Please suggest books that are concise and reader friendly on the above topics. I have tried to read “How the Reformation Happened” by Belloc, but the language is too dense and unclear. Thanks all!

The Catholic Church through the Ages A history, by John Vidmar, OP (Paulist Press)

Easy read, straight to the point supported by facts without bias opinions.

The Story of Christianity Volume I, The Early Church To The Dawn of the Reformation, get the revised and updated edition by Justo L. Gonzalez a South American Professor.

Medium read, reveals the facts of history that is easy to comprehend, but be careful when he makes bias opinons which are anti- Catholic

A couple of years ago for my AP European History class my history teacher made us read a book called A World Lit Only By Fire by William Manchester as summer reading.

The book is two-thirds history of the Protestant Reformation and one-third the voyage of Magellan. I found it to be a quick and fun read (except the third about Magellan). I learned more than I could ever want to know about the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Church at the time (this is the book where I first heard of Pope Alexander VI). It covers Luther, Calvin, Henry VIII and the English Reformation, and a lot more.

It might have a bit on the inquisition, but I’m not sure.

Even though it was a reading assignment for an AP class, it was a pretty easy read, and a quick one too. Now you have me thinking of re-reading it!
