Love is not primarily a feeling, but an action, same with anger?

But we need to choose partake in the love making act, because we are individual persons with endowed with freewill. Since made in the image and likeness of God, we are called to love and to create, as He loves and creates… animals don’t make love and create… they only have instincts.
Yes - we need to choose to participate. And we can choose to partake of the sexual act - But the sexual act may or may not involve love.
Consider…Rape does not involve love.
“Hooking up” might involve friendliness and even affection - but Love?? I have my doubts since such people will do whatever they can to avoid the creative aspect of the act.

Just to be clear - I don’t have a problem with the term “making love” in general usage - I just like to make the distinction where it might benefit a conversation,
I need to further develop my thoughts here.
Thread like this are great for developing our thoughts.👍
Nice - but remember that in arguing this, the Atheist can argue that a child can be produced by rape which is not loving. Just saying…
i wanted you to speak on that…

Well first, I would not introduce the sex act as a manifestation of love precisely because of this probable comeback.
Second, if the atheist brings it up I would argue just as I have here, that we are talking about different things. An act that may or may not be “loving” and may or may not involve a proper degree and understanding of Agape, vis-à-vis aros or phliia or storge
(SEE HERE)

These distinctions are why I originally responded to your OP that I disagree that Love is primarily and action - rather it is primarily a state of being.

In Mt 5:43-48 Jesus speaks of loving and forgiving. He then says this:
[BIBLEDRB]Mt 5:48[/BIBLEDRB]

We must be perfect in love because that is what our heavenly Father IS.

This involves more than just actions, (which can be superficial). It involves our whole being.

Peace
James

Love is not a “mere” feeling. The word mere attempts to belittle the concept. Love is a feeling. Not a mere feeling. If you can concede that, I will answer your question.
Hi, feelings aren’t bad or good, i’ve heard… i think i agree to that, but love is more than a feeling.

*“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.” *

To me love is many things, a feeling and a action. It’s getting the actions right, by doing something for the good of others and not just for ourselves. Denying something for ourself for the good of another can be a tough decision, especially when our feelings come into play.

A priest spiritual director once told me love is what you are willing to do for the other person.
