Where does the idea that bags are for women come from?
Probably the same place as the idea that women are frivolous, materialistic, and vain, and carry silly, unnecessary stuff with them, such as lipstick, make up, extra shoes, a mirror, ummm, whatever? While men are practical and down-to-earth?

I can’t believe this thread exists! I only noticed it because it grew incredibly long for what I’d assumed was a practical question (asking for recommendations or whatever).

I’m European, so I guess you can write my shock off easily.

Most of these bags look like practical, normal carriers either sex could carry stuff in when they have stuff to carry. 🤷

I personally hate typically ā€˜girly’ purses - they fall off. I prefer bags such as these, because you can put them over the other shoulder and they stay in place. If I can get away with it, I put all I need in my jacket pockets. If I leave the house for a long time and need to take a water bottle, some food, a book, etc., I carry something resembling these ā€˜man bags’.

Btw, the phrase is silly. There are bags. Some are more geared towards women, others towards men. My language does not have different names for them.

I just don’t get it, sorry.

I see men carrying bags ALL THE TIME! what is the big deal?? why is this even a conversation??🤷 A bad is a bag is a bag. Good gravy, carry one if you need one!!🤷

I see women wearing shoes ALL THE TIME! what is the big deal?? why is this even a conversation??🤷 A shoe is a shoe is a shoe. Good gravy, wear two if you need two!!🤷

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

I must be having a dumb day… I don’t understand what’s funny 🤷

Yes, both men and women wear bags… and shoes… and T-shirts… and jackets… What’s the joke? :o

I have been carrying a STM Drifter (a discontinued smaller version of the current Drifter) for years. In it is my wallet, some change, a swiss army knife, car and house and office keys, a Photon LED mini light, my iPod Nano, my iPhone, earbuds, diabetic testing stuff, some prescription meds, a pen, some file cards, and sometimes my Kindle or a book. During the flu season, I add some hand sanitizer. I simply could not get by without my manbag. I have a larger one from L.L. Bean which has outside pockets for water bottles. For dressy occasions, I have a leather manbag I bought in Paris about ten years ago. I am considering getting a Tom Bihn cafe bag (a much better name than manbag or purse). I don’t see how anyone can get along without some sort of satchel.

Jack Bauer (of 24) carrys a messenger bag when he is one his own time. If it is good enough for Jack, it is good enough for me.

I bet she thinks my bag would go better with a skirt and high heels.

The real question is: WHAT IS IN YOUR BAG 😃

Gosh. I went through that before.

Wallet, keys, checkbook, flashlight, calculator, tissues, eye drops, compass, notepad, pens, etc., etc.

Why do you ask?

#1–I suppose I like it. After all, if this guy was girly in any way, he wouldn’t be wearing a brown purse with a black jacket.

#2–Actually, I think the purse is the manliest thing he’s wearing.

#3–Maybe, if he gets paid by Microsoft for being a walking billboard.

My husband is completely secure in his manliness and is happy to carry my purse around (which, incidentally, matches his jacket quite well). . .However, when he saw Flo’s discomfiture over the ā€œEuropean shoulder bag,ā€ he asked me if I would please NEVER buy him such a gift.

The top two are smaller versions of the bookbag I carried to school from grades 1-9. That, of course, was at a time when backpacks were still camping equipment.

Because your bag is big enough to fit more cool stuff 😃
