Can somebody explain to me what a lukewarm soul is?

Revelation chapter 3:
15 I know about your activities: how you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the other,
16 but since you are neither hot nor cold, but only lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth.

Thanks.

Those that go through life thinking they are secure and in no need of change.

It is those that are the most passionate that are more open to God’s mercy. The pious ones are easy to understand. But its the one that are angry at God or His Church (or life in general) that are often open for conversion.

St. Paul’s conversion story is one quick example that comes to mind.

Have you ever seen the person who goes to Mass two or three times a year and thinks that this is “good enough”? That’s lukewarm.

But even the person who is angry at the Church and leaves it, will often find that they are “not filled” with any of the alternatives. This can often lead them back to the Church with more vigor.

Lukewarm Catholics can be those who do not accept all that the Church has revealed with regards to faith and morals, even if they go to Mass every Sunday and day of obligation, and to the Sacrament of Reconciliation occasionally. It appears to me that they are poorly catechized, and are not aware that Our Lord Jesus Christ gave the Church authority.

We can go on and on about examples, but basically they are those that feel that they are
a) either doing good enough to get to heaven - why try harder?
b) or are uncaring about whether or not there is heaven or not.

They are ships without a rudder.

I agree with the above posts. Also, its a severe criticism of those with lack of conviction.

Indifference to religion or faith is not defensable behavior. Either our faith is true, in which case we should/must be zealous for it or it is not true, in which case we would abhor it. Lukewarm indifference is a form of mediocrity which is paying lip service to faith, but clearly not believing, because if we have faith, we would be obedient to God’s commandments.

Blessings,

Brian
