I dated a young woman for a year, and felt very definitely called to marry her. She said she felt the same way, but then in March told me that God was calling her to be single for a while, so she could grow by herself before getting married. I couldn’t exactly put up an argument; after all, how to you argue with that (“sorry, honey, I think God might be mistaken…”
), so we parted ways on Holy Saturday.
Well, in prayers in the chapel before the Blessed Sacrament, I poured out my soul and broken heart before the Lord. He comforted me, and I found that in Christ’s Presence was the only place where I was not heartbroken…sad, but not heartbroken. So I spent hours on end in there, journaling, reading the Bible, and praying to God and Mary to no end.
Here is my concern: I feel that I am still being called to marry this young lady. On the one hand, it may just be my own attraction to her and love for her that is keeping me attached; but on the other hand, the feeling of love for her only gets stronger when I am in the Lord’s Presence. I have looked at the priesthood, deaconate, religious life, and always come back around to this woman that I feel very called to. She, however, does not return my feelings anymore. She cares about me deeply, but won’t consider the possibility of getting back with me in the future. I feel that God is testing my trust in Him by putting the call to marry her in my heart but allowing her to leave me behind, and in a lot of ways I feel like I am failing the test by losing heart and losing hope in Him.
I ask for your prayers and encouragement, as well as any wisdom or advice you have to offer me whether about the girl or about trusting God.
