If a medium could tell us everything we needed to know about the afterlife we would have no need for faith. If we have all the answers, where does God fit in? Those who have passed on and are being purified or are in heaven do not spend their time thinking about the things of earth. Their number one concern is giving Glory to God. They would not be giving glory to God by answering people’s questions and telling them the future. That would be taking glory away from God. God does not want anyone doing his job for Him.

As a former psychic and medium, who has been radically reverted (Praise God) I now know and understand where all of the information I was passing on was coming from. I truly believed I was helping people, but then I came to understand all help is in and through the Trinity. Although I did not willingly co-operate with the devil, through my gross ingnorance, I actually did. Since I was graced with the information I needed, I have renounced all of that and destroyed all information and paraphernalia I once used to give “spiritual guidance”. Spiritual it was, but going in the completely wrong direction.

To this day, I do have uncannily accurate insight into the situations of people who come to me for advice or even just empathy. Since then I do not rely on anything but my faith and my desire to help others, but the help I need to give is in helping other people to trust God and give up all control to Him. Whether she asks for the “abilities” she has, she should not EVER charge money to anyone, or make money off of a television show that intrigues people to this occult practice. It is occult in the exact sense, that we and even she, does not know who is providing the insight and information. That right there, shows that if she truly believes it is a good “power” provided by good spirits, you would not be doing that to profit. This stuff really is nothing to take lightly. I am speaking from personal experience.

I read in an interview that she considers herself a practicing catholic and regularly receives communion. This horrifies me because she willingly practices and popularizes this occult practice. She is in a state of mortal sin. She has said that her parish priest knows of her practices and does not question it. All I can say is, He who eats or drinks unworthily, heaps judgement upon themselves. In this case it would be her soul and the soul of her priest if he knowingly gives her communion. There is just no way around this, this is not an innocent talent that she uses to help people. The source, although ultimately undetermined, is most likely evil. The fact that she makes a living off of it and causes other people to seek these kinds of services (through interest, intrigue etc.) is dangerous to so many souls.

If you are a medium, you know that no medium has all the answers about the afterlife. Or very many at all.

I’m interested in why you believe this. I don’t think they are very concerned with earthly issues, either, but I do think they are very connected by love and the Holy Spirit to us.

See, what I’m thinking is, being she is on TV and all, her priest probably knows all about this. So, I’d say we get to leave that between she and her confessor. Another medium who is on TV is John Edward. He had priests amongst his clientele. Including a priest who is a medium, himself. I don’t think people on internet forums are able to judge the state of sin of another.

You, of course, came to a conclusion about yourself, and I respect that. But I don’t agree that generally, psychism has anything at all to do with the occult. I had a conversation about this last m night with someone who said, “If a lot of people can just do this, where does God fit in?”

My reply is the same place He fits into photosynthesis. This His Creation, it works as He pleases. This isn’t magic, it’s science.

It is what it is, and I am not condemning anyone (she or her priest) just voicing my concern for the good of their soul.

I am faithful to the Magisterium and the Bible and Catechism of the Catholic Church are my guide.

I’m sure this has been pointed out already, but this is what I am basing my opinions on.

2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future.48 Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

If she does not ask for her abilities, that is one thing, but for her to cater to anyone who is seeking her services is wrong. It is plainly stated above.

What do you think of her charging people for her service or making money off of the tv show? Likewise, what do you think of her approaching people who otherwise would not have sought this kind of service? I do believe it is occult because we cannot be sure who is providing the information.

2 Corinthians 11:14 “Even Satan can disguise himself to look like an angel of light”.

Actually, it doesn’t. It says consulting them “conceals a desire for power … etc.” Mostly, consulting a medium is about dealing with grief. It doesn’t say anything about doing it…

St Paul tells us that the discernment of spirits is a gift of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus Christ told us that confusing the work of the Holy Spirit with evil is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

As far as the whole “angel of light” quote that people always bring up in these discussions, Paul was talking about * e For I think that I am not in any way inferior to these “superapostles.” <— not discerning spirits.

You said you were a medium. As am I. I never saw an angel of light in my life. You said you don’t practice, I don’t, either. But I think I am wrong, I think it’s wrong to deny a gift. Because those gifts are given to benefit all.
What do you think of her charging people for her service or making money off of the tv show?
The professional mediums of my personal acquaintance are all people who serve a grief-stricken clientele. They aren’t getting rich, but they can serve more folks and help more people if they are not working for free part-time. The fruits I have seen are not only comfort and hope, but an increase in faith, conversion of atheists, reversion to the fallen away and, in almost every single case, it’s to the Catholic church. Mediums are almost overwhelmingly Catholic. Except one famous Jewish woman who prays a Rosary daily. If people want to serve as a vocation, they have to live and support families.
Likewise, what do you think of her approaching people who otherwise would not have sought this kind of service?
I have already expressed my extreme distaste at this “ambush mediumship.” This is something the producers came up with, I am sure.
I do believe it is occult because we cannot be sure who is providing the information.
This is not logical. If you don’t know, you don’t know. So why would you believe anything? People who believe they, themselves, or some object, or some* magic words* have power to connect them to those passed, they are the folks dabbling with evil. If you did this, you know it isn’t like that. It comes to you, you don’t go get it. You can assist by paying attention and coming to quiet, but you can’t conjure an ant at a 4th of July picnic by yourself. If you did this, you know the experience makes you feel totally humbled and also that it has little to do with you. It is a work of the Spirit, about the person being served, the medium is just that: the instrument in God’s hands through which the information is delivered.

Your psychism is a natural thing, a trait many share, which science is studying and explaining. It’s not more of God than the ability to sing, and while all things are of God, it’s not a special gift. It runs in families.

Mediumship seems to be particular to only some, and a gift of the Holy Spirit. I keep listing the Saints who were mediums, I’m sure you know who they are. Now, if we all repress a gift of God, how are we not burying our talents? What is more important to know than that we live forever. If you convince an atheist that life is eternal, he converts.

I am no fan of this show or this woman. But that doesn’t mean she is not God’s instrument. We’d have to know the fruits. I don’t. But God uses who He wills, and I don’t have the right to question Him. He’s picked some pretty big sinners to become His Saints and do His work. Like Saint Paul. Who heard the voice of a dead man (he thought dead) on the road to Damascus. Now where would we all be if he had obeyed his church and denied the experience because it might have been the devil disguised as … someone making him blind?

Why is it easier for us to believe that mediums hear the voice of the devil. Then to believe that maybe it’s God that enables them to maybe help people?
It seems that people are always quicker to assume that these people are bad , that they have ulterior motives, etc. , instead of good people that GOD has gifted?

anything is possible. I can not say that in the end God does not allow this. The Church does not permit it, and I agree with its guidelines and reasoning. In the end all will be revealed. I for one am putting my eggs in the basket of the church. God is all knowing and anything is possible for Him.

I had the experience of “helping” someone connect with a deceased relative. All that did for them was to remind them that our souls do live on which at the time seemed helpful to them. Shortly after I did that I quit all divination and mediumship. I have been working on this same “client” for two and half years, I have renounced those abilities and have been evangelizing and catechizing (someone who had no concept or understanding of religion or God) and she begins RCIA this Wednesday. Further to that she has brought others who had given up the faith BACK to church. In my catechizing and evangelizing I have given her much greater understanding and therefore comfort, hope and faith than being a medium for her. The fruits of her conversion and her reverting others come from evangelizing and catechizing, not connecting her to the dead.

Certainly a medium who tries to lead a client or someone seeking answers towards God appears to be a good thing, but consider this: Mediums who do this are advertising for God and using a “power” to convert those who are vulnerable and suggestable. I don’t believe God needs us to perform tricks like mediumship or divination to get people interested in Him. To do that and believe you are doing God’s work is to cheapen and distort his love for all of his people. Right from the beginning God gave us free will, whether to love him and serve him. Throwing a pitch into your mediumship is wrong. I used to think i was leading people to God, but I have greater respect for God now, and realize I never understood a darn thing back then even though i fooled others and even myself.

I may not be able to convince everyone reading this, but I know some will understand my point of view. The devil, used his free will to go against God. God did not strip him of his original angelic knowledge and abilities before he was thrown into Hell. He uses those abilities now to trick us into thinking we are on the right track, when in fact we could be (and this case are) committing serious sins. The devil is cleverer than any human being and his end goal is the same for each and every one of us…Hell. Hell is a choice…it is something we willfully choose for ourselves. Sure there is an element of ignorance involved, but once someone has explained it to you, you cannot rely on that defense when your day comes. I think its always best to play it safe. Your eternal salvation is not something to take a chance with by acting as a medium even if you have that ability and certainly not by encouraging others, even if you think you are leading them to God. To me there is a certain pride in even thinking God would use me specially, when each and every one of us is called to plainly evangelize. Those who just use the Word, have no tricks up their sleeve and see great results.

sorry if i am all over the place with my points…I am just speaking from my conscience and formation. In the end God’s will be done in all things, all people and all situations.

I disagree. How did it start? Why would she listen to you? When she knew that life was eternal, not “believed” but knew because of that connection, it opened a door for her to step through and you could assist her through. Not to at all say your inspired work later on wasn’t important, but you actually cannot say just how her conversion came about, because it’s quite a mysterious process.
Mediums who do this are advertising for God and using a “power” to convert those who are vulnerable and suggestable.
A.) Mediums have no powers whatsoever. B.) I never heard of a medium doing this. Good mediums listen and report. Just like good telephones pick up sound and transmit it. It’s the Holy Spirit that uses things to bring about the conversion of souls.
I don’t believe God needs us to perform tricks like mediumship or divination to get people interested in Him.
Feeding the 5000. Healing the man’s hand in the synagogue. Walking on water. Thomas putting his hand into Jesus’ side. No one here is qualified to even form an opinion on what God will or will not do to save as soul. As to “performing tricks” I find that a rather insulting characterization of things common to great Saints as well as lowly and humble devout Christians over time. I’ve never “preformed a trick” in my life.
To do that and believe you are doing God’s work is to cheapen and distort his love for all of his people.
Again, instead of simply saying you, yourself, became uncomfortable, you insist on reading the intentions of others and them insulting them. BTW, our job is to do God’s work here. What that work is for each of us, He chooses: not us.
Throwing a pitch into your mediumship is wrong. I used to think i was leading people to God, but I have greater respect for God now, and realize I never understood a darn thing back then even though i fooled others and even myself.
I have to tell you, I don’t have a clue what “throwing a pitch into your mediumship” means. Are you talking about the Long Island woman? You seem to feel you, yourself, were prideful and wrong. I couldn’t say. As of now, you seem to think you have the answers for everyone else and know what God thinks and doesn’t and does do and doesn’t do. Does that seem reasonable to you?
I may not be able to convince everyone reading this, but I know some will understand my point of view. The devil, used his free will to go against God
There is no indication whatsoever that the devil has anything to do with the process of mediumship in general. There is a rather a lot of evidence from Scripture to the lives of the Saints, that this process is one that is fairly common to devout people and meant to benefit all.
sorry if i am all over the place with my points…I am just speaking from my conscience and formation. In the end God’s will be done in all things, all people and all situations.
I think we all need to speak from our own conscience and formation. I think we must absolutely make choices we believe are most in harmony with God’s Will. But I also think we have to be careful not to presume we actually know for a fact, most of the time, what that Will is. On the following I wholeheartedly join you:

In the end God’s will be done in all things, all people and all situations

amen to that

He’s called a Medium because that kind of nonsense is neither Rare nor Well-Done.

Thanks for the laugh, I just had just taken a big swig of coffee as I was reading your comment and have to clean my monitor and keyboard. But it was worth it, I’ll be chuckling over this one all day.

I admit to watching many of the episodes of Long Island Medium… I watch it because I know many people that will be into it and I like to be able to pick apart her techniques.

Teresa Caputo may call herself a Catholic but she likes to incorporate pagan techniques into her mediumship…case in point… the drumming circle group she often has in her home. She also does cleansings with sage where she uses a feather to clear her space of negative spirits before she starts.

I personally find her claims of being a genuine medium to be a sham and it is pretty easy to spot how she does the classic “cold reading” that is often indicative of charlatans. Another good point is how she makes a joke of her reading sessions by faking a reading on the commercial she landed for Priceline Negotiator playing herself giving a reading to two paid actors. If she was serious about her mediumship she would not take her alleged gifts of mediumship so lightly.

I don’t care how well intentioned a medium’s intentions are, it is strictly forbidden in the Catholic faith to contact the dead. We see a perfect example of this when Saul has the medium, the witch of Endor, contact the spirit of the dead prophet Samuel.

I am sure others will chime in with the fact that Caputo says the spirits are the ones coming after her when in fact she instigates things by having the readings done in her own home for the most part. She is inviting these spirits to come to her readings. Period.

And all mediums who do readings are inviting spirits to attach themselves to the medium and their clients. I would not want to be the medium who on the day judgement has to answer God as to why I was constantly contacting the dead.

For those who are pro-mediums and say that spirits are contacting them and that its not the other way around. Do you really think that you have the gift of discernment greater than that of the Catholic Church with its 2,000 plus history of dealing with the spiritual realm? The pride involved in such thinking is scary.

I will pray for all mediums…no matter how well intentioned they may be, that actively do readings inviting spirits to attach themselves to them. Why would a spirit bother to appear to Jane Doe who is a non-believer when they got a Caputo giving them good business?

You’re in my prayers.

God bless

TempleoftheSoul - thank you for your wise words. I have been invited to a luncheon where a medium is to give readings. At first after watching Teresa Caputo, her being catholic, I accepted the invitation - well it cost $35.00 per person. I have been praying about it and just today called to cancel and I am so glad I did. Teresa Caputo is doing a great disservice to catholics letting them think it is okay to be catholic and see a medium.

It’s a blog post and it’s full of inaccuracies.
You have given some fascinating, well-thought-out answers, I must say. i always enjoy your posts.

What WOULD be those inaccuracies, though, pray tell? Such as…?

Just asking. 👍👍

I give thanks to the Lord that you cancelled. Just the fact that the event was charging money is a big red flag. If your gift is God given then why the need to charge? 🤷

God bless

Because if you want to serve all the people who need comfort, you also have to pay your rent and buy food?

III. “You Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me”
2110 The first commandment forbids honoring gods other than the one Lord who has revealed himself to his people. It proscribes superstition and irreligion. Superstition in some sense represents a perverse excess of religion; irreligion is the vice contrary by defect to the virtue of religion.
2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected:
The Catechism states all are to be rejected. It then list what divinations are:
recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future.
Seeking the devil or demons or other practices which are then enumerated.
48 Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums
The Catechism is stating that these are divinations to be rejected. Rejected to refuse to hear, receive, or admit.
all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.
The Catechism advances the thought that people consult these things for power and they contradict what we owe to God alone.

The Catechism advances the thought that people consult these things for power …

People usually talk to a medium because of pain and grief.
The Catechism speculates as to the reason but it does not say that it is o.k. if you have a different reason. The Catechism states that these are divinations to be rejected. Not that it is o.k. if you just want to talk because of pain or grief, that is what a psychatrist is for and for that matter your parish priest.
No one is getting any messages unless God allows it
God allows evil. With this statement it seems that you believe they are from God because He allows it? But the Church tells you they are not from God and they should be rejected.

Because if you want to serve all the people who need comfort, you also have to pay your rent and buy food?
I’m sorry but I find that reasoning to be a lame excuse… sorry to be blunt, that’s how it comes across. All of the saints in the history of the church had spiritual gifts but you never saw one, NOT ONE, who charged anyone for their gift to read hearts in the confessional, pray for the miraculous healing of others and so on.

It borders on the tacky to charge for gifts freely given to one by God that should be freely shared with others at no charge.

God bless
