I converted to Catholicism 2 yrs ago. I knew my family would need some time to adjust to the idea. My grandmother and aunts have been great at treating me the same. My mother has been giving me the silent treatment or standard replies (near-silence) since I told her we were in RCIA classes.
I’ve shared what I could in hopes of helping her feel more comfortable. I gave her a Scott Hahn testimony CD which she probably never listened to. Told her that I don’t need her to agree with me. I don’t have any desire to convince her to convert. I just want to be treated like a daughter and not a Catholic.
This week I point blank asked her if we could have a relationship if I never go back to being Protestant and I don’t agree with her on points of theology. She avoided the question. I asked several more times as she chose to instead blame and belittle me. So basically, no we can’t have a relationship if I remain Catholic.
I’m kinda raw now. Part of me is relieved that I don’t have to continue to make efforts with someone who has been incredibly emotionally abusive to me. Part of me is incredibly hurt that my own mother doesn’t love me for me and only for if I do what she expects of me.
Any recommendations for how to proceed from here? Not sure if I should consider therapy or prayer or both? Is there a saint helpful in these kind of situations? Just trying to figure out how to move forward.
