So, I definitely thought Oi! was just an enthusiastic sound you were making because you like Boston Streetpunk. You know, for some reason you get so excited when you say it that you have to say Oi! I don’t know if that makes sense. :rotfl:

Then it occurred to me this might be a kind of music, as you had separated it with a slash.:doh2: Then I laughed a little more.
Sure enough, (Wikipedia)

Naturally, you knew what that was, but I certainly didn’t.
😃 Oi! does sound odd coming from an American, but I am here to assure everyone that it is a very valid and very fun form of music! And don’t let wikipedia scare anyone away when they mention skinheads, as the majority of actual skinheads are not the typical neo-nazi white-pride boneheads we see on television…a rowdy bunch indeed, but unfortunately this group of workingclass joes had gotten the short end of the stick thanks to the activities of a racist minority who enjoy the fashion…but I digress and apologize for adding a detour to the thread…👍

At the risk of dating myself:

Norman Greenbaum, “Spirit in the Sky”

Doobie Brothers, “Jesus is Just All Right”

and one of my favorites,

Jennifer Warnes, “Song of Bernadette” from Electric Blue Raincoat: Songs of Leonard Cohen** (1987)

Lifehouse with their song ‘Everything’
Jeff Buckley does an absolutely amazing cover of Leonard Cohen’s halleluia! so does Jason Castro.
I love Hillsong United’s ‘Lead Me To The Cross’ is good too!

if you want something heavier/louder, try mewithoutyou! The lyrics in their Brother, Sister album is pretty amazing- there’s a lot of Biblical references and i adore this one lyric ‘if ever You come near I’ll hold up high a mirror
Lord, I could never show You anything as beautiful as You’

but they aren’t a christian band. they sing about a more personal relationship with God, they are very honest. Putting it simply the main singer loves God but seems to hate himself. but i’ve been looking and reading some of their interviews lately, he seems to be a really great person.

Try all songs by Switchfoot and Jars Of Clay. Also the boyband Altarboyz.

Maybe not explicitly Christian… but certainly relating to the “Religious Sense” that lives in every human being.

U2 - Too many songs to list.
The Killers - Most of their new “Human” album.
Cold Play - Too many songs to list.

BTW - U2 is Catholic, The Killer’s lead singer is Mormon, Cold Play’s lead singer is “agnostic” which in my opinion is the only things that is indefensible.

Once you’ve asked the questions agnostic isn’t an option any longer, you must decide.
There is an ongoing thread in the pop media forum about U2. It turns out the drummer is a Catholic, the frontman and guitarist are Christians and the bass player is “spirtual”. I’ve heard that if it wasn’t for the bass player they considered going the Christian rock route.

Ben Harper: Blessed to Be a Witness; Church House Steps; Church on Time; In the Lord’s Arms; Mother Pray; Picture of Jesus; Waiting on an Angel; When She Believes.

As with most of these artists Ben can be quite secular at times. However, some of his songs (see In the Lord’s Arms and When She Believes) sound not only Christian but very Catholic.

You’ll may find that a lot of kids don’t know who Ben is, but he has a large following in the jam/blues circuit.

If you try, you can find a way to relate most songs lyrics back to God. He’s everywhere, including our music!

Learn to Fly by Foo Fighters
Feeling Stronger Every Day by Chicago
Most of U2’s songs
Unanswered Prayers by Garth Brooks
Fully Alive by Flyleaf
The Clincher (and most other songs) by Chevelle

A lot of songs relate the feeling of looking for something more, which you can easily turn spiritual on the kids. And a lot of the love songs, you can equate those to the love God has for all of us. Even the steamy ones, you could say that they are words that Solomon would have added to the end of his book had he written another chapter 🙂

You mentioned a lot of Christian bands, but you left out the greatest one: Jars of Clay! 👍
How about “The Voice” by the Moody Blues?

Jesus Walks is a wonderful song. Maybe Kanye West’s best material yet. Thanks for the lists you guys. Maybe I will search some of those songs.

Long Sermon on a pretty Sunday Brad Paisley

Please keep this post going. I’m always looking for good Christian music. There is a mainstream pop artist named Jill Philips who has an extremely good Christian song called “Live by the Sword …” In country music, there are so many that haven’t been mentioned yet. Alison Krauss’ “Living Prayer.” Brad Paisley’s version of “Old Rugged Cross,” performed for the Grand Ole Opry, was unbeatable, and he has a nice duet with Dolly Parton called “When I get where I’m going.” Randy Travis has redone a lot of old hymns really well, and has some new Christian songs worth hearing “You gotta raise Him up” and “Would I see myself in you?” is a standout. Ty Herndon’ s “Pray for me” is very good. Also worth a listen for the mainstream quality of their music and production values are the Christian artists Chris Rice ( Go light your world, Life means so much, I need a hero, Hallelujah, Love is gonna break through) and Watermark (The Purest Place).

Sawyer Brown - Joe
Randy Travis - Three Wooden Crosses

Brad Paisley - When I Get Where I’m Going
Randy Trav is has done a full blown gospel album. As has Jonathan Butler.
I’ve heard that Brad Paisley adds a hymn to every recording he makes. Jonathan Butler is adding a original gospel song with his latest recordings.
When Prince became a devout JW he dropped his worst stuff from his playlist and in concert adds a gospel song or set.

Bob Marley never mentioned rastafarinism specifically but mentions the Lord in many cases.

James Ingram and Michael McDonald had a big hit in Jah mo be there. Many soul/R&B singers of the last generation have tried their hands at gospel. The last current hit maker I can remember was Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child who made one when Beyonce seemed to be breaking out solo like Diana Ross did.

Greetings all. I’m hoping to gather some additional ideas for a list I’m compiling.

I’m hoping that you may have some additional songs that you can recommend. I thank you all in advance for any help you can offer.
In reading all the replies to your question, I almost forgot one of my very favorites:
Rick Niemi. catholicmusicnetwork.com/profiles/389.asp
His music has a “folk” flavor to it and the album has great variety… all the way from the happy tune and lyrics of “The Bible” :bible1: to some songs I find wonderfully appropriate for Lent… “The Handmaid’s Consent” and “Stations.” Give him a try. You can download songs from his album, “River of God,” from iTunes. Not only that, but he’ll answer your emails and he’s great to “visit” with. Last year, he donated several copies of his album to the V.A. where I work to distribute free of charge to some of our Catholic veterans. 👍 :yup:

Dc talk have some good songs, may not be of some peoples liking like jesus freak…but the morals are good, listen to coloured people

|Bon Jovi - try find a song that doesnt relate to God…quote ‘God makes no mistakes’

for young kids look at some of the stuff by hillsong - its not mainstream but stuf like ‘jesus is my superhero’ can make young children understand God a lil better

check out youtube

Most of the music I listen to is rock or alt…so my pics will be influenced by that:

Christian (or at least say they are) and often played on mainstream radio/TV:
Flyleaf
P.O.D.
Switchfoot
Chevelle
Plumb

Christian (pretty overtly Christian) but do not have the “typical” Christian sound:
Skillet (a VERY Christian rock band that is amazing and I find it hard to believe they have not hit the mainstream)
Rackets and Drapes (goth)
MXPX
Reliant K

As for other bands/singers like Kanye West…I would really stay away from using them as they really do not represent the lifestyle well for what they are singing. It could easily give kinds the wrong idea. They might feel it is OK to say one thing and totally do another, which is what these artists are doing. Creed is hit or miss if you want to use them. Scott Stapp did do a lot of wrong, but he has repented publicly and states that he is a Christian.

Not sure if these were listed earlier, but I wanted to add Lifehouse and Amberlin, both are bands made up of Christians, though not technically “Christian” bands. Both have great songs with good messages. If I am not mistaken I believe LIfehouse started as the worship band at a church…
