What is there to exonerate? The statement wasn’t meant to be antichristian. John Lennon didn’t have the foresight to see what would eventually happen to the Beatles and at the time of his statement it was a common human mistake to believe that they would always be as popular as they were, which at that time was more popular than Jesus. There was no harm intended. Without the rose colored glasses of time’s knowledge, he made a simple factual statement.

The Vatican does not “forgive” Lennon for anything because there isn’t anything to forgive. All this is is a piece about the Vatican view toward what Lennon said 40 years ago. Of course, the MSM can’t really seem to report anything accurately. If you read the article there isn’t anything by a Vatican spokesman that says “Lennon is forgiven” or anything even close. It is **** like this that causes people (especially non Catholics) to think that the Church is stuck in a rut from centuries ago.

I’ve been a huge Beatles fan since Day 1. I think I was maybe 12 when he made that statement and I cringed at the time because it gave parents and nuns the ammo they wanted to forbid listening to the ‘long-haired foreign smart aleks.’ Even at that age, I knew John Lennon was just too mouthy for his own good and I didn’t take it seriously. The bruhaha it caused didn’t last long at home or at school, thankfully. I thought it was kind of cool that the Vatican newspaper acknowledged the musical worth and legacy of Lennon-McCartney’s songwriting talents and just wanted to share it with you folks. There are actually two other threads on the forums that came after this one; I don’t think any have been pulled yet.
