I am having a discussion with friends on Lube. I know it is against teaching to use a kind with a spermicide, but we have heard from and NFP instructor that the lube itself may kill off sperm.

Is it morally permissible to use it still? Especially if the intention is not to kill it off, but as an aid. Is there a certain brand that is better than others?

Thanks.
Kate

I have no idea. That’s a good question to ask any of those Catholic bioethics center (I can’t remember the names off the top of my head but I’m sure someone will chime in with them shortly).

As a matter of prudence, I would think the proper answer is that it should be avoided except in cases where performance/completion of the sexual act really requires it.

The Church has no teaching against using lubricant to aid in the marital embrace.

Yes they have been shown to effect the mobility of the sperm. And they can be toxic to sperm.

So if one needs such–choose one that does not have such effect. They exist.

This sums things up nicely.

FYI: There is a brand of lube called Pre-seed, which is used by couples with fertility problems because it claims not to inhibit sperm mobility.

From the manufacturer:

Pre-Seed is the only intimate lubricant that it is safe to use when trying to conceive. Pre-Seed’s patented formula was uniquely developed by a woman Sperm Physiologist to match fertile cervical mucus in pH, osmolality and viscosity, providing an optimal sperm environment for couples who are trying to conceive. Most lubricants harm sperm or reduce motility and should not be used while trying to conceive. Pre-Seed’s formula is the only moisturizing intimate lubricant that does not interfere with human sperm motility and DNA quality, or damage embryo development.

And you can always run the brand by an NFP physician or nurse to see if these claims check out.

🙂

There are many very effective lubes that do not effect sperm in any way. “Glide” is one of them.

Actually if such is the same one as I heard mentioned before (with a name similar to that)–it is not one (one would have to research it)

This is the one that my NFP instructor recommends… 👍

There is no spermacide in “Glide” (unless they have a special version of it). In fact you can go to your local drug store and get a generic lube for 3.99 with no spermacide.

It is not the question of spermicide here (though yes of course that is to be avoided). The sperm can meet an ill fate without such ingredients and their mobility can be impeded.

Well to be honest one would have to use an exceedingly large amount of “Glide” or drug store lube for sperm impediment, but I could be wrong, so seeking out a conciencious physician would be wise. Thanks for the clarification.

We must be plenty fertile then. We consider the stuff a must and have gotten pregnant whenever we’ve not actively followed TTA NFP rules. Mind you, you don’t need much to free up the parts! 😉

We use a particular Astroglide make that is glycerin-free. Helps yeast sensitive ladies avoid problems.

Such would be a misunderstanding of how many lubricants work -they do in fact impend and otherwise harm sperm.

That is the “glide” that I believe was recalling above that was noted as not recommend (one would have to research for sure but that is what I recall) . But many if not most will impede the mobility of the sperm or harm them. This is a real reality that is known --and some now exist that do not do not have these problems.

Astroglide and Glide are two different products. Astroglide says on the label, not a spermicide. I realize you say the sperm can be impeded but is there any data on this? Astroglide is a water based product. Basically purified water, glycerin and some bonding agents. You could be right though. Definetely a research deal.

What I am noting has nothing to do with if something is a spermicide (a contraceptive).

Yes there is data on this --various lubricants (which are not spermicides even) impede the mobility of sperm and can harm the sperm.

By the way glycerin is a sperm-toxic ingredient.
