My wife and myself are big “Lost” fans.

The new season just began last evening, and it continues to be awesome.

One of the things that my wife and myself have noticed in the writing, is that there seems to be a Catholic influence in it.

Many people in the ABC site on Lost, believe that the crash victims were actually killed, but are now in purgatory.

We keep flipping on and off on this theory.

Anyway, just though I’d share one of my vices. 🙂

That was the impression I had from the first season. But I gave up watching it last year because ABC would show a few new episodes, then show a few old episodes, then run two shows back to back on one night… it was just too much work to try to keep up with all the schedule juggling.

At least one of the writers is a devout Catholic. I think it was Carlton Cuse, but I’m not sure. I heard an interview with him on a Catholic podcast.

Purgatory was an idea that got tossed around a lot last season, but they came out and officially said it’s got nothing to do with purgatory.

I know, last year was frustrating how they’d show two new programs followed by 4 repeats.

However, I stuck with it.

My son didn’t become a fan until last year, when he bought the DVD of the 1st season. He then watched the repeats of the 2nd season during the summer. Now he and his wife are addicted.

One of the problems the producers are having with the program is the cost. The effects are equivalent to those in a large production movie,(especially last evening) but it’s only a TV show.

Yeah I heard them say that, but then they kinda danced around the subject.

When the show started last evening, my wife and myself agreed, they were not in purgatory. By the end of the program, we wern’t so sure.

The writers have another ingenious scheme.

Last evening, one of the new characters introduced, is apparently writing a book. The writers plan is to actually release this fictional character’s book, in which the viewers can purchase it and get inside clues to the story.

Pretty intelligent idea when you think about it. They have 40 million viewers. If only 10% buy the book? You do the math,

Also, the whole concept of bringin the viewers into the plot through the book, pretty clever, in my humble opinion.

I think they’ve already released that book! I can’t remember what the title was off-hand, but it was part of the alternate reality game that went on this summer before the season started. Coincedentally, the book is written by an author whose name is an anagram for purgatory.

I’m a LOST addict. It’s one of the best shows of all time. I agree, it is very well written. However, when it comes to Catholic elements in some of the story lines, the writers, are either misinformed or purposefully making errors. This has been discussed on these forums before. For example, in the first season Locke’s mother told him he was “immaculately conceived” and last year Mr. Eko, said when “John the Baptist baptized Jesus he washed away His sins”. I wish they’d either get it right or leave these subjects alone.

Anyway, the premier was awesome, as I’d expected.

My biggest questions involve what happend to Dharma’s original purpose. Why do all the stations look so out of date and abandoned, and yet their homes and clothes last night look so new and well taken care of? What happend to the animals? Did they just let them all loose (remember the polar bear and horse?). Are they only experimenting with humans now? Why did they choose Jack, Sawyer, and Kate? Do they want to observe them, because of their love triangle. Why did they put Sawyer and Kate in animal cages and Jack under an aquarium? How old was that fish biscuit?

I hated the huge blocks of time between new episodes! But, alas, I just found out they are planning the same thing for this season. We will get new episodes for the next 5 or 6 weeks, then it will be either repeats or nothing until February. That’s ok, though; it will give me a chance to catch up on “Criminal Minds”.

Karen, keep in mind it is fiction. 🙂

As far as Locke’s mother, who knows what she ment? Eko, remember, he’s not really a priest. He had a religious experience on the Island, but before reaching the Island, he was a drug smugler. His brother who was killed while trying to stop the drug shippment, was a real priest.
Eko decided he was a priest after his experience on the island.

I’ve wondered about the animals as well. Were these ficticious animations that the Other’s were able to create?

Either way, they’re not in Kansas anymore. 🙂

I guess I lucked out on the episode scheduling thing. I didn’t even hear about the show until well into the second season, so I was able to go completely insane and watch the entire first two seasons in just two or three weeks 😉

There is always the dvd. I purposely did not watch any of season two since I rented the dvd for season one last year. Then I had a 3 day marathon for season two when the dvd came out September 5. That rental place was a war zone. I reserved mine a week in advance but people were crazy. I watched the premier and although it is much more fun to watch them all at once without comercials, I might try to watch it on tv this year.

I thought it might be Purgatory but aren’t we supposed to know we are dead and in Purgatory? I don’t want to have to not know I am dead. I thought the whole point of Purgatory is it is suffering but then you have hope you will get into Heaven. The purgatroy theory is interesting though especially since that girl seems to know everything about everyone like Jack and his life’s story as well as his ex wife.

Interesting since because of this show, I was kind of confused about what the Immaculate Conception was also. Well not because of the show but the show reinforced an unsure opinion. You can’t blame them. Lots of people think it means the Virgin birth.

Oh, the polar bear was manifested by Walt. Both times he is looking at a comic book with a polar bear on the cover right before it comes just like he was looking at a picture of an African bird and then one came flying into the window. He does this when he is upset since no one is paying attention to him.

I disagree. Here’s why…

In one of Dharma’s videos, it describes their mission statement and it specifically mentions studies in Zoology being part of their purpose, and even showed a polar bear. I can’t remember the name of the episode, but it’s in Season 2.

I’m not blaming the show for confusing me. I already knew exactly what and who the Immaculate Conception is: the Virgin Mary. However, I just don’t see the need for the writers to even mention things like this, if they’re not going to be faithful to The Church’s teachings. Yes, I know it’s a TV show and it’s not anything new for Hollywood to be doing this. It just bothers me that it’s part of one my favorite shows. I usually ignore shows and movies that include subtle attacks at Catholicism. On the upside, there’s always the possibility these errors will spark interest and people will seek the truth for themselves.

Why does it necessarily have to be a writer error? Lots of people use that term for a virgin birth, and Locke’s mother doesn’t exactly look like a theologian.

“Lots of people” still doesn’t make it right, and to reinforce my point again, nor does it make it necessary for the plot of the show.

well they throw things in there to make everyone wrong and everyone right at times with their theories but I still stand by my opinon. African birds don’t live in Austrailia and one happens to fly into a window when Walt is upset and looking at the book of African birds. Why else would they specifically have Walt looking at a comic book with a polar bear on the cover right before each one comes? Also, Walt is special and wanted by the others. This is mostlikely because he has that ability. Feel free to share how all these clues are not saying what I think they are.
