Thousands gathered nationwide to celebrate the centenary of Blessed Mary MacKillop’s death, and at the North Sydney Mass, Sydney Archbishop Cardinal George Pell said her canonisation is “almost completely certain”.

We had a sermon about her at Mass yesterday. The priest was at her tomb on the 8th. I pray she is close to declaration of sainthood. We need an Australian saint like her.

Praise be to God! May Blessed Mary MacKillop be canonized as a saint and may her memory be eternal. 👍

My whole family went to Sydney to see John Paul 2nd canonize blessed Mary MacKillop
It was truly beautiful we love Mary MacKillop.
Oh! What joy it will be to call our blessed Mary MacKillop Saint, Australia needs her just as much now as we did back then.
Thank you our dear Mary MacKillop

Great news… then oneday maybe Eileen O’Connor and Caroline Chisolmn. 😃

From your lips to God’s ears - although I’m more familiar with Caroline Chisholm than Eileen O’Connor.

I think it is good Mary McKillop has been effectively made a saint. While I disagree on the issue of miracles (I find the notion of God arbitrarily interfering with the natural order problematic) given the contributions of the Church to Australia from the beginning of the nation by many good and sincere Catholics, recognition of ‘saints’ is well overdue. I think though her sainthood should be recognised not because of alleged miracles but by her exemplary life of charity and good works, including her remarkable efforts to educate and to help the needy and poor of Australia in the face of trenchant opposition from the status quo, both secular and religious, of her time. Her courage to persevere in her role, often as a despised ‘no-body’ in a time when the church and society had a low view of women and excluded them from ecclesiastical and secular power and institutions, and against the callous tendency of society to let the poor and marginalised rot in their miserable station in life, should stand as a good example as how saintly Christians can manifest justice, compassion and also prophetic critique of both the church and society when required.

I am so glad that Mother Mary MacKillop is going to be made a saint, she lived a amazing life, and her work is still being done today.
