Lutherans are Mormons

Hey everybody, long time, no see. Missed you all.

So, I’m now living in OK and I have a job as Front Desk Et Al at a salon and the Massage Therapist said he grew up Mormon (and is now Fundamental Independant Baptist, I think), and…said the church he used to go to is Lutheran. That’s why Lutherans have “Later Day Saints,” on their churches, because they are really Mormons. I told him I never saw, “Later Day Saints,” on a Lutheran Church and then he told me that I never will because they don’t have that on their churches, but, it’s the same thing.

I pointed out to him that Mormons were American in the 1800s and Lutherans started in Europe in the 1500s. He told me, “Same difference.”

Maybe he got Mormon and Catholics confused at some point, I have no idea, BUT, DOES ANYBODY, Mormon, Lutheran, or Other know what he’s on about? Anybody heard any theory like this in any way?

If he was not joking with you, it must be some of the stupidiest claims ever uttered.

How can he say “thats why they have latter day saints on their churches” and when you question him he says “you will never see it because they have not but it is the same”?

So the question is, do they have ? or do they not?

Very confusing. Seems like he is playing a game with words.

No, they are not the same. Not even close.

Perhaps he views anything not Fundamental Independent Baptist as “same difference”. 🤷
 
I think it would be safe to say that Lutherans are as far from Mormons as the Catholic Church is.:eek: While we inhabit the same planet, that’s about as far as any similarities go.

A. The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, together with the vast majority of Christian denominations in the United States, does not regard the Mormon church as a Christian church. That is a crock.

The noted LDS historian, B H Roberts said that Mormon anti-Catholicism extended to the “high churches” Lutherans are among that group.

Since Mormonism’s roots are in religious fundamentalism, particularly young Earth and literal six-day creationism, your friend’s beliefs as a fundamentalist Baptist,are more closely related to Mormonism than he would like to believe.
 
The only way they are the same is that Lutheran and Mormon both end in n.

It’s nice to be pleasently surprised from time to time. I actually thought the OP was gonna make the claim that Lutherans are Mormons, and had already gone into DEFCON 2-mode…

I think I am safe in saying that there are more LDS evolutionists than there are LDS ‘young earth’ or ‘literal six-day creationists,’ though of course there are some of the latter.

it is, after all, perfectly OK to be Mormon and evolutionist.

Trust me on this one; fundamentalist Baptist beliefs have very little to do with Mormon doctrine. They do hate us, y’know.

As to what beliefs we may share with Lutheranism, I haven’t the faintest idea…except that we do both believe in Jesus the Christ as our Savior. Martin Luther’s ideas don’t march too well with us, as far as I can remember, but…it’s been awhile since I looked that deeply into Lutheran beliefs.
