What I thought was funny is that he uses Protestant writings to prove Scripture alone. He never explains that New Testament Scripture, in the form we know, did not exist for a couple of hundred years. What happened to those who did not have it? Nor does he address that Jesus said teach not write. A funny video though.
This was the proverbial straw that broke my back. Christ promised that the Church would not wilt even in the fiercest storms of hell against it, but there were no official Scriptures guiding Her, only the Spirit of Truth (as Christ promised) and the Traditions and letters or “memoirs” of the Apostles. There was wide opinion on which writings were worthy to be read in the Tradition, but not about the valid Apostolic Tradition itself. You tell me . . .where is the first emphasis placed?

In order to hold the position that the Church somehow got off track at any point after the Apostles died, to one degree or another, means that by the time the Scriptures were Canonized the Church was already off the rails. This destroys the credibility of the Scriptures, while denying the efficacy and Divine Promise of the Tradition of the Apostles’ Teachings that was the original “Sola Fide” and—without a shred of historical doubt— minus “Sola Scriptura”, by virtue of being promised by Our Lord, Himself according to those same Scriptures!

If the Church got wrong soon after the Apostles died, then the Tradition that birthed the Scriptures was wrong- plus 300 years, and, Christianity was officially recognized as the Religion of the Empire by the time of the Councils of Hippo (393) and Carthage (397) which list the same books of the Roman Church to this day. If the Church founded upon St. Peter by Jesus Christ Himself and that wrote and discerned the Sacred Scriptures is not Roman and Catholic, then the only possible contrary position is Eastern Orthodoxy which means THE Church is Eastern and Catholic (I wish both East and West were united under the Bishop of Rome, obviously).

As a Protestant, I assumed that at some unknown ancient time, the True Church had been corrupted without remedy by the pagan influences and doctrines of devils and that the “Falling Away” had been in progress from the time Christ died or soon after (or at the Last Supper with Judas). But true as that is (there were already many antichrists in the world, beginning with Judas, right?), what guaranteed that we could know the authentic and Orthodox Canon of Faith? Never did I question how it came to be that I knew about Jesus Christ through trustworthy documents at all. It was Apostolic Succession, and the Traditions of the Apostles first and foremost.

If you trust Christ and the Scriptures then you must submit to His Authority to safeguard His Church through His Spirit. If not, you have already granted yourself to skepticism. It is a short step to Higher Criticism and shorter again after to Deism and agnosticism.

Rome has fallen. Byzantium has fallen. The Ottomans, the British, the Austrian, Russian, Soviet and every empire or attempted coupist revolution has come and gone (or will go shortly). There is One institution that has survived antiquity, just as Her Founder promised. All else is subsidiary (even if prior) in the History of the West and to varying degrees in the East, as well. Protestantism is a derivitive religion (be it Lutheran, Calvinist, Anglican, LDS, Jehovah’s Witnesses or Christian Identity whackos), and its makers are the men and women who discern the scriptures outside of the Apostolic Traditions for themselves, which necessarily places them outside of the Church that handed those very Scriptures down. It is the equivalent of denouncing your parents to the House Committee on Un-American Activities as communist spies in order to get your inheritance into your own hands to do as you will instead of spending it on college (or the Catechism, as it were).

It is awkward that so many evangelicals are conservatives or traditionalists while holding the doctrine that spawned moder secular humanism and the political history of the left in the first place (I define what is true or not for myself in all matters of faith, science, reason, morals, ethics, politics, etc; etc; i.e., postmodern, progressive democracy).

If there was a time when the Church fell away, it was when Luther, Calvin and Zwingli set Europe on fire with the doctrine of the autonomy of the self, despite their individual intents.

The saddest thing is that Luther was right about the wilderness the Church of his day had drifted into, because how different would the West look had there been the necessary corrections before Luther’s doctrine slipped out for popular consumption and the Church was divided again? But old political rivalries were exploited by the Nobles of Europe to fan a flame in the commons that would wrench control of the Religion and Wealth from the Church and into their hands alone (Sola Manus Meas?). With a largely illiterate populace who was to know what the scriptures really meant anyway. They could make their own State religions— these kings and princes, be they brilliant, Illiterates, plaigarists or novices. Zwingli, Marx, Neitzche, Heidegger, Sartre, Rorty, or Benny Hinn, they all have one thing in common . . . They are all in the Protestant tradition.

All my best . . .

But God did write, unless you believe that the NT is uninspired. The Gospels and the letters were passed from church to church copied and then fowarded to another church. Peter compares Pauls writtings to the OT scriptures and of cource the early church went to synogogue on Saturdays.
The Scriptures are inspired. Jesus did not tell His Apostles to go and write down what I said so that it will be the final word. NO what He said was Go and teach. He first established a Church with His authority given to Peter that was passed down. It is funny that your link states the authority is not coming from scripture but from other “Protestant” leaders. I find that Ironic that a speech on Solo Scripture is defended not by Scripture but man.

So now what is true or moral is according to Luther’s conscience. That’s really what he is saying. All these “sola” statements are summed up as, “What I think is right.” Apply that to everyone and you have the source of all liberalism. “Truth is according to how I see it.”
Unless Luther had a benefactor He would have been murdered like those that went before him. His crime? To believe the scriptures.
And to believe they had more authority than the pope.

Luthers courage saved hundreds of millions from false doctrines.
It’s more like Luther’s pride led millions into false doctrine. We see it today with the thousands of different communities with their own versions. Tell me which one is correct? The Baptist?, the Lutherans?, The Church of Christ?, the Mormons?, the Methodists?, the Episcopalians?, the LDS?, the Nazarenes?, the Non-denoms?, the Mennonites?, the AOG? Joyce Meyers?, Kenneth Copeland?

In my local phone book there are 78 different categories for local churches. The non-denoms take up one full page themselves. I also live in a less populated area of the country. No telling how many more there are in heavily populated areas. Which one has the “correct” doctrine Hisalone?

I’m figuring you’ll say all of them as long as they’re not Catholic?

Why was Paul of Tarsus taking up collections on Sunday then?
**Why do Catholics have the least amount of US tithing of all denominations?

Tracking only money given to churches, synagogues and mosques, apart from other causes:
• Giving USA, a non-profit foundation that studies philanthropy in the United States, in its 2008 report found 33.4% of estimated total giving, $103.32 billion, went to houses of worship and denominational organizations in 2007.

• Five percent of American Christians overall (8% of all Protestants and 2% of Catholics) tithe, according to a 2008 study of giving by the Barna Group, in Ventura, Calif. Protestants gave their church an average of $1,705 per household and Catholics gave $984, while those in non-Christian faiths gave an average $905, Barna found.

Near those non-Christian faiths…yikes.

None of it; Protestants or Catholics is very good; the total of 8% Protestants & 2% Catholic that tithe. Of course tithing was for Israel’s theocratic society.

“Now this {I say,} he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one {must do} just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
“For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God…for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all,”**

**Amen!!! Truths Luther spoke in light of the gospel of Truth; particularly on the doctrines concerning salvation as taught in the Scripture, which allowed for the purifying of God’s Word and the Holy Spirit responded!

Unfortunately a lack of doctrinal preaching and laziness of people concerning the reading and studying of the Word has lead to a severe weakening of the gospel, which is why we see so many being led astray and into false discipleships.

Thank God the Lord is coming soon; in a few more generations we may not see the true gospel of Jesus Christ, which is the only way to salvation. **

You call yourself a Christian?
Yes because he and I believe Christ is our Lord and Saviour (second person of the Holy Trinity) who died on a cross, resurrected and was assumed into Heaven body and soul. Oh and by the way, he left a (singular) Church that would be the pillar and foundation of truth. God bless.

What are these truths, in your opinion?

Do you believe that human beings have free will?

If you do, then according to Luther you are basically on the side of the “Papists.”

Which has more authority the pope or scripture?
It’s not an either/or Hisalone. Since this is rehashed for the umpteenth time, you know where the Catholic Church sits, on a 3 legged stool. Jesus Christ left His authority to Peter. This authority is handed down through Apostolic Succession. The authority is 3-way- Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture, & the Magisterium. It’s all three. You know this, so why ask?

But you still haven’t answered my question. Since you know it’s not the Catholic Church, please tell me which church has all the correct doctrines.

Hisalone:
You start a thread with a title like this, Hisalone, and you’re only baiting a verbal spat. It does no good.

Martin Luther, Founder of the Reform, Speaks on Mary
In his sermon of August 15, 1522, the last time Martin Luther preached on the Feast of the Assumption, he stated:

There can be no doubt that the Virgin Mary is in heaven. How it happened we do not know. And since the Holy Spirit has told us nothing about it, we can make of it no article of faith . . . It is enough to know that she lives in Christ.

The veneration of Mary is inscribed in the very depths of the human heart. (Sermon, September 1, 1522).

[She is the] highest woman and the noblest gem in Christianity after Christ . . . She is nobility, wisdom, and holiness personified. We can never honor her enough. Still honor and praise must be given to her in such a way as to injure neither Christ nor the Scriptures. (Sermon, Christmas, 1531).

No woman is like you. You are more than Eve or Sarah, blessed above all nobility, wisdom, and sanctity. (Sermon, Feast of the Visitation, 1537).

One should honor Mary as she herself wished and as she expressed it in the Magnificat. She praised God for his deeds. How then can we praise her? The true honor of Mary is the honor of God, the praise of God’s grace . . . Mary is nothing for the sake of herself, but for the sake of Christ . . . Mary does not wish that we come to her, but through her to God. (Explanation of the Magnificat, 1521).

Luther gives the Blessed Virgin the exalted position of “Spiritual Mother” for Christians:
