An important question:
  1. Those teachings which are supported in the D & C can be defined as doctrines without contest?
  2. The teachings which are supported by the PoGP are not necessarily doctrines, even though that book is considered to be scripture?
  3. The teachings in the JoD can be cherry-picked at will?
  4. That the teachings in the BoM can also be cherry-picked at will is a given.
If those statements are all true, I have a minimal revision to do on my work.
They all have a caveat, especially #3. If it is a teaching that is viewed in a poor light today, you can’t use it. If it can be used in any way to paint an “all is well” picture of Mormons or Mormonism, please do use it, and use it often.

I lived an worked among Mormons for many years. Mostly very nice people, always ready to lend a hand. Here are their basic teachings as told to me… I will welcome any factual refutation point-by-point, not just a broad general disavowment:
  1. The LDS church is the true church of Jesus Christ.
  2. God lives on the planet Kolob and has several wives.
  3. God flew down from Kolob and had human sex with Mary and conceived Jesus.
  4. Jesus and Lucifer are brothers.
  5. Jesus had three wives: Mary Magdalene, and Mary and Martha, sisters of Lazarus.
  6. Jesus had several children by his three wives.
  7. Jesus is not God, therefore “The Divine Trinity” is a false teaching.
  8. The Catholic Church is “The Great Apostasy”.
  9. The Cross is a “satanic symbol” representing The Great Apostasy.
  10. All Protestant Churches are spin-offs of The Great Apostasy.
  11. The Bible is a collection of “false teachings” written by The Great Apostasy.
  12. The “Book of Mormon” is the true scripture of Jesus Christ.
  13. The President of the LDS church receives church law drectly from God on Kolob.
  14. LDS church law is superior to all man-made laws, includig the U.S. Constitution.
  15. When the earth ends, Mormons will travel by space ships to the planet Kolob.
  16. On Kolob, Mormons will receive a special blood transfusion, granting eternal life.
  17. Non-Mormons are the “Sons of Perdition” and will be cast into eternal darkness.
I’m no fan of Mormonism but this really isn’t fair at all. Sorry to any Mormon posters here, we really don’t think you believe this stuff. Talk about Jack Chic! This almost puts him to shame.

OK. So a statement to this effect is all that is necessary. That is even less revision than I thought.
Thanks, 'Becca.

SteveVH, I’m not ashamed of the truth.

The fluid teachings approach accompanied with emphasis on orthopraxy is more accurate, and just as damaging in comparison to Catholicism as a Jack Chic approach.

Agreed.

I know much of what has been posted is twisted, or old 19th century on and on.

Then you should only state the truth. Trust me, there is plenty with which we disagree with Mormons, we don’t have to make stuff up. It only degrades one’s credibility and places an unnecessary block in the way of communication.

From my conversations with active LDS members, including some of my family members, I can confirm all of the above is authentic LDS Church teaching with the exception:
9.
11.
15.
16.
17.
But I can’t dismiss the above because of the way their Church works, more & more teachings are revealed to them as they gain higher & higher rank within their Church. You may have been speaking with a LDS member to whom more had already been revealed.

Agreed.

Twisted and embelished. Half truths mixed with truths. Some are just flat out lies. Very little is actual LDS doctrine from what I see (though I am never surprised).

Ignore the truth? Can’t refute it on a point-by-point basis? Take the easy way out. Cut and run. In the Marines we had a name for this.
Ok, you want to go there?

How many times have people on these boards told you that your whacked out ideas or perceptions of mormonism are WRONG.

You’re talking about what you **think **you **remember **from some dead coworker, and have not provided any credible source to back up anything you’ve said.

We’ve got a name for that too.

Also, look at my profile, if that isn’t too difficult for you. I am CATHOLIC. I don’t have to refute anything about mormon doctrine. Duh.

You were a Marine, good for you. I was Air Force. What’s your point? I’ll help you out. You don’t have one!

I want you to read this next statement over a few times, in hopes you will comprehend it.

Several of the posters who are telling you that your ideas are wrong, are people who left mormonism.

If you notice, these conversations include references to actual material concerning the subject. Maybe you should try that sometime.

Remember, there is a very old saying that goes something like this. “It is better to be thought a fool, than to speak, and remove all doubt.”

Now you are on ignore, But I pray that you actually gain some knowledge by reading what some of these ex-mormon posters have to say.

I tried sending you a PM but your mailbox is full.

Wow! I must havve touched a nerve. I didn’t know you were so gentle, kind, and sensitive. Please accept my sincerest apology. Meanwhile, study up on Mormonism and have a great day.

I think you should take an appropriate look at the situation. It sounds like you have already. Have you considered talking to your wife and say
“I didnt realize the degree to which the LDS faith would be involved in this and, as a Catolic I dont feel comfortable engaging in something against my faith.”

Let her respond, but truthfully I think you should be able to do what your conscience says without fear of damage. Would you expect her to be scout mother of a Catholic troop? Certainly respect her faith, but I think it isnt too much to ask that your is respected.

  1. Code:
You never see a Cross on a Mormon church, only an antenna.
  2. A Mormon will lie with his hand on the Bible, but not on the Book of Mormon.
  3. For now, the two space ports will be at Salt Lake City and Independence, MO.
  4. Blood is replaced with something like embalmng fluid, assuring eternal life.
  5. This is established doctrine going back to Smith himself.

To get back to topic, the original poster needs to have a good understanding of his own faith and to be well catechised. He also needs to make it clear that he is not going to become mormon both to his wife and the very nice person who got him involved in the first place. I can imagine his wife will have a great deal of hope invested in her husband’s involvment with the scout troop, just the first step towards conversion that she obviously hasn’t been able to achieve over the past 7 years by other means. He must take thisseriously and be totally and gently honest.
