Interesting observation, Uncompleted99, but not entirely accurate with the Catholic model of God. What we believe of God is that He is purely and entirely good. We also believe He is eternally powerful. On that note one *might declare this a paradox, as “good” obviously puts a cap on God’s range of power. What one should *recognize is that if two general claims conclude in a paradox, they’re probably not being interpreted in context. Which means God is eternally and infinitely good and powerful within those respective criteria. That of course means that God does not retain a “direct” lordship over evil. If God controls evil, it is through the use of His own faculties, which are inherently and without exception good in nature. “Control” of evil, within the context of God’s abilities, therefore also includes the exploitation (not the enactment or patronage) of evil itself in order to do more good.(n.b. I did the “Ask the Apologist” first, heard no reply for two weeks, so now I am here. I presume that is the correct path. If not, I apologize. )
It seems to me that humans are forced to play a game against our will: Love Me or Burn
This game is called life. According to you catholics, that is the purpose of life on earth - to prove your love for God or suffer eternal torture. Love Me or Burn!
It is unjust to force people to play any game without a real “opt-out” option.
(Arguably, one cannot be asked before one is created, so on the surface my complaint is illogical. But, your god is the lord of history - of space and time, right? Therefore, there is at least one option that could be offered: to never have existed.)
If we are forced to play this game against our will and with no real “opt-out” option, then this game seems like the creation of a sick, sadistic mind. The game itself is evil. Imagine parents doing this to their children - love me or die! Or even, love me or get out of my house! Neither of which is good. But, that is exactly what your god is doing and, literally, on an infinite scale.
Incredibly, you believe this is the entire purpose of your existence: to brainwash yourself into loving an entity that will burn you forever if you don’t.
Love Me or Burn!
Am I wrong?
Thank you for sticking up for us believers. You are right, hurtful or bitterness will not win arguments. Reason and logic are the best weapons, rather than biblical exegesis when your desired audience does not believe the Bible is inspired, or even was written as we believe.You seem to have a very polarised view of God. And you are wrong in stating that the ‘game is the creation of a sick, sadistic mind’…God gives people every chance to enter into His Kingdom…in fact He actually encourages it, so much that He sent Jesus to suffer for us all.
There is another thought, that it is only those who accept the Number of the Beast who will burn in eternal torment…the rest of us unbelievers will just cease to exist.
Now, I am a staunch atheist, so these views are not mine…but I am on a Catholic forum to learn…if I pose a question, I do not use inflammatory phrases…would you be offended if I called someone you loved sick and sadistic? I think so.
Please be respectful in the phrases you use…and you will learn a lot,
and if you really hate religion, then there are plenty of atheist forums on which you can post.

I’m not quite following. What if I said don’t jump off the cliff or you’ll be killed! Am I unjust to tell it to you straight? Is it unjust that you are, de facto, forced into the free choice to jump or not jump off the cliff?It is unjust to force people to play any game without a real “opt-out” option.
I’m sure many of us made the assumption that you were an atheist from your posts. I know that I did. I hope that at some point you will share your beliefs with us. It can help tremendously in framing answers.I went through every reply and tried to reply below.
I see a few common misunderstandings, which I presume are due to people skimming the post.
To clarify, (1) I am not an atheist, (2) I am suggesting that an withholding an “opt-out” option is unjust.
@JRKH,
Sorry - but you seem to have switched gears on me here. My response here was to your post complaining that we do not have “free will” - not about what might be considered just. The philosophical issue is what is “free will” - how does one define it?It is not a philosophical issue. If god is truly just then he would provide an option for people that do not wish to struggle through life “playing” the game - they’re not interested in heaven and they don’t want to risk hell. They want out of the game. That choice is not provided, so playing the game is forced, with only one way to “win” - conform. That is not just.
hhmmmm. It seems from the above that what you are rejecting then is faith. Since heaven “cannot” (or at least has not) been adequately shown or described to your satisfaction, you reject it.As far as heaven - I have no idea what heaven is, so why would I WANT something that cannot be described or easily referenced on earth - like Hell?
I agree that there are many things that “the world” considers fun that God and the Church teach are not permissible. This would be a far cry from saying the Catholics can’t indulge in a lot of fun. We most certainly can and do.Looking at the physical manifestation of the kingdom of god on earth, it would appear that Catholics can’t indulge in a lot of fun - sex outside of marriage, using contraception so that sex can be pleasure only, etc.
And a very wrong guess.If the kingdom of heaven on earth is that bereft of happy pursuits, I think it logical to assume that heaven is more aggressively so. But, that’s just a guess.
Oh gosh! None of us have ever heard this complaint before! You’ve totally changed our minds!(n.b. I did the “Ask the Apologist” first, heard no reply for two weeks, so now I am here. I presume that is the correct path. If not, I apologize. )

This does not really address the problems I have raised. You are not permitted to break the law and go unpunished according to the law. For example, you may not kill a man and go unpunished. Fleeing to another country doesn’t solve this problem; you are still a criminal.@polytropos,
I could always flee my current country and go to another one. Thus, I would still have an “opt-out”. But, in my post, I make the suggestion of removal of a person’s existence in space-time. The closest allegory would be a person committing suicide in your country scenario, which would still be an “opt-out” and the State would be unable to punish that person.
You’re complaining about having free will? You would rather have no choice?With your analogy to a boat you are closer, but no cigar. Like many of the posters that come after you, you think I’m complaining about the choice between Heaven and Hell. I’m not. I’m complaining about being forced to make that choice - or in your boat analogy - I’m saying that the person that put me in a boat in the middle of the ocean is unjust for doing so.
I agree; your proposal defies logic. It is either unworkable or leads to a tautology in favor of being; therefore, the ‘opt-out’ is untenable as an option.(Arguably, one cannot be asked before one is created, so on the surface my complaint is illogical. But, your god is the lord of history - of space and time, right? Therefore, there is at least one option that could be offered: to never have existed.)
The purpose of post #17 was to justify God’s ability to send people to Hell by presenting a theory which asserts that we human beings have control over how God treats us and where he will send us after we die.I went through every reply and tried to reply below.

First 6000 character response:
@Faxero,
An interesting response, but I don’t see how it answers my issue.
:yup:Also, I thought the entire reason that the fallen angels fell was because God’s children were to be ranked ABOVE them and that they rejected that and thus were cast to hell. That would mean humans would be #2, not #3.
Bingo. Refusal/inability to deal with reality on its own terms is psychosis.It’s a lot like God-or anyone else for that matter-warning us about the law of gravity by saying, “If you jump off that cliff you’ll die”. Should we be offended? To argue against such a law is to argue with Reality-an unreasonable but common enough behavior for us humans, incidentally.
