From the toil of the sun?

well, the toil of the sun, or the sun’s toil, is to travel around the earth constantly, shedding its light, which is what John Paul II is probably most known for.

but about prophecies, there is also the prophecy that the Great Monarch must also come, from the Franks [a medieval expression for any western european]. this Great Monarch will meet the last Pope for a blessing and will fight during the tribulation, or final battle, which will conclude with miraculous things like The Miracle and ‘fire from the sky’ . the the enemies will be defeated and the end will come. phew.

Hello, I just came across this old thread from 2004 while JPII was still alive, discussing St. Malachy’s prophecies of the Popes. It was a very interesting read, especially in light of Pope Benedict’s recent resignation:

I just wanted to share and perhaps give the discussion on St. Malachy’s prophecies new life. I should note that St. Malachy’s prophecies are private revelation and therefore as faithful Catholics we are not bound to believe or disbelieve them.

Okay, in all seriousness, it’s beyond odd that the next pope (who will be the last one per the book if I recall correctly), according to the “prophesy”, will lead the Church amidst intense tribulation and her last persecution, which describes fairly accurately what we are beholding these days. It will get nastier but it’s pretty intense at the time being. How could anyone have foreseen our troubled times several centuries ago?

So toil means eclipse? I don’t think so. This is precisely the kind of stretch I mean. I would think an eclipse would be more like taking time off for the sun.

I just looked this up. John Paul II died on April 2, 2005. The closest eclipse was only a hybrid on April 8 and was confined to the Southern hemisphere.

So can we drop this prophecy stuff.

I think the whole Malachy prophecies is a hoax and a forgery has a lot more explaining to do. While it is curious it took 400 years for it to surface, that in and of itself means nothing. We are talking about the middle ages for crying out loud.

I think the people who are most vocerifous about this are the ones who are most likely to trash any apoclyptic prophecy even though last time I checked the apoclypse is part of public revelation and must be believed.

While there are no doubt people who will dismiss almost any apocalyptic talk (myself included - I’ve seen too many “the sky is falling” claims even in my short life), its worth pointing out that the opposite is true: many of those talking up this stuff are those who seem all too eager for the apocalypse…not just that they think it is quickly approaching, but that they hope it is.

I predict that in 200 years from now, we will live in troubled times.

I predict that in 300 years from now, we will live in troubled times.

And I will be right.

It’s not difficult to predict. Every age has its trials. As we are personally experiencing our own tribulations, I think it’s easy for us to think that our present trials are somehow uniquely worse than all other time periods. Certainly some times are better or worse than others, but there will always be troubles. That’s just fallen human nature at work.

I am of the “older” generation and I have lived thru many direr predictions, some that even scared the heck out of me, at the time, such as the 3 days of darkness and all its crazy claims. I was much younger then. But I hear the thing is coming back.

After talking to my Uncle who was a priest, (of Happy Memory), He told me to pray instead for the spiritual darkness that is coming over mankind. That was in the early 70’s. He even told me that trouble would come from the Middle East! Looking back I wonder if he knew something we didn’t. I wish now I would have questioned him more on what he meant, but would you believe I was sooo uninformed I didn’t even know what he meant by “Middle East”. And I didn’t want him to know I didn’t know! He passed away in 1979 so I learned soon enough afterwards what he meant. He said we have to learn to trust God and pray!!! And to teach our children the true Faith. Divine Mercy tells us the same thing. We have work to do folks so please let us get on with it and not let these things drag us down. Ask Fr. Pacwa, He’ll explain it. but I don’t think we have to believe every dire prediction that comes down the pike. And there have been many!. Jesus I trust in Thee!.

It also applies generically to the office of Pope, as the successors of Peter of Rome (even when they were in France). Therefore, it can be applied to all future popes as a whole.

You’re right, though. As soon as the successor to Benedict’s successor is elected, believers in these prophesies can simply say that “Peter the Roman” refered to all future popes en masse. It’s nice when you can’t possibly be wrong.

The good news about that is that after the next few popes, there won’t be any point in following the “Malachy prophesies” any more and this nonsense will die out.

Hopefully, it should be less of a problem than Y2K or the Mayan calendar.

I suspect many Christians thought it was the end during WWII. Millions died, including six-million Jews slaughtered just for being Jews. The world was fractured and death was basically known to the entire world. During that war, something like a billion people served in one way or another (across the world), with 64 nations involved, and deaths happening at horrifying rate. All told, more than 70,000, 000 died, from a total world population of 2.3-billion–more than 30%of the total world population at that time.

Yet, WWII was not the end–here we are.

ahem, except the mayan calendar of a new cycle beginning at the end of 2012 coincides with malachy’s prophecy of the last pope before the end, he being now elected in mid-march 2013.
