Zinc itself is toxic in sufficient quantity, and tends to be found in combination with other, even more toxic, minerals, such as lead. Certainly, the processing is “dirtier” than extraction, but extraction alone does pose significant long-term environmental hazards. Zinc and its companion metals were laid down millenia ago, and over a very long period of time, by water containing low concentrations of the minerals. Typically, it’s by way of “downflow” in brecciated rock, though it could be lateral, through cracks in solid formations. The minerals have an affinity for certain rock strata, particularly limestone in karst formations, and attach themselves over immense time periods to those strata, often in very high concentrations. Whenever those concentrations are mined, massive amounts of mineral are released in and around the points of extraction. Being water soluble (and certainly capable of being held in suspension in very high concentrations) those released concentrations inevitably end up in water tables, particularly in brecciated formations. Water tables can extend for hundreds of miles being, in effect, “rivers” that typically end up flowing into surface streams at lower altitudes.

In short, then, there is no possibility whatever that the zinc mining operation is not releasing concentrations of toxic minerals into the water tables of the area and, almost certainly, into areas unknown.

The Occidental/Gore “flip” certainly has an unpleasant aura about it, doesn’t it, even aside from all the environmental issues.

“The Pacific Yew can be cut down and processed to produce a potent chemical, taxol, which offers some promise of curing certain forms of lung, breast and ovarian cancer in patients who would otherwise quickly die. It seems an easy choice – sacrifice the tree for a human life – until one learns that three trees must be destroyed for each patient treated, that only specimens more than a hundred years old contain the potent chemical in their bark, and that there are very few of these yews remaining on earth.” - Gore, in “Earth in the Balance”, p. 119

Was he not aware that by the time the book was published, there were already known, viable alternatives for pacific yew bark? If I’m not greatly mistaken, at least one of them went into mass production the very year the book was published. But the alternative resource applications were known before that. Maybe he dealt with that in the book, and the pacific yew example was only meant to be illustrative of what MIGHT have been a resource bottleneck but for the development of other sources.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some kind of governmental shenanigans in that case, those kind of things can get highly politicized, but I don’t think the government happens to have the cure for cancer and diabetes and just is refusing to give it out to make a buck. That sounds more like a conspiracy theory, I would need considerable documentation confirming that to believe they have, and are withholding, the cure. After all, they could use the cure and still make a lot of money if they had it, and given how things work it probably would have leaked, or someone in another country would have found the same cure by now. The real reason the “global warming” scare has held on so long is that the mainstream media has kept it alive, partly because they were and are duped, but to a large extent because it feeds ratings. If they broke a story like the one your described that would spike ratings more than one can imagine. The media is always good for stories that are fantastic and create hysteria.
Take a look at this post to learn the references.

Gore’s home uses more than 20 times the national average
Last night, Al Gore’s global-warming documentary, *An Inconvenient Truth, *collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.
Gore’s mansion, located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).
In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.
The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.
Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.
Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.
Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.
“As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk the walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use,” said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.
In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

And what about his SUV’s?

Al Gore’s SUV Left Running While He Lectures About Global Warming

For a man not unaccustomed to hypocrisy, given the carbon footprint of this home, this should not be surprising. But, one would think that he could at least turn off the AC.

According to National Post, while Al Gore lectured the unwashed masses about abandoning fossil fuels, his
Code:
two Lincoln Town Cars and a full-sized SUV that sat idling with the air conditioners blasting while the Gore party was inside.

It was 34 C in Washington. Al Gore can’t be expected to get into an overheated vehicle after he’s worked up a sweat telling others how to save the planet.*

And private jet?

By now, most conservatives have likely seen or heard about the video Fox News’s Sean Hannity aired on Sunday’s “Hannity’s America” wherein the Global Warmingist-in-Chief, soon-to-be-Dr. Al Gore, was seen getting off a private, fuel inefficient jet at San Francisco Airport before stepping into a non-hybrid, Lincoln Town Car. *

He obviously isn’t too concerning about what he says is going to literally be the end of the world. Another case of “Do what we say, not what we do!”

Fools, you are all fools…there was no hacker break in, there was no “leaked information” and this had nothing to do with disproving human impact on climate change. People CAN screw up a planet it’s as simple as that. I will not get in to a long drawn out argument on this and a citation war, I just had to let it be known how many of my fellow Catholics are fools to a much bigger conspiracy than they care to hear about, and I got news for you, although GOOD things like environmental action have been polluted by BAD people and entities it does not diminish it. It’s like scandal in the Church, the bad of a good, does NOT diminish the good of a good. AND with that I bid you good day, fools.
Some Greeter!?:whacky:

One of the really positive outcomes of climategate is that it has opened the door to a spate of columns, cartoons, and op ed pieces all taking shots at the science behind “global warming.” It hasn’t been all that long since fringe nutcakes were calling for Nuremburg style trials for deniers as part of a massive effort to stymie dissent, which is what the entire “the science is settled” and “there’s an overwhelming consensus” arguments have been all about. I doubt that they can get that genie back in the bottle and I also suspect (and hope) that dissent will now become more widespread and even more pointed.

I just saw on the news this evening that Phil Jones, the director of CRU has (or shortly will) resigned his position.

Sorry Professor, we can’t live up to your high standards, fools, fools, fools, remember reading in the Bible about that term, (fools) unless yours was meant to be taken lightly.

Or below. Comments are GREAT!! Too many to choose from!

It began with an anonymous Internet posting, and a link to a wonky set of e-mails and files. Stolen, apparently, from a research center in Britain, the files showed the leaders of climate-change science discussing flaws in their own data, and seemingly scheming to muzzle their critics. Now it has mushroomed into what is being called “Climate-gate,” a scandal that has done what many slide shows

It snowed here last night in the deep South.
Don’t need to convince me!😃

We’re just a few degrees above record lows in many parts of California here, including the area I live in.

Great article about how the media and some unscrupulous politicians [no names, please] took scientific data and used it utterly and totally out of context to advance a totalitarian agenda.

And of course, when the outcome of the models didn’t give them what they wanted, they began tweaking the models harder and harder until their fingers hurt and then finally just threw away the data and made up their own.

Anyway, Lindzen’s article is great [we need a new thread just about the prematurely nasty, coldy, snowy weather]. [the “y” in coldy might qualify it for a gerund status] [or not] [we need a consult with an English major] [not an army english major, but a literature english major] [whatever]

This article might get us back on track.

Just a humble question: How does one earn the title “Greeter” & address readers as “fools”?

This is the best lay person’s summary of the deception committed I’ve seen so far.

Understanding Climategate’s Hidden Decline.

Granted, it’s long, but it has lots of graphs and connects a lot of the dots.
But I defy anyone to compare the above chart – the one Jones wrote he had applied MNT to – to the unadulterated version above it, and tell me there’s been no deception committed. At least with MBH98, a sharp eye might recognize the ruse. Here — there is no indication given whatsoever that the graph represents an amalgam of proxy and measured temperatures. This, my friends, is fraud.

Ok I really donlt feel like going through that whole thing and figuring out what Watts misunderstood about the science got wrong or whatever.

But about the trick and decline thing that has been explained many times for anyone that has bothered to look. youtube.com/watch?v=7nnVQ2fROOg&feature=player_embedded The issue like the video said it whether or not tree rings are useful as proxy evidence and of course the term hide. which in my opinion being that this is an email we are talking about was likely just a slightly poor choice of words

And as for proxies supposely being so super important to AGW theory. realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2005/01/what-if-the-hockey-stick-were-wrong/

I don’t think the Holy Father is guilty of Gaia worship or accusing anyone of being sinful in doing what they must do in their lives… but that we need to work for the good of all
I don’t think the Pope has ever explicitly acepted htat climate change is man made.

Of course climate change - a constant given throughout history - is important. Of course we have to deal with it as best we can. However that is far from saying either that it is manmade or that it is controllable. its effects are manageable to an extent but it is not controllable or indeed manmade.

Actually, global warming is a LOT better than global cooling.

Crops grow better in warm weather than in cold weather.

In any case, global warming is only one degree per CENTURY. A lot of people have been given the idea that global warming is one degree per YEAR. Not so, not so.

And now with the revelations that the actual data has been thrown away [can you believe that!!!] because the actual data didn’t support the political desire to tax people based on increasing temperatures and increasing carbon dioxide. And when the actual data didn’t do the job, the scientists at East Anglia and else where FAKED DATA TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE THE TEMPERATURES WERE INCREASING.

Fake data.

RICO is the way to go.

How about the words from one who was within the IPCC

A must read:
My concerns go beyond the actions of Dr. Trenberth and his colleagues to how
he and other IPCC officials responded to my concerns. I did caution Dr.
Trenberth before the media event and provided him a summary of the current
understanding within the hurricane research community. I was disappointed
when the IPCC leadership dismissed my concerns when I brought up the
misrepresentation of climate science while invoking the authority of the
IPCC. Specifically, the IPCC leadership said that Dr. Trenberth was speaking
as an individual even though he was introduced in the press conference as an
IPCC lead author; I was told that that the media was exaggerating or
misrepresenting his words, even though the audio from the press conference
and interview tells a different story (available on the web directly); and
that Dr. Trenberth was accurately reflecting conclusions from the TAR, even
though it is quite clear that the TAR stated that there was no connection
between global warming and hurricane activity. The IPCC leadership saw
nothing to be concerned with in Dr. Trenberth’s unfounded pronouncements to
the media, despite his supposedly impartial important role that he must
undertake as a Lead Author on the upcoming AR4.
It is certainly true that “individual scientists can do what they wish in
their own rights”, as one of the folks in the IPCC leadership suggested.
Differing conclusions and robust debates are certainly crucial to progress
in climate science. However, this case is not an honest scientific
discussion conducted at a meeting of climate researchers. Instead, a
scientist with an important role in the IPCC represented himself as a Lead
Author for the IPCC has used that position to promulgate to the media and
general public his own opinion that the busy 2004 hurricane season was
caused by global warming, which is in direct opposition to research written
in the field and is counter to conclusions in the TAR. This becomes
problematic when I am then asked to provide the draft about observed
hurricane activity variations for the AR4 with, ironically, Dr. Trenberth as
the Lead Author for this chapter. Because of Dr. Trenberth’s pronouncements,
the IPCC process on our assessment of these crucial extreme events in our
climate system has been subverted and compromised, its neutrality lost.
While no one can “tell” scientists what to say or not say (nor am I
suggesting that), the IPCC did select Dr. Trenberth as a Lead Author and
entrusted to him to carry out this duty in a non-biased, neutral point of
view. When scientists hold press conferences and speak with the media, much
care is needed not to reflect poorly upon the IPCC. It is of more than
passing interest to note that Dr. Trenberth, while eager to share his views
on global warming and hurricanes with the media, declined to do so at the
Climate Variability and Change Conference in January where he made several
presentations. Perhaps he was concerned that such speculation—though
worthy in his mind of public pronouncements—would not stand up to the
scrutiny of fellow climate scientists.
I personally cannot in good faith continue to contribute to a process that I
view as both being motivated by pre-conceived agendas and being
scientifically unsound. As the IPCC leadership has seen no wrong in Dr.
Trenberth’s actions and have retained him as a Lead Author for the AR4, I
have decided to no longer participate in the IPCC AR4.
Sincerely,
Chris Landsea
