Looking for small daily mass book to bring to Mass

For some reason, the parish I belong to, does not have the mass readings available within the misselettes. (that bugs me!) (they just have a snippit of the reading) I would like to follow along, and my kids like to follow along, as well. Sometimes, it is hard to hear the lector, for a variety of reasons, and this would be especially helpful for my family and me.

I see people carrying small daily mass reading books at mass…can you recommend any? I checked amazon and EWTN calatog, and can’t find anything.

Your help is appreciated. 🙂 Thanks!

Yes, it is a monthly missal magazine with all the daily Mass readings for the current month, plus other things. On the left side you should see a menu for requesting a sample copy or subscribing.

Oh ok. But, not a small book that I can carry in my purse to mass?

The Magnificat is my favorite as well since it’s done by the month and thus small.

You can get Sunday Mass readings here and daily Mass readings here. I haven’t seen one that puts all readings in one book and it definitely wouldn’t be small!

I’ve used a daily Mass missal and the Magnificat and I really like the Magnificat better. It’s, of course, up to you though. They also have a kids version of the Magnificat that the kiddos in my parish seem to enjoy.

The Magnificat is a small book - about 5" X 4" and about a 1/2 inch thick. But you get a new one for each month. It includes all the reading for Mass (daily and Sunday), a shortened version of Morning and Evening prayer from the LOH and a meditation based usually on the readings of the day.

Alternately, you can get a daily missal from any online or physical Catholic bookstore if you want to get one book forever. They are bigger and heavier but still quite portable. Here is a popular one Missal

Remember though, there’s a new translation in progress, so this $90 missal will be outdated in a couple of years. When I asked this question a few months back, I was glad that someone pointed that out to me.’

That’s absolutely true - another good reason to go with the Magnificat.👍 The actual readings aren’t going to change (at least not yet) but you would be juggling the missalette and the daily missal - too distracting IMHO.

what are these little leather books I see some people following along with in mass?? they are $90?:eek:
 
Magnificat is a very nice option if you’re looking for something small and portable. You really can’t carry around the full set of readings (I,II,III and A/B cycles) and keep it small and lightweight-- hence the $90, 2000 page missals. 🙂

Another option is electronic: you could subscribe (free) to Mobile Gabriel at www.avantgo.com or download the Daily Roman Missal onto your PDA (if you have a reader like iSilo) at memoware.com/?screen=search_results&p=category%5E!Religion~!&start=25

As the Mobile Gabriel FAQs note, there’s no reason you can’t rely on an electronic form of the readings of the Mass, but you may get odd looks initially if people assume you’re playing Solitaire during Mass or something… 😃

Are they brown or a mustardy golden color? If so, they are still probably the Magnificat. They sell a leather cover that you put over your monthly edition. It has ribbons for place keepers and keeps the book in better condition by the end of the month.

I’m not sure how “little” the little leather things are, but if it’s Magnificat, some people purchase a durable cover and slip each edition into it as appropriate. The full-blown printed missal, however, yes, can run you $70-$90. It’s a substantial book, time-consuming to edit and typeset, and just doesn’t get the same kind of bulk discounts that the usually bubblegum beach novel does. 🤷 My husband’s owned his for years, though, and it’s been very worthwhile for him. It’s funny, actually-- the cover is starting to wear smooth right where his fingers and thumbs always rest when he’s holding it open. Personally, though, I stick with the electronic options mentioned above…

I use the Saint Joseph Sunday Missal from Catholic Book Publishing.Bought it at Catholic store for $3.50 .Readings for Sunday only also has hymns and popular prayers,stations of the cross.4’x6’x 5/8’

Sorry everyone–I was like $90 for Sunday readings? I meant Sunday mass readings only.

mamma–this sounds exactly like what I’m looking for. Unfortunately, I have not yet found any Catholic bookstores here in Tampa Bay area or north of Tampa, where I live.

I googled tampa catholic book and found several stores in your area or shop google has numerous online sources

Years ago I bought three books to cover the cycles - one a Sunday Missal and two for the Daily Readings as they all cycle through, Sundays being a three year cycle and Daily a two year cycle. I don’t recall paying $90.00 for them though :hmmm: Of course I purchased them some 20+ years ago. This was the Sunday one

You can get it at any Religious Goods store and it is less than $40.00 ( $32.50 at Leafletonline.com).

Or you can subscribe to Magnificat and get not just the Sunday readings but the daily readings and some inspirational reading as well. I love my Magnificat!

The Magnificat is not printed off. It’s an actual magazine with all of the readings. I’m not sure if that’s what you were referring to when you said the above though.

I also have a two volume missal for daily Mass reading. Each was about $20. I have not used a Sunday missal since we have them in the missalettes. I got tired of all of the flipping back and forth between prayers and readings and gospels and acclamations! So, I switched to the Magnificat. I’m glad I have there other two, but the Magnificat works much better for me on a daily basis.

Any who, I hope you find the right one for you! The $90 books aren’t necessary…you can find one for substantially cheaper.
