I dated a young woman for a year, and felt very definitely called to marry her. She said she felt the same way, but then in March told me that God was calling her to be single for a while, so she could grow by herself before getting married. I couldn’t exactly put up an argument; after all, how to you argue with that (“sorry, honey, I think God might be mistaken…” ), so we parted ways on Holy Saturday.
Well, in prayers in the chapel before the Blessed Sacrament, I poured out my soul and broken heart before the Lord. He comforted me, and I found that in Christ’s Presence was the only place where I was not heartbroken…sad, but not heartbroken. So I spent hours on end in there, journaling, reading the Bible, and praying to God and Mary to no end.
Here is my concern: I feel that I am still being called to marry this young lady. On the one hand, it may just be my own attraction to her and love for her that is keeping me attached; but on the other hand, the feeling of love for her only gets stronger when I am in the Lord’s Presence. I have looked at the priesthood, deaconate, religious life, and always come back around to this woman that I feel very called to. She, however, does not return my feelings anymore. She cares about me deeply, but won’t consider the possibility of getting back with me in the future. I feel that God is testing my trust in Him by putting the call to marry her in my heart but allowing her to leave me behind, and in a lot of ways I feel like I am failing the test by losing heart and losing hope in Him.

I ask for your prayers and encouragement, as well as any wisdom or advice you have to offer me whether about the girl or about trusting God.

Truly,

Dear Friend, yes, it is very difficult to know what comes from God, and what comes from our attractions.
Thank you for bringing your heartache and difficulty to the prayer Intentions forum where we can pray for you. It might help you to also post your dilemma in the family life section of the Catholic Living forum so that others can give you the advice you hope for. I hope you will find it helpful.

Dear Father, in Jesus’ name please help this good man to find the answers to his vocation and to find whom You wish as marriage partner. Please help him to discern which is his natural sorrow and affection, and which is the direction You desire for him. Help him to know whether someone who does not wish to be his partner would therefore make his a happy marriage or not. Help him to accept the signs that are there.

Father, please also let him realise that his regret and sorrow isn’t a failing, but a grief. Human grief has many stages, and please let him know if he is perhaps in denial, a real and difficult period of the grieving process. Do not allow him to lose hope in You as this girl has the gift of free will and her choices are those she herself has made. Couching the choice in God’s name may be truth or may be convenience…but whatever, our Father, please in Jesus’ name, give this man peace and release him from sorrow into life, trust, and new hope. We entrust him to You, and pray that he humbly trusts himself into Your hands so that You may heal, and if You wish, release him from this sad state, into a happy future.

I’ll keep you in my prayers and Masses. God bless you for all your prayer in His presence…Trishie
