Male Circumcision: Should Catholic parents get their sons circumcised?

We chose not to have our sons circumcised. They are 8 and 4 and have never had an infection or any complications from being left intact.

I find it fascinating that most people in the US are horrified at the thought of female circumcisions that are practiced in many nations around the world, but don’t give a second-thought to routine infant circumcision for males here in the US. I really don’t see much of a difference…

But there is quite a difference. In some cases of female circumcision, the woman cannot even urinate properly. Some examples are given in Ayaan Hirsi’s book Infidel.

True. Male circumcision carries risks, as well Although complications are rare, they can be *very *serious.
 
If my parents circumcised me, when I grew up, I’d be angry with them for interfering in my body before I had a chance to air my views about such a critical matter. With good hygiene habits from a young age, there is no need, in my opinion for such surgery. It also deprives the child of a right to decide its own fate. Just my tuppence worth.

I’m not sure why this issue raises so much concern. I’m guessing that most men are happy they way they are–i.e. if they were circumcised as infants, they’re fine with it, if not, they’re fine with that as well. I haven’t seen any polling data from men about the matter, and most of the heat seems to come from women!
 
Two millenia of Christianity and we still have the remnants of the absurd notion that this primeval practice hasany moral virtue. Utterly bizarre.

The gospel was filtered through Greek thought because that is what God wanted. Greek thought rightly and properly regarded the practice as ridiculous superstition based on the coincicence that desert snakes shedding skin seemed to be reborn. The Greeks filtered it out of Christianity since God wanted that to happen.

Stop mutilating children.
 
There are pros and cons, and the exact risks vary a great deal from one guy to the next. It isn’t a religious issue, except that it should not be made into a religious issue: “For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.” Gal 5:6

Our boys were circumcised. Their father, who is circumcised himself, is an physician who has seen a lot of uncircumcised males–primarily younger boys who wanted to look like a circumcised friend and drunken or otherwise impaired older men–present in a great deal of pain because they retracted their foreskin and didn’t put it back. The procedure required to relieve the swelling is not enjoyable. Also, fungal infections are not rare, and he does not practice in a 3rd world country. I know a man in his 80s who constantly has this problem…something an 80-year-old man can do without, trust me. Anyway, one of our kids turned out to have a urinary issue that made the circumcision a net plus. Who knew?
 
I was circumcised as an infant. I couldn’t care less that my parents did it without my permission. I don’t feel “mutilated” either. I also don’t see why pain is an issue because you aren’t even self-aware if it’s done at a very young age.
 
I got circumcised as a baby, and I certainly don’t remember how painful it was or wasn’t. I’m having any future son circumcised (have 2 daughters and one unidentified gender on the way). Not really an issue for me. People need to remember that pain is not immoral. The reason or cause certainly can be. But just because something hurts, that doesn’t mean we need to avoid it. Live birth hurts, that doesn’t mean it should be avoided. However, it’s your decision to have it done or not have it done. Just make sure that in your decision you don’t try to force others to believe as you do, as the Church has left it up to parents to decide.

I’m not sure how this isn’t heresy…How is it ridiculous superstition if God told them to do it? How is Greek thought better than God’s word? Is God’s word so poor that it needs Greek thought to make it perfect?
 
I find it ironic that in a group of christians so often concerned with pain suffered by a fetus some care very little for the pain endured by a recently born baby.

It’s not that we don’t care. I will do it because I feel it is right to do so. And there’s a huge difference between circumcision and abortion (which is ultimately what your analogy leads to). There are positive health reasons to do so. Would you have your child receive immunizations via shots (some even bruise and burn for days)? Those hurt, but they have positive results.

I find it ironic that many non-christians will willingly murder an unborn child yet oppose the death penalty for rapists and murderers.

I don’t see how the unborn child could be aware of pain, despite whether he responds to pain stimuli, which apparently he does. But that’s not why I consider abortion immoral. It’s wrong because it’s the deliberate murdering of an innocent human life.

The fact is, no one remembers pain before 1 years old. I personally don’t remember anything before 3 years, and certainly nothing of my circumcision.

There is a difference between killing an pain. Shots cause pain, but do not kill, should we not get children immunizaitons? Or sports, God forbid they get hurt. But niether of these kill a child, abortion does.

It significantly reduces the sensation for older men because the head which is so sensitive is constantly rubbing against something. The skin that’s supposed to be soft and moist now becomes hardened and dry. Without getting into further detail, there are a lot of men out there who really regret and are pained that their parents circumcised them because they don’t get to experience the full sensation. The foreskin is full of nerve endings and it is the most sensitive part of the male organ.

Also, there is a reason for the foreskin. It’s to protect a sensitive area. God put it there for a reason, why should you remove it?

You should research circumcision leading to impotence and a host of other sexual problems for men.

This really is a pathetically poor effort Charlie. You need to up your game. Get a basic philosophy primer and look up what false analogy means. Then when trying to troll websites put your mind to avoiding blatant logical fallacies like a good chap.

It might be heretical for a Jew. Luckily Greek christians realised that Jewish practices picked up by apeing pagan Egyptians - let’s be honest that is what happened - was not necessary to Christianity. The Church agreed. Christ fulfilled the law. he wasnot a slave to it.

Agreed, I’m circumcised, and one of the things that makes me feel better is that a friend of mine who was circumcised at the age of 15 says that while there was a difference, it wasn’t that great.

It pains me that my parents did this in ignorance to me. Now, I’m lucky, as like most circumcised, males, I’ll able to function normally. However, I have seen pictures where guys have had parts of their glans attached to the shaft, their glans contiguous with their shaft, and other bad things. It’s not good.

There’s no reason for it. God wanted a really personal way to establish his covenant with Abraham. That’s fine. He himself consented to this as an infant (Yay! My penis looks like God’s!). Better to lose your foreskin than your soul.

However, now that we don’t have to circumcise, there’s no reason to do it. God made your foreskin for a reason. For Abraham, it was so that he could cut it off. For everyone now, it’s to lubricate and protect your glans as well as provide sexual pleasure. Leave it be!

If your male sons want to get rid of it, well, let them make their own choice. The off chance that they’ll develop something from being uncircumcised is so low it’s not worth it.
 
Absolutely not! Circumcision is pain! The baby loses the inner child and is replaced with a pig! Catholics want to nourish the inner child not give it to Judaism.

Check it out with your kid’s doctor; don’t take the word of someone posting on the internet.
