BEND — Father Liam Cary, a priest of the Archdiocese of Portland, has been named the new bishop of the Baker Diocese, which covers central and eastern Oregon.
Pope Benedict’s appointment was announced March 8 in Washington by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, apostolic nuncio to the United States.
Bishop-designate Cary, 64, succeeds Bishop Robert Vasa, who was named coadjutor bishop of Santa Rosa, Calif., in January 2011 and took over leadership of the diocese last June.

We visit our children/grandchildren in Bend. St Francis seems like a great parish.
Bishop Vasa left the diocese in good shape, uh?

I notice in the bulletin that there is no principal @ the school, but a Head Teacher. Assuming the pastor is in charge. Seems like a reasonable way to set up a Catholic school.

The Diocese of Baker covers 2/3 of Oregon, basically the area east of the Cascades. Bishop-elect Cary spent much of his youth in the town of Prineville so is acquainted with life in that part of the state, which is largely rural and even remote. The diocese has 31 parishes with resident priests, who also cover an additional 28 missions.

Yea! It looks like he was ordained at 45 years old! There is hope for us all!

Wonderful! I lived in Baker a lonnng time ago. It was a wonderful experience, but I would
not have wanted to spend another winter there!
Haha I grew up in eastern Oregon, land of horizontal snow! This is great news for the area. Our priest said a prayer of thanks yesterday that Baker now has a great Bishop

Hopefully the Baltimore announcement will be soon . . . praying for a good shepherd!

This was great news for my family, as Fr. Liam Cary is my uncle. Came as a HUGE surprise for all of us, including him. He will do a great job, though, and we’re all very excited.

A little video to introduce him to you all, made by his former parishoners at Sacred Heart in Medford, OR:

And the church’s YouTube channel, which includes some of his homilies:

How wonderful. I am praying for a Holy and Faithful new bishop for our El Paso Diocese.
Please remember us so that our Diocese be as blessed as your Diocese.
