A couple of years ago for my AP European History class my history teacher made us read a book called A World Lit Only By Fire by William Manchester as summer reading.
The book is two-thirds history of the Protestant Reformation and one-third the voyage of Magellan. I found it to be a quick and fun read (except the third about Magellan). I learned more than I could ever want to know about the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Church at the time (this is the book where I first heard of Pope Alexander VI). It covers Luther, Calvin, Henry VIII and the English Reformation, and a lot more.
It might have a bit on the inquisition, but I’m not sure.
Even though it was a reading assignment for an AP class, it was a pretty easy read, and a quick one too. Now you have me thinking of re-reading it!
