the-other.

I think the vast majority (one might say accurately virtually all) of Americans reject slavery.
While Imachine’s comment is not borne out by the history of the two parties, I think modern Democrats and Republicans agree on the historically Republican position opposing slavery, to the point that accusing one party or the other would tolerate it today is simply a slanderous lie.

To server PEOPLE no, but there is no moral requirement to provide services for an EVENT that goes against their religion.

Events are not people.

The issue is not not serving gay people, Any homosexual can walk into his baker and buy a loaf of bread, or rolls, or a dozen muffins, or even a birthday cake for his mother that said “Happy Birthday Mom!”. So clearly the law is NOT being broken. The homosexual person can purchase goods. Gay people are not being denied services because they are gay.

What the customer wants is the baker to participate in a particular EVENT, one that goes against their religion. They want the baker to produce a message, one that goes against his religion. That is where the conflict is.

And again I say that the state must deny individual business owners the ability to selectively choose not to serve those they personally dislike.
Where in the article does it say that the baker personally dislikes anyone.

The baker finds an ACTION to be immoral, but that is not the same thing as disliking the person who is committing the action.

Yes. But there is a clear effort on the part of today’s conservatives to re-write that history as a means to deflect from their sorry present standing on racial equity and social justice.
As though current voting patterns do not tell the story.

The decisive point in that progressivism-induced drift was the civil rights era. The demographics of the current party affiliations make that all to clear.

The South’s systemic racism has been curtailed - in significant part by continuing actions of the courts. But the fundamental narrative of white-race supremacy has yet to be expunged. It is difficult to read the threads since Charlottesville and miss that point. There is continuing justification where there should be metanoia.

Does the Gaystapo operate on the same principles as the Blackstapo and the Catholicstapo?
I don’t see the Catholic Church threatening people with physical violence and financial ruin when they don’t fall in line with the Church’s teachings. Do you?

Not to mention people on this forum explicitly stating that they should be allowed to deny service to someone for any reason they like.

I don’t want to belabor this, but those civil rights laws passed in the 50’s and 60’s because of Republicans, not Democrats. As good a man as Kennedy was , he sided with the southern Democrats in 1957. It was Nixon who got that legislation passed.
Blacks shifted to the Democratic Party starting in the 1930’s, not because FDR was a champion of civil law rights ( he wasn’t, he was a racist and a bigot), but because of the New Deal. There is no “big shift” based on race. That’s propaganda.

The baker denied a gay couple a service she would provide for a straight couple.
The baker did not want to participate in a gay “wedding”. Requiring to do so violates his first amendment rights. Requiring him to do so is discrimination.

The baker refused one customer* the very cake *she would been willing to bake for another customer. You can’t do that.
