"OAKLAND – The A’s announced Friday that Grant Desme, the only player in Minor League Baseball to go 30-30 in 2009, has decided to retire from the game in order to pursue the priesthood.
“We respect Grant’s decision and wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors,” said A’s general manager Billy Beane.
Desme, 23, enjoyed a breakout season last year, as he established himself as a potential big league prospect by batting .288 with 31 home runs, 89 RBIs and 40 stolen bases in a combined 131 games over two levels of Minor League play.
The hot-hitting outfielder, who was a second-round pick by the A’s out of Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, further made his name known by capping off his season with an exceptional performance in the Arizona Fall League, where he was named Most Valuable Player. “
