My first thought was “That has to be expensive”… Then I read the article and yep !! $22.50 for what is less then 4 oz.

One cow gives gallons and gallons of milk each day… Human females don’t even come close to that quantity… Even if it were appealing to the taste buds  (??), it’s too expensive.

There are some cattle vector diseases that humans share. But humans do not share all cattle diseases, and those that are shared are not all that hard to screen or eradicate. All humans share all human diseases (with a very few exceptions). Some are very difficult to detect or eradicate. They can screen these women all they want, but somebody is going to contract something horrific from this…one of the reasons the use of wet nurses died out. It was a terribly unhealthy practice.

Completely aside from the fact that this is extraordinarily creepy as a concept, I wouldn’t touch this product under any circumstance whatever.

My wife nursed our children and none turned away from her. Mother’s milk is better for the child: 1. It’s fresher. 2. It’s cleaner. 3. The cat can’t get to it. 4. It’s easier to take on a picnic, 5. It comes in such cute containers.

So, Why not as ice cream? 😃

Mothers are getting paid good money to donate, and it hurts no one. A bizarre market initiative, but apparently it’s tasty! I’m almost tempted to jump on a bus and try some, although I’d probably vomit regardless of the taste.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for mothers breast feeding babies. And yes, the containers have considerable aesthetic appeal.

I’m not so impressed with ingesting the body fluids of strangers, however.

At first I was trying to figure out if I supported the legality of such a product. I suppose if it is tested for disease etc the same way any other agricultural product is it isn’t really hurting anyone. To each his/her own I say! I did just get a pretty amusing picture of what their dairy farm would look like.

With everything that is happening in this world…who cares?

John
Agreed, but I just thought it was light hearted and funny. Trade rumors involving my favorite hockey team are also not important in the grand scheme of things, but I still read about them! We need little amusements and distractions in life. We also need ice cream 😃

I wonder what the nutritional value of breastmilk is compared to daily vitamins…? I’m willing to bet that breastmilk is of greater value than any supplement on the market.

But if I had to choose between the mixed breastmilk of multiple women and pre-packaged baby formula, I’d choose the formula for sure…!

When my daughter was nursing her first baby, we started calling her the Dairy Queen, and the bedroom, the Dairy Barn. This puts a whole new spin on things!

Now, a thousand years ago, when I was a nursing mom and was over-producing, my husband thought he’d have a little experiment. He took a little bowl of my milk, and put it down for the cat. The cat took one sniff, squinted her eyes, backing away as fast as she could!

On that recommendation, I’d suggest a strong flavor for the ice cream–say, ginger or peppermint!😛

I did see this on wikipedia:

Human milk contains 0.8% to 0.9% protein, 4.5% fat, 7.1% carbohydrates and 0.2% ash (minerals). Carbohydrates are mainly lactose; several lactose-based oligosaccharides have been identified as minor components. The fat fraction contains specific triglycerides of palmitic and oleic acid (O-P-O triglycerides) and also quite a large quantity of lipids with trans bonds (see: trans fat) that are considered to have a health benefit. They are vaccenic acid, and Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) accounting for up to 6% of the human milk fat.

The principal proteins are casein (homologous to bovine beta-casein), alpha-lactalbumin, lactoferrin, IgA, lysozyme and serum albumin. In an acidic environment such as the stomach, alpha-lactalbumin unfolds into a different form and binds oleic acid to form a complex called HAMLET that kills tumor cells. This is thought to contribute to the protection of breastfed babies against cancer.

Non-protein nitrogen-containing compounds, making up 25% of the milk’s nitrogen, include urea, uric acid, creatine, creatinine, amino acids and nucleotides. Breast milk has circadian variations; some of the nucleotides are more commonly produced during the night, others during the day.

Mother’s milk has been shown to supply a type of endocannabinoid (the natural neurotransmitters which marijuana simulates), 2-Arachidonoyl glycerol.

Though it now is almost universally prescribed, in some countries in the 1950s the practice of breastfeeding went through a period where it was out of vogue and the use of infant formula was considered superior to breast milk. However, it is now universally recognized that there is no commercial formula that can equal breast milk. In addition to the appropriate amounts of carbohydrate, protein and fat, breast milk also provides vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes and hormones - all of the things that a growing infant will require. Breast milk also contains antibodies and lymphocytes from the mother that help the baby resist infections. The immune function of breastmilk is individualized, as the mother, through her touching and taking care of the baby, comes into contact with pathogens that colonize the baby and consequently her body makes the appropriate antibodies and immune cells.

I’m in the dark about how breastmilk actually tastes (the article claims that human milk is more thinner and sweeter than cow’s milk) - I obviously don’t remember clearly whether I received it or not and how it tasted the last time - but I doubt I’d be going around drinking it now.

lol this is disgusting! An ice-cream stand in Southend makes crisp (potato chip) ice cream. I plan to go there when it gets warmer 😃

thats kinda gross…its one thing drinking your own mothers breastmilk as a child…its a completely different thing to consume a strangers…i wouldnt be able to keep the icecream down:D id think of where it came from then puke:D
It’s not really something that’s familiar to our culture, adults drinking or eating breastmilk, but looking at it objectively - when we drink cow’s milk isn’t the cow a stranger to us? Cow’s milk is really for calves, not humans; it’s just our familiarity with drinking it that makes it seem acceptable.

I would think the ice cream would be super sweet, probably too sweet for my tastes, if my milk is anything to judge by.
Also the process of making and freezing the ice cream would probably destroy some of its nutritious value.
