Sir, with all due respect, may I please have proof of your claim?

By stating that ghosts aren’t real you are kinda arguing the nonexistence of demons and other diabolical spirits. This in turn can lead one to believe that you do not believe in the existence of Satan, which may lead to the more extreme conclusion that you do not believe in God.

I am not saying that I believe this about you, I am just saying that you are treading on some very slick ice on a very steep slope.

May I ask if you have a history of mental illness or drug taking in the family?
This is something you would be wise to take up with your GP.
Good luck.
…spirits do stay on the earth if they have any unfinished business that they must take care of.
This is Eastern pagan thinking so far as I know (the old 40 days “toll house” belief).
May I please have proof of your claim?
i.e. a Magisterial teaching on the matter.

Mental Illness: I have some relatives (“great” aunts, uncles etc.) in Canada who are extreme leftist liberals, but that is the only mental illness that I am aware of in my family history. Also one of my younger siblings has a minor learning disorder, but there is nothing suggesting that it is genetic.

Drug use: I believe that my father used alot of marijuana in college. My uncle dealt marijuana in high school. There might have been other things but I’m not sure.

I would still get myself checked out by a GP.
Ochkam’s razor and all.

I have been told this by my grandmother who is one of the most devout Catholics I know. I have also been told that the bible says something along those lines.

Also there is probably some popular belief influences in there somewhere, but most likely not much as I have been taught to always be skeptical of widely excepted “facts” about anything that can be considered religious, that are coming from the secular world.

So you are going on uncritical hearsay?
Yet you demand better proof from others.
That seems rationally inconsistent, are you a teenager by any chance?

Sir, I am just going off of what I have been taught and I am open to corrections.

Until just know I thought what I have been taught was religiously correct.

I apologize for the inconsistency. Yes I am a teenager, cradle catholic but just recently confirmed.

Charles may I kindly advise you as a 60 year old cradle Catholic with Theology qualifications that erroneous or superstitious belief and practises are alive and well amongst uneducated Catholics, old or young, as such things are in any other belief system…be it Buddhism or Scientology.

The way forward is to develop “critical thinking” (which you know in theory but don’t actually put into practise) , test hearsay by going to the source, widen one’s experience of life and other groups, get an education in those areas and associate with wise and educated people of all types. They don’t always need to be nice people as St Catherine of Sienna used to say of her Confessors.

You do seem to be operating from a lot of assumptions and lack of knowledge both medical and spiritual. I seriously advise you to see a Catholic GP you trust re these concerns.

I understand.

I will admit that I do not know much about the subject at hand, as is why I made this thread.

I would probably know more about my families mental health but we have much more pressing medical problems, such as Sticklers Syndrome, and Pierre Robin Sequence. I will how ever look into the subject of mental health as I have learned (from you and other repliers) that it may be an important factor in this matter.

Would you prefer it to be IR, visible spectrum or something else?

I can easily set up some trail cams and maybe some standard video cameras throughout the house, and garage.

Will that prove either of our points? Possibly but most likely not.

In addition to the suggestions of obtaining and sprinkling holy water, I would also suggest instead of or in addition to OVERTLY Christian music, pray the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the St. Michael prayer; any and all prayers to the Holy Spirit while you’re working. Create a small place with a blessed crucifix, or statue - a type of home prayer altar - in your work space so that these spirits KNOW to Whom you belong, and that Jesus is invited into it.

And get a priest or a deacon over there ASAP to bless the entire house.

Ghosts with unfinished business would fit under the criteria for souls in Purgatory. It’s been widely believed by Catholics that souls in Purgatory often finish their time on earth, especially in places where they committed the sin. But they don’t whisper hostile words or anything like that I think…

But, of course, there are demons who pretend to be friendly but are actually diabolical.

Anyhow, best bet is to just talk to your priest and ask him to bless your house, along with the suggestions of previous posters.

I still think Ghostbusters can do an excellent job under the right circumstances.

I’ve considered making an altar and I Intend to do so once I get some more wood screws.

I plan on making a small on for at home and for the trv cvlt status (that’s a joke btw), one to put back in the woods were I go to play my flutes and, in a way, mediate. I plan on having the one for the woods be completely decked out, crucifix, statues, seal-able holy water font, metal candle fixtures, etc.

All of it- he can bless the altar, the room, the holy objects…all at once, when he comes over. My point is, don’t just go and buy some crucifixes and put them up without arranging for them to be blessed. I mean, putting them up without getting them blessed isn’t a sin; it’s just more powerful.

Understood.

For the smaller “bench top” one, if I cant find a small enough crucifix would a blessed rosary be a suitable substitute?
