One day after a WorldNetDaily story brought national exposure, the home-improvement retailer Lowe’s dropped references to “Holiday Trees” in favor of “Christmas Trees” only.

Good! Do you know anyone who doesn’t celebrate Christmas and puts up a “holiday” tree?! The two go hand in hand. :banghead:

I saw this on Fox News. You know, I usually am not offended by the “Happy Holidays” or “Seasons Greetings”, but it is getting ridiculous when you can’t call a Christmas tree a Christmas tree. Is there any other holiday that calls for putting a pine tree in your house? Hannukah or Kwaanza? Anyone? I don’t have any problem with other people’s holidays. Why does everyone have a problem with mine? This is getting ridiculous. Are we sure they actually put the word Christmas up or did they replace “holiday trees” with “x-mas trees”? That’s the one phrase that really makes me angry this time of year: x-mas.

Xmas is intrinsically Christian. Chi (the Greek letter that looks like the English “X”) is the abbreviation for Christ. You’ll see it in all sorts of places

XP in your home Church I am sure (you’ll see it with the letters laid on top of each other). Chi-Ro the first two letters of the Greek for Christ.

IC XC on all Icons of our Lord, the Greek abbreviations of Jesus Christ. Of all the “holiday vs Christmas” bend ups. The use of “Xmas” over “Christmas” one is a non issue.

Well good!! I’m all for inclusiveness but IT’S A CHRISTMAS TREE for crying out loud!!! It’s okay for people to be different religions and celebrate different holidays for goodness sake! What is wrong with people?

Except that is not the intention of the secular use of it. It is intended to nix the Christ part of Christmas (for all those who don’t speak greek, anyway). That is why it irritates me.
And I also have never seen an X all by itself used to represent Jesus. The XP symbol and IC XC, yes. But never just a big old X by itself to replace Christ’s name. So it may be a non-issue for you, but the intention of our secular society in replacing Christ with an X, still bothers me.

I am not trying to be aggravating or agitating here OK? OK.

Why does it bother you (and “you” here is in general so others bothered by it can comment)? I don’t understand these sentiments.

Secularism is what it is. Does Christ suffer defeat by secularisms advancement? Or does Christ already have the victory? Does secularism win by “x-ing out Christ, or does Christ win by them using His symbolisms even if it is unknowingly?

The secular world is at odds, and always will be at odds, with the Christian path. Why be annoyed at that? It’s just the way it is.

We as Christians live as wayfarers in this life. The here and now is not permanent. Our permanence awaits us in Him. I think we have to keep that in mind and take all this other stuff with a grain of salt.

In the United States if we allow the secular world to go on its merry way, X ing out Christ and Cristmas then we are saying here take my money for this holliday which you are trying to defeat. Secularism is at odds with Cristianity and Crist has already won, but we must stand for Him. There are other countries where secularism has gone so far as to kill Chistians, I Challenge you to look at thier families and say, “well secularism is what it is and Christ has already won, so sorry about the torture.” We feel safe because we think we are in controll here but it is rapidly slipping away from us. Be a warrior for Christ with our prayers and words.

I would like to see the dots connected that supports: secularism leads to torture. This suggests a maxim that I just don’t see at all.

Yes we are warriors for Christ – but in what way? As far as spending money at Christmas – why do it? Why do we spend spend spend (I do it too! But am seeking to change) during Advent instead of sitting still, meditate, and pray?

Why do we as Christian allow secularism to dominate our lives? Is our anger at seeing secularism overtake Christmas just displaced anger at ourselves?

I like to put a Christmas Menorah under my Hanukah tree.
Do you still have room for your “Festivus Pole”?

I respectfully disagree.

Secular use followed Christian use. We did it first, and if secular society doesn’t understand *why * “X” is an abbreviation of “Christ” it is because it is ignorant. Let’s teach it instead.

(Aside: Do you know anyone who (seriously) *says *"*ecksmus" instead of “Christmas”, even when it is abbreviated as “X-mas”?)

I agree with alot of what you say.

But secularism is defined by webster as " indifference to or rejection or exclusion of religion and religious considerations"

The way to inforce this is to punish those who disobey, many forms of governance have used the non observance of secularism as a reason to torture, China, Nazi Germany, and many others throughout history.

As for what way we are warriors for Chist I guess that would be the way that He calls you to be a warrior for Him.

I agree hat we should not spend spend spend especially at a company that wants to sell Chistmas trees but won’t call them that. Any money that I must spend on Christmas should go to Christmas freindly places.

I don’t know why we allow secularism to dominate our lives, that is what I believe we should fight against.

Anger at secularism overtaking Christmas as you put it should be at ourselves for alowing it to happen and acting as if we are ashamed to believe what we believe.

Actually, YES!!!
That is why it bothers me. They do not understand and neither *will * they understand. They have *no desire * to understand (didn’t you notice that this thread was about “holiday” trees? They don’t want to acknowledge the truth at all.) And most Christians (yes, even Catholics) are not equipped to teach them.

So, do you think that because we have images of Mary and Jesus that society should be able to take that and use it like PETA in their signs and slogans because we used it first? And I still have never seen a big old black X, all by itself, used to signify Jesus Christ, even in the Church. Maybe we should use the X and turn it into a Cross. At least then people would get the connection.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Take a secular holiday like Thanksgiving, people don’t call it G- day or say happy G- day because G is the first letter in the spanish word that means thanks.
