Los Angeles Getting A New Archbishop

Some of the faculty at St. John’s Seminary – where new priests for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are trained – have expressed concern that the new coadjutor bishop will lean more “conservative” than his predecessor, and some have even threatened to resign or retire if this turns out to be the case.

FYI, I know Tom Peter’s personally. He is one of those guys with absolutely amazing connections, so I am giving this some credence as more than just rumor.
 
There are other seminaries…I would say let them resign or retire and God bless (I hope the new archbishop springs for gold watches and a nice dinner).
 
Regarding the threatened resignations at St. John’s Seminary, I hope someone rushes to get written promises from all of them before they change their minds…please! Time for a long overdue clean-sweeping of that place, and restore purity to its halls.

👍 We had a rather unorthodox pastor of a large, monied parish near me make the same threat when (now) Cardinal DiNardo was noamed coadjutor for Galveston-Houston. He’s still here. Someone should have gotten his John Hancock on his “promises.” 😃
 
I actually cheered when I heard the news! My mom just woke up and asked me if I don’t like Cardinal Mahoney. I replied “I have my reasons.” Should I tell her?
 
No, you shouldn’t tell her. That’s called detraction even if you are convinced that it is deserved.

Being the archbishop of LA has got to be one of the most brutal and thankless jobs in America. Whoever gets it has my condolences and prayers.

There is a story I heard that one of the traditions after a papal election is that the elector Cardinals line up to give the pope-elect their condolences and apologies for voting him to the office. Same reason!

Whoever it is, pray for him, welcome him and give him a chance while assuming the best!

Your comments are not only unwarranted they are deeply offensive. St. John’s has been turning out some absolutely wonderful priests at least as of late.

I feel sorry for the poor chap, whoever he might be. He will be inheriting a mess. The sexual scandles are still draining money. More seriously, the scandles were bad enough, but the subsequent cover-up (as was also the case in Ireland) was even worse. :crying:

Right now, the Catholic Church in Los Angeles has very little moral authority. It may take years, even decades, to restore it. :sad_yes:

Not to mention the hot button topics of illeagel immigartion reform, health care for illeagl immigrants, Gay Marriage. Abortion, and so on. :banghead:

Truely a thankless job

You know what? With the exception of this post I think all of these posts are in bad taste. Cheering, wishing people to resign, subtle innuendos to a person’s state of grace because of past behaviors: all of these things are uncharitable and put our Church in a negative public light. Praying for healing, unification, and faithfulness is all we should be doing. Period. Let the secular media be the vultures, not us. :mad:

That really not the case. Some far removed from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles struggle to understand why Cardinal Mahony has survived and in many ways prospered as the Archbishop of Los Angeles. By far the biggest reason is the concrete support he receives from the giant majority in that huge archdiocese – the faithful whose primary language is Spanish.

People who know nothing about the man (except for re-posted photos of dancing nuns and his tiff with Mother Angelica) should take the time to read his (auto)biography when it comes out one day. He’s truly an amazing human in many positive ways.
 
I personally don’t think that it would take decades to bring moral authority back to the archdiocese. Many of the Catholics here are pretty devout, but they have been taught wrong on many things. I do believe that many of them will learn the true evils of certain things when taught that. So many Catholics I meet don’t know certain things are against Church teaching, and I have been chastised for saying things are Church teaching that they weren’t taught.
