Madonna to be discussed at Polish exorcists meeting

Long the scourge of the Catholic Church, Madonna has often triggered Christian ire, once going through a mock crucifixion during one her stage shows.

Now her music and shows will come under the scrutiny of priests trained in the art of defeating demons, treating satanic possession and looking for the devil in a section of the conference dedicated to finding evil in popular culture.

“Part of the conference is dedicated to the hidden subliminal message in communication, and the choice of this subject was inspired by the woman who dares to call herself Madonna,” said Father Andrzej Grefkowic, an exorcist and one of the organisers of the conference. “We’ve been worried about her concerts.”

Seems like a lot of modern pop music and musicians would be good case studies for exorcist conferences.

It seems to me that a discussion of Madonna with regard to anything but her music is a challenge at best and a waste of time at worst, even if done purely on an intellectual level. She has transformed herself so many times that it is difficult to know exactly what her music conveys anymore, if anything. Further, the notion regarding whether subliminal perception exerts much of an influence on people’s behavior has always been controversial in the psychological community, with many psychologists not believing the phenomenon even exists.
 
Seems like a lot of modern pop music and musicians would be good case studies for exorcist conferences.

Let’s not forget the so called Lady Gaga.

I don’t think these guys know what they are talking about. She “dares to call herself Madonna”? It’s her real name.

And ditto what meltzerboy said. It sounds like they are hung up on her name and somehow that makes her music and performances stand out from the others.
 
I’m sure Madonna is pleased that she is getting some free publicity! Don’t forget, that she named her daughter “Lourdes”, too! I am sure she will become repentant and rejoin the fold sometime soon. Once a Catholic, always a Catholic. I vote that we just pray for her and that be the only time we bring up her name.😃

True, though it does seem to me that she has capitalized on the religious connotations of her name.

I agree.

It seems like most pop/rock/etc. artists like to take shots at religion and if they were raised in that religion it’s more pointed. She probably would have used some of the same imagery but if her name was Tiffany it would not have been as notable.
 
Isn’t Madonna’s birth name Maria Ciccone? I thought she had adopted herself the name “Madonna”, so in truth the bishop is correct when he says she calls herself that. Whether it was presumptious or not to do so is a matter of opinion, I suppose. After all, the name “Jesus” is common among Spanish-speaking peoples, and I doubt they mean offense when they name their children that.🤷

I do have to agree on an emotional level that it is offensive to see one make the intentional choice of assuming the name of the Holy Mother while taking such delight in acting in maligning the crucifixion of her son. It’s distasteful at best, and blasphemous at worst.

I remember begging my mother to allow me to attend a Madonna concert my friends and family had gotten tickets for back in the 80s. It was one of the few things I was refused, and my mom would not even entertain the notion. Looking back, she was right to do so despite the fact that I didn’t really comprehend the magnitude of disrespect we would have been supporting.

Michael Jackson’s “Bad” tour ended up getting our money that summer.👍

Her real name is Madonna Louise Ciccone and she was named after her mother.

Just checked wiki and she chose Veronica for her confirmation name.
 
I hope people begin to see that things like music and literature choices can in fact have a negative impact, major or not, on their spiritual lives. Far too many people think it is just so! implausible that listening to pop music could do such a thing; they believe the whole world is completely innocuous and ultimately sterile except perhaps serial rapists and murderers. It’s a close relative of the, “YOU SILLY goose, that couldn’t happen in America!” line of thinking. People often do have those beliefs.

No big. I only know this because I’m interested in names (I got my first baby name book when I was in 7th grade) otherwise I think it’s kind of usual to know the middle names of celebrities, cousins, random classmates…

Excellent point. People tend to give music and musicians too much credit when they dissect simple pop tunes to try and find some deeper meaning.

Next thing you know, they’ll start playing things backwards to see what it “says….” :eek:
 
How about we have more priests trained in the art of increasing Mass attendance, or accurately and passionately teaching the Faith instead? Does it really take a trained priest to tell us which secular musician puts out garbage? I guess that’s one way of having job security. LOL

Madonna has to come up with all that wild stuff to distract people from her singing. It seems to have worked well for her. More proof that fools and their money are soon parted.

At least the priests are trying to deal with pop culture and the effect it has on people, especially young people.They shouldn’t just ignore it.
Madonna is middle aged now and doesn’t have the same effect she used to have. But she’s a good example of someone who will do anything to remain in the spotlight, including trashing her (former) religion. There are many who follow in her footsteps, so it’s a good idea to study the effects of this on young people and ways to keep them away from this kind of garbage.
 
OK, maybe it shouldn’t be ignored, but IMO teaching the beauty of God and the teachings of His Church will give people the tools, if needed, to tell garbage from good. We don’t need another conference or meeting. It ain’t rocket science folks! The Church and secular society has been conferenced to death.

‘They’ do say the Devil has some of the best music with which to lure the unwary, but then so did the Siren and Lorelei :eek:

Take consolation that the most beautiful music and singing goes on in Heaven and not here, and certainly not in Hell.
