I’m in RCIA. I bought two rosaries (one for my wife and one for me) June 19 this year. I had them both blessed. I want to know if I’m normal or if anything I say is nuts.

A few times, I found my wife praying with my rosary – but I haven’t seen her pray with hers. She isn’t in RCIA yet. She says she is not Catholic.

I try to pray a decade each night before I go to sleep. Sometimes I miss.

I like to sleep holding my rosary in my hand – is that normal?
The rosary isn’t God, but I get some comfort from it.
Y’all do that? Or am I taking this thing too far?
Sometimes I hold it under my wife’s pillow (or leave it there) to bless her.

When I die, I want to be buried with my rosary wrapped around my hand. And with my Miraculous Medal (it wasn’t expensive). Not that they will do me any good.

I thought about wearing it. But it isn’t as handy.
I carry my rosary in my pocket with my keys.

I heard: When we pray holding a rosary, our prayers are joined with the prayers of the Church. Right?

When I gave my wife her rosary months ago, she also wanted our kids to each have a rosary. I didn’t buy them any rosaries to carry in their bookbags to school. If she wanted them she could buy them (and grow in her faith). She wanted them bad enough to go to the Catholic bookstore and buy them. I took them to the Catholic Church and had them blessed.

I like to hear Pope John Paul II pray the rosary (I have some CDs).
Sometimes, I start up the CD when it is time to go to sleep at night. Start to pray along and then fall asleep and let the Pope and Mary pray for me and my wife.

Love of the Rosary is both good and pious, it is the most splendid prayer in all the Church; East and West. (I do wish more of our Eastern brethren would adopt the Holy Rosary)
Our Lady and Our Lord are both greatly pleased when prayers upon it our said, the Hail mary glorifies both Christ and his Mother, while the Our Father gives sublime respect to the Father.
It is the key in which even the most grevious sinners can enter into heaven if they say it piously, for our Lady said “One day through the Rosary and the Scapular I will save the world”
This message was given to St. Dominic.

There are many stories of the Power of the Rosary, it is the scourge of Satan, the binding chains in which demons are jailed.

I recommend you pick up the book “The Secret of the Rosary”, by St. Louis De Montfort.

So, in short, it is perfectly normal and wonderfully holy.

the only way this could become wrong is if you attached more importance to the physical object than to the habit of continuing prayer and dedication of our day to Our Lady that it represents. for instance, the new fad of expensive rosaries worn as jewelry is a profanation, especially if they have been blessed. There is nothing wrong with collecting or appreciating beautiful rosaries, but when you “can’t pray right” with any rosary except your favorite, that would be a problem. The rosary prayer would become a problem if it replaced other prescribed prayer, such as during Mass when we are supposed to be focused on that prayer in communion with the whole church. We gave red rosaries to confirmation and RCIA classes and crystal rosaries to first communion classes. Teens and volunteers all got rosary rings that can go on a keychain. We are trying to get the point across that Catholics carry rosaries and use them, it is part of our identity.

There are times when pain and grief overcomes you and just clutching the rosary in your hand is like a burst of longing moan from the heart. To really love the rosary the right way is to love praying it. At a certain part of one’s spiritual journey the rosary always gives peace and joy to the heart. It is much harder to persevere praying the rosary during times of spiritual dryness, when you feel nothing and you don’t really feel like to praying it. These times bring greater graces than when your prayer is accompanied with consolations. It is easier to pray it accompanied with spiritual consolations though. But we grow more rapidly and our prayer is always more effective in the desert than in the mountain top. Remember, our salvation was bought for us in great pain and with sacrifice.

Dear friend

Everyone has given you good advice. The Rosary is not a magical object, it is the blessing and the prayers prayed on each bead that is important.

I don’t think you are doing anything wrong at all, after I have prayed my Rosary, I wrap it around my hand with the Crucifix in my palm and go to sleep. I’ve also fallen asleep holding a picture of Jesus, I’ve also fallen asleep before the Blessed Sacrament.

Don’t worry and continue your beautiful devotion to our Blessed Mother and Jesus Christ.

You can be buried wearing any sacred object you like, your Crucifix if you wear one and/or your Rosary if you want. Though you may consider leaving it to someone you love, the knowledge that you prayed on those beads will bring great comfort to your loved ones.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

When we pray we lift our hearts and minds up to God. If this is what you love and the way you love to do it is with the rosary there’s nothing wrong with that. This is kinda like the mother who misses her son and sits by the phone. She doesn’t love the phone but uses it to communiacate with her son. Prays to Our Lady are powerful. Peace.

I would like to offer a personal testimony to what you wrote here, Teresa. I have my grandfather’s Rosary…it was very dear to him, and was with him during his funeral. However, it was removed before his burial and given to me. This was when I was a young teenager, so we never had developed a very close relationship. Despite that, I am always comforted that my prayers are united with his whenever I pray the Rosary 🙂

Not at all! you have so much zeal for the Faith…it’s so refreshing. I love the Rosary…I pray several of them each day for different intentions…I even walk around the house with them wrapped around my wrist or tied to my apron while doing the dishes… Mary will always lead you to Jesus…don’t ever feel odd about praying the Scriptures with the Hail Mary’s as a sort of background music…(This isn’t original.)…I heard one of the priests who had daily Rosary on our Boston Catholic TV say this more than once …I liked that. God Bless, Annunciata:)

‘normal’ is overrated. 🙂

God bless you and your crazy rosary attachment. 🙂

(ps, i like it too)

“If you say the Rosary faithfully until death, I do assure you that, in spite of the gravity of your sins ‘you shall receive a never-fading crown of glory.’ Even if you are on the brink of damnation, even if you have one foot in hell, even if you have sold your soul to the devil as sorcerers do who practice black magic, and even if you are a heretic as obstinate as a devil, sooner or later you will be converted and will amend your life and will save your soul, if-- and mark well what I say-- if you say the Holy Rosary devoutly every day until death for the purpose of knowing the truth and obtaining contrition and pardon for your sins.”
St Louis de Montfort, Secrets of the Rosary.

My Dear Friend,

I’m in RCIA too, I recently prayed the Rosary for the first time, and I was amazed at the peace that prayerful time brought to me…

While I was home for a family function, my mother, father and I went through a box of my Dad’s stuff, in it we found the Rosaries that my grandparents and one of my father’s aunts had used, Dad gave them to me, and it was the greatest gift I ever received. They mean so much to me. I never had a chance to meet my grandparents or My Dad’s aunts, so this is my connection with them, and it means so very much to me. I think that leaving those Rosaries with my father was their way of connecting themselves with him, and with me.

Peace be with you,
Jamie

I agree the rosary is an important part of my daily prayer, each morning before mass I pray it during my holy hour, And I to hope to be buried with it (along with my brown I scapular).

That must be it. I have been praying with it in my hand (not always). And so I associate it with prayer. So I love it just like somebody who loves their phone (but they really love the person they talk with on the phone). If the phone broke, a replacement would be just as well. If I lost my current rosary, another one like it (that was also blessed) would be just as well.

By the way, did y’all see Father Corapi last night? He talked mainly about the rosary. In the rosary, prayer is three different things (once you have it down really good). I might not have it right, but here is what I understood.

(1) Verbal or Literal (saying the words of the prayers). This we do in our bodies and it involves our brains.

(2) Meditative (dwelling on and focusing on the mysteries of the rosary – luminous, glorious, etc). I’m not there yet because I am still working on getting the words right. I suppose meditative is at a “soul” level – deep in your mind.

(3) Contemplative. A spiritual communion with Jesus or Mary.
Father Corapi said you need to take a college-level seminary course. I suppose so if he is going to use technical terms. Perhaps cradle Catholics have a hard time getting there. I will have a hard time too. But I do have contemplative prayer sometimes. Because I am at the purgative stage (repenting and working on letting go of attachments to sin), I have a very scientific and technical word for my contemplative stage. The whaahh – that’s right. A loud whaahh sound like a baby crying. Spiritually if I ever am in close communion with Mary, I can get a gift of tears because of what I have done to Jesus. Perhaps it will be quite a while before my contemplative stage is anything but a whaahh.

Would it be wrong to have and use a Rosary even if you weren’t Roman Catholic?

I see on your profile that you are Anglican. Anglicans also have rosaries (slightly different). For example, see franciscan.org.au/anglicanrosary.html or do a search for “Anglican rosary” on google. Or ask your Anglican Priest (if you want an Anglican rosary).

Or you can buy a rosary at a Catholic bookstore and freely use it.
And have it blessed by a Roman Catholic Priest if you like.
I’m sure your Anglican Priest would bless it if you wanted it blessed, and I’ll bet he wouldn’t even say anything much about it except to be glad that you want to spend more time in prayer.

As long as your intent is for spiritual good (prayer) and not desecration. Go for it.

I had my RC Priest bless a rosary for my wife and he knows she isn’t Catholic yet (nor in RCIA).

JamesS: Go for it. A useful rosary does not need to be expensive. Many people have very good rosaries that only cost between $4 to $20. But I wouldn’t buy a really cheap plastic one for an adult (less than $1 that looks like a cracker jack toy).

Bless You jmm08!!!

I have always Loved the Rosary too, for some unknown reason, even when I was a Protestant since birth. Little did I know God had a special plan for me–becoming a convert. I think your devotion to the rosary is beautiful! And how neat your wife is drawn to it now too! How long have you been a Catholic now?

YES, it is so comforting to say these beautiful Prayers isn’t it? I think after my confirmation, I’ll have the Priest bless my Rosary too! And I just might take you up on what a splendid idea of putting a rosary under your spouses pillow and praying for their conversion.

God Bless You!

jmm, you are very refreshing 🙂 love the whaaa.

i posted a couple of weeks ago about what happened to me, 9 years post RCIA (yep, convert here) when i was praying the rosary before mass one day. i came undone and i felt as though Mary was sitting right there with me, her arms around me and holding on close.

i’ll never forget that day.

i also make rosaries - very unique ones. the beads are all semi-precious and hand made, one bead at a time stringing. i love doing it and have been making them for about two years now. i’ve always longed for a special relationship with Mary and only when my son started going through the trial of his life did i even begin to feel what our Blessed Mother felt. who better to know when a mom needs a hug?

i haven’t fallen asleep holding a set of beads…yet. i have fallen asleep, envisioning that i was holding a set of beads though - and you thought you were nutty?

🙂

There is nothing wrong with a non Roman Catholic having a rosary and using it. It is a good thing. I think there are some Anglicans that pray the rosary. Just as long as you have respect for what it is and you do not use it as a fashion statement, like Britney Spears and Madonna, you should be fine.
