I really just want to vent. Here I am, working on myself as a person and have returned to my faith and am trying to surround myself with positive people…then today I get rediculed by a friend who I don’t talk much to anymore.

To give you the cliff notes version:
Had a set of four friends (two couples) that my ex and I hung out with 3-4 times a week. My ex and I began to have problems. Told said friends to thei faces that we won’t be coming out as much because we were trying to work on our relationship and find time for the two of us together, as well as time for ourselves.
A couple of the said friends apparently got upset because “I quit coming out all the time.” However, this was not brought to my attention (or to my face, for that matter) and instead decided to give me the cold shoulder. That being said, one of the other friends follow suite and also gave me the cold shoulder.

Needless to say I was very hurt by this. They were supposed to be my friends and I expected their support.
Then I began to realize that drama not only follows them, but they create it…especially by talking behind everybody’s backs. I found that I couldn’t trust not one person in the group. If I told one person something in confidence, no doubt the other three soon found out.

So I no longer go out of my way to contact them. If they contact me, I’ll respond a marjority of the time…but since I no longer trust them, I do not make a point to give them any information about me or what I’m doing in my life.

Since falling into a short spurt of depression after the break up, having breakdown, and loss of my dog, I’ve returned to my faith, made a few new friends, repaired an old much missed friendship, and have regained contact with other old friends.

Then, I received a text message from one of the said friends. (yes, that’s right…I said a TEXT MESSAGE. Not a phone call or a visit, but a TEXT MESSAGE!)
She proceeded to ask what she did to make me hate her.
Hate is such a strong word and I definitely don’t hate her. So I told her that I didn’t know what she was talking about.
She responded that I never respond to any of her texts when she invites me to do things and that rumor has it that I don’t trust her or any of the others in the “group” anymore and she was just wondering what she did to make me hate her.

I told her that I never said that I hated her and I wasn’t sure where she got that idea. She then said that I definitely ignore her.
And when I didn’t respond to that right away (because I was on a phone call then) she texted me saying “see you’re doing it right now. I never thought we stopped being friends but i guess you made that decision without me.”

Well of course, that upset me because she was one of the ones that gave me the cold shoulder and didn’t return my calls at the beginning.

She then pushed the issue by texting me again saying that when I was ready to tell her what she did to make me not want to talk to her or be friends anymore, let her know.
And remember…this is all being done by TEXT MESSAGING!
She then continues to push the issue texting me again saying that she and her husband text me all the time to invite me to things and I just ignore them.

So, trying to be civil, I responded telling her that I haven’t ignored every single text and right now I’m focusing on myself and things I’m doing in my life.

Apparently she didn’t like that answer because she then responded saying “I’m sorry. I didn’t know you could go downtown to clubs and party but couldn’t respond to my text inviting you to danny’s birthday party. I shouldn’t be so selfish. You could keep working on you.”

I have to admit, that really hurt. I was downtown supporting a friend that was dj’ing at a club I used to frequent. He just moved back to town and I had not seen him for a couple of years. This is a friend that I’ve known way before the “group,” give or take at least 7-8 years. He asked me to come to support him and I did.
And on top of that, I felt like she was trying to pick a fight with me. I hate to say, but it made me feel pretty ******…

But I didn’t even dignify that text with a response. I didn’t want to stoop to that level. I should have to explain myself to her. Friends don’t go around making friends feel guilty. Friends should actually be there for each other when they need (which they weren’t…when I needed them the most, they turned their backs on me.)

Just when I feel like I’m doing great…becoming a more faithful, positive person…surrounding myself with positive people…and this happens.
Did I do the right thing by not responding and delving further into whatever drama she was trying to cause??
I never once said that I hated any of them…and even though I no longer trust them, each one of them are still included in my daily prayers.

Hi Maria 👋

Under the circumstances, looks like you did the best you can in responding to her despite her lack of tact. New technology has a way of creating bad situations into worse ones. When it comes to issues of friendship, it would’ve been best if she talked you to face to face instead of relying on a text message to work out your problems. To me, that’s a sure sign that she does not value your friendship anymore.

There’s nothing to feel guilty about. You made a conscientious decision to work on yourself and focus on your faith more. You really don’t need the drama these peripheral associates create. Continue praying for them. You have made positive steps…this isn’t even a roadblock to your progression in faith.

God Bless.

:thankyou:

Thank you for taking the time to read and respond Tonks 🙂
You’re response is reassuring to me. Sometimes I feel like I expect too much from a friendship, but it is a two-way street and while I tried to be good friends earlier on this relationship, when the actions were not being reciprocated, I just gave up. Why should I be the one to make all the effort and then when I really needed that friendship and trust, it was not there? Whatever I said in confidence was just being repeated to the rest of the group!

I totally agree with you on the text messaging and the face to face…and they know that I have a problem with it. A couple of months ago I called them out to their faces when I saw them about giving me the cold shoulder and totalling ignoring me to my face. I told them that if someone has an issue with me then they should talk to me to my face about it, not behind my back to everyone else. It’s the same deal here.

I need positive friends in my life that will be supportive, not people that are going to judge me and throw guilt trips at me whenever I don’t do what they want me to do.

Thanks again for your reassurance that I’ve done the adult thing by not continuing to be sucked into whatever argument or drama she was trying to create. I’m sure that she was sitting around with the rest of them and they were discussing my responses. My type of personality always likes to have the last word and be right all the time, so it took all my self control not to respond.

God Bless you.

Maria, friendship is a gift, not a right. If you need to move on to grow, that’s something you have the right to do. Obviously your old friends don’t agree and choose unhealthy ways to manipulate you back into their circle.

You have no control over others’ choices and attitudes, but others can be hurtful. They feel rejected, which is natural. If they continue to resent you for abandoning them, they still have the power to hurt you if you allow, which is also natural. They don’t genuinely love you if they 'cold-shoulder" you, but it is because their feelings, and even perhaps their pride, is hurt.

Hopefully you can extract yourself respectfully as you are trying to do. I pray that you can handle things for the best, and that they let you go more gracefully than so far. It’s not a comfortable thing to move on. It can become oppressive and absorb too much of your energy. It’s abrasive to have others’ thinking ill of you and heckling you. I ask the Lord to get you through this and to guide you as He wishes in this, and in your choice of friends.

Wishing you happiness and peace. May the Lord lead you to those in whose company He desires you.

God bless you,
Trishie. A hug.

If these people are over the age of 12 then they are not people I would cultivate friendship with. They are stuck in junior high.

Move on and find some people of integrity and character to associate with.

We all have 24 hours in a day. How you choose to allocate that time is up to you. Seems like a waste of time to allocate any of it to grown men and women who act like they are still in the 7th grade.

Well put Trishie, thank you…
A friend of mine told me the same thing…let them think what they want because they’re going to feel and think the way they want regardless of what I say.
I felt rejected and resented their abandonment long before they began to feel the same…however, the difference with me is that I’ve moved on and stopped putting energy into feeling resentment towards them…now the tables are turned and they’re lashing out at me for feeling the way I orginally felt.
However much hurt I was by it, I continue to pray for them daily.

I don’t feel so ****** about it today. I went to church this morning and came out grinning. The deacon even mentioned my grin and smiled and wished me a wonderful week! It was a wonderful service and it is a beautiful day and I’m not going to let anything bring me down today!
Praise Jesus and Praise the Lord for a beautiful day! :dancing:

My thoughts exactly…

I try to make “nice” with people and not burn bridges so this is how I probably would’ve responded. (via text)

Sorry - I know I’ve been out of it lately. Had alot going on - sorry if it seems like I haven’t been a good friend. I just need some space to figure some stuff out KWIM? Hope we can still be friends even if we don’t see each other as much. I definatly DON’T hate you!!! Take Care.

And that’s that. No hard feelings - no fighting. And still she get a sense that you’re not available. Not saying my way is right - it’s just what I think I’d do.

Hi yellowbird…thanks for taking the time to read and for your response!

Actually, I’ve already done that…about a month ago. And not exactly word for word what you said, but pretty much the same exact thing.
And even with trying to “make nice” before without allowing them to get all in my business anymore, this is what it’s come to. 🤷

Then I’d walk away. It’s impossible to “make nice” with some people. 🤷

True…you can’t make everyone happy. As long as I’m happy with God in my life, then that’s all that matters! 🙂

Thank you for your thoughts!

I am a little shocked that you see these friends so often. How is that possible? Are they neighbors? I mean that’s too close for comfort, like having your in-laws next door or something. After 30, I just see my friends once a month or on ichat, if that. Special occasions and/or parties, how are you supposed to work, worship, or have family time? I think they are wrong to expect you to be around so much, this and the texting behavior is very juvenile and you are better off without it, especially if the very essence of you is at the point where you abhor having to see them, and your husband should be supporting in this.

I feel for you, I wouldn’t want to sacrifice my alone time to be with people in the old same ole, same ole setting, after a while it gets repetitive and you know what to expect, why do that so often?

Texting is a REALLY bad way to manage any kind of relationship.
I know some people can text as fast as I can type, but still – you don’t get any nuances.
Personally I would keep texting for short factual messages - “See you at 3 at Dave’s.” and conduct friendships by phone or in person.
Or we’ll all turn into a society of 7tfdh graders.

OLHope…you said exactly what I was feeling!! I’m 30 and I was wanting to prioritize my time…
However, they are a little younger than me…around 24-26 years of age. And for me, it really got to be too much. Frankly, I got tired of doing the same thing every single week. It was Tuesdays - game nights at one couple’s house, Thursdays - bike nights (motorcycle and we met up with other people then to go riding), and Sundays - cookout at the other couple’s house…and then they were wanting to do things on Saturday too.

So yeah, like you pointed out…I was wanting time for me, myself, and I along with time to spend with my boyfriend at the time. And he was supportive of it a bit…he made a concious effort to make time to “us” only. But that relationship is in itself another story.

Thank you for taking the time to read and for your thoughts! 🙂

No problem! Yes at this point in my life, my me time is everything and all I allow for interruption is work, attention to the pets(nephew cat and nephew dog, visitors, …lol), moms appointments and health, and family emergencies. I just came back from her heart test with her and now need to run more errands so I must bid you adieu and keep us updated with everything!

-Hope
