Lynndie England gets 3-year sentence
The charges carried up to nine years, but prosecutor Capt. Chris Graveline asked the jury to imprison her for four to six years. The defense asked for no time behind bars.

“She was caught up in this chaotic situation like everyone else,” said Mestrovic, who also testified that officers at Abu Ghraib “knew or should have known what was going on”… No officers have gone to trial, though several have received administrative punishment.

Graner, 37, testified that he, England and others who worked the overnight shift in a high-security section of Abu Ghraib had scant supervision. “It seems like the junior soldiers were on their own,” Graner said. “We had little leadership”…

At times, he said, the intelligence personnel were actually present for the abuse. “I nearly beat an MI detainee to death with MI there,” he said before Col. James Pohl, the judge, interrupted his testimony.

Good for her…hope she learns something in those 3 years.
I have to agree with Vern …all should be held accountable!

That Brigadier General Karposki has escaped court martial is a travesty.

Yes, the officers should be tried – right up to and including the Commanding General.
I agree. We had the same thing go down up here concerning the torture of Arone in Somali. Whistleblower Pvt Kyle Brown got 5 years hard time. His colleague ‘hanged himself’ in prison. The CO’s got nothing. The senior command got nothing. And Chretien dismantled the entire Queen’s Own Airbourne Regiment.

I don’t keep up with Canadian news, but I remember that incident. A real disgrace.

As if enlisted men are autonomous agents in a war who don’t take direction from officers!

What officers in a war every get court-martialed - except Captains and down? Talk about the Generals’ Protective Society in action.

You are right. Those abuses were, if not directed by, then at least condoned by those EMs’ higher-ups, and they should be facing charges.

But, it’s the usual same-old, same-old.

Certainly Karposki had a duty to know what was going on – and she failed miserably.

Holy c***…for once we’re in 100% agreement with regards to matters involving the military.

In this instance, of course. Military discipline is important.

For me, this sentence will only be fair if she serves the full 3 years and doesnt end up with time served for good behavior and actually only gets something like 1.5

Amen.

I would feel better about her conviction if the officers up the line were tried and possibly the president, sec def, and AG investigated since they may have fostered/promoted an attitude that allowed these crimes to occur.

Does everything have to be political?

Brigadier General Karposki is the key – she was the commanding general. She failed in her duty. It’s difficult in such a case to make those above her guilty.

I am satisfied that she was demoted from general to colonel. She, for her part, is saying she was scapegoated. All [other] senior commanders have been cleared of any crime. Nine junior officers have been convicted.

This is not perfect, but certainly closer to transparent than the Arone Somalia affair in Canada.

Karposki was the commanding general – her claims about being a scapegoat show she hasn’t admitted wrongdoing, nor shown remorse for her failings. I think she should be court-matrialled and given the maximum punishment, pour encourage les autres.

I agree. But I am satisfied that this discipline is at least a step in the right direction as opposed to the complete cover-up and scapegoating of a whole unit in the Arone affair.

Who were the senior officers in Abu Graib by the way? On what grounds were they acquitted?

Karposki was the senior officer and the commanding general. The people she blames were civilian intelligence agents.

A commissioned officer cannot abdicate his or her commission to a civilian. A commanding officer is wholly responsible for his or her command, for all it does and all it fails to do.
