Not a whole lot worse than the fate of St Vibiana Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles. Should read up about that some time. Cardinal Mahony threw this church under the bus after the Northridge earthquake damaged it severely. It was saved by the secular LA Historical Society that fought Mahony over the fate of the building. After months of Mahony claiming vociferously that the building could not be saved, It was ultimately saved and restored in spite of Mahony’s efforts to shut that effort down. Unfortunately, Mahony ordered it sold on to people who use it for far less than holy purposes. It still stands today. But not for the Church.

That is so awful! These churches were built by the blood, sweat and tears of the faithful. How dare those bishops sell these Churches! It’s disgraceful that this is happening.

It is disgusting. It’s also what happens when the laity stop supporting the parish, either by not attending or by withholding donations needed for the upkeep of the parish. Liturgical supplies, utilities, and maintenance all cost money.

It’s unfortunate, but the chapel is now just a secular museum for all practical purposes. It was deconsecrated in 1971 and sold to a private developer when the girls academy closed. The chapel had been used by the academy and there was no need to keep it for religious purposes because the cathedral is a matter of blocks away.
