I want to make sure I understand the article. While not changing the teachings of the church that sex outside of marriage is sinful. And those people guilty of sex outside of marriage are committing a sin, we should allow them to participate in all areas of the faith, because God’s mercy?

If it sounds like it makes no sense, it’s because it doesn’t. Repentance is still a requirement of a Catholic life.

Change the words remarried to “serial adulterer” and see how much sympathy there is then,

He says, “in no way putting at risk the teaching about the indissolubility of marriage,” but if he is supportive of Communion for the divorced and remarried, what about what Fr Robert Dodaro said in an interview, not quoted perfectly:
If people are told divorced and civilly remarried Catholics will be admitted to Holy Communion then this is how its going to play out; a young couple will go to their Parish Priest and say well we want to be married. ‘Well that’s great, we have to do some marriage preparation but that’s great.’ And he gets somebody in his Parish to organise something, and they are to told during this, very sincerely they are told, now remember, marriage is permanent ant, it’s forever, it’s till death do we part, and you have to mean those words. You can never… Marriage will be tough, you’ll have difficulties, you’ll have struggles, but you never divorce because your marriage takes place in Christ, your bond is in Christ, so you can’t ever renounce it, you can’t ever leave behind and marry another person. Alright, the couple are stunned by this, they listen carefully, ‘Yes Father, yes Father.’ On the way home the young man says to his girlfriend, ‘my parents are divorced and remarried and receive Communion, what’s the big deal?’ The indissoubility of marriage is over.

How can opening Communion for the divorced and remarried not make us look at divorce and remarriage differently? It can change the outlook on the value of permanence in marriage.

As we should for all people; we are all sinners. But there is canon law and church doctrine. This is a serious issue and must be adjudicated at the highest level in the Church. Perhaps there will be a Synod called by Pope Francis. Until then, we follow the Holy See.
