OKLAHOMA CITY - An Oklahoma man told federal investigators he forgot a pipe bomb he built for fun was in his luggage when tried to board an airplane, according to court documents released Thursday.

Charles Alfred Dreyling Jr., 24, was charged Thursday with trying to carry the bomb aboard a Delta Airlines flight from Oklahoma City to Atlanta on Wednesday, according to the documents.

Dreyling was released Thursday on $10,000 bail. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

FBI agents and Oklahoma City police officers said the pipe bomb contained a metal cartridge filled with gunpowder attached to a detonator made from model rocket parts, according to an affidavit filed by the FBI.

Dreyling, a student at the University of Oklahoma, could have detonated the bomb using his cell phone battery, according to the affidavit.

Dreyling told investigators he made bombs for recreation and had recently set off several devices with friends in rural Oklahoma, according to the affidavit.

and if anybody believes that story, I’ve got a 93 Chevy I’ll sell you for $20,000. And they released him on bail. He’ll probably never be seen again.

Is it because he is a “white male” and does not fit the typical terrorist criteria? • [Print this page](javascript:void(0)😉 http://media.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/photo/2005/08/11/PH2005081102256.jpgIn this photo provided by the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s department, Charles Alfred Dreyling Jr., 24, is pictured. An explosive device was found in a passenger’s carryon bag as the man passed through a checkpoint, and federal agents arrested him, the FBI said Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005. Officials have found no apparent connection between Charles Alfred Dreyling Jr. and any terrorist group or activity, said Agent Gary Johnson, an FBI spokesman. Dreyling, 24, was going through the security checkpoint at Will Rogers World Airport on Wednesday when a Transportation Security Administration employee noticed something suspicious in his bag on the X-ray machine, Johnson said. Heck even child molesters and murderers can and do get bail.

Watch out for ACLU

Why does the expression DUMB come to mind? And this was a university type? The worlds going to pot in a handbag at this rate!!!

Poor guy…didnt he get the memo that knives and razor blades are now allowed? 😉

It’s just my opinion, but I think there is something seriously twisted about building pipe bombs “for fun”.

A Scenario,

A guy boards a plane with a reinforced cockpit that is locked and bullet proof. He stands up and screams I HAVE A BOX CUTTER AND I AM HIGHJACKING THIS PLANE!!!

He then gets beaten about the head and shoulders by 40 passengers. The pilot comes on the air and says "Thank You for subduing that man ladies and gentlemen we will be making an emergency landing to drop this guy off with the authorities.

Can you honestly say it would happen any other way?

-D

does not say much for the recruiting standards at U of OK and no, I will not repeat any of those demeaning remarks Texans make about Okies.

It’s not just your opinion, its mine too!
There is nothing  “fun” about building bombs. I hope they throw the book at him! If this is his idea of a  hobby, what is he going to do when he gets bored with it??

Building pipe bombs as a hobby is weird, but not illegal. I would be worried what these people plan to do with all the pipe bombs that they build. Furthermore, to forget a pipe bomb in a suitcase isn’t at all believable. It isn’t a toothbrush or nail clipper.

This reminds me of a meeting of government people I once went to–this was before 9/11. But the federal building in which we were meeting nevertheless had metal detectors for visitors to walk through.

One of the visitors, a high-ranking federal manager from another part of the country came directly from the airport to the federal bldg. He kept setting off the metal detectors when he ran his luggage through. Finally, they went through his luggage and discovered a 4-ft jungle knife.

“Why would you bring a huge knife with you to a government meeting??” everyone asked him. “Well, he said, it’s my favorite knife. I take it everywhere.”

All right guys, I actually know this kid.Well…my stepbrother does and has told me about him. Hes a good student at OU. Even the former mayor of OKC stood up for him because his family has close ties to the kids family. He is not a bad kid, despite having a weird hobby. Remember this is OKLAHOMA. Its not too odd for people to blow things up for fun. Whether or not he accidentally left it in there, or was planning on detonating it when he arrived somewhere could be the next topic of discussion…he made a stupid mistake lets not tear him apart. We have excellent standards of recruiting by the way, I am rather offended at some remarks here. We have the highest enrollment of National Merit Scholars of any state school. So don’t make this a chance to knock on Oklahoma or OU. I love this school, not for the football like most Okies…but for the academics and the wonderful professors. ( by the way, it was basically just an oversized homemade firecracker so its not TOO weird)

Well, happens. I once forgot I had a primed alarm clock in my luggagge and the alarm went off just as I was checking it in. :o

So how hard is it to get a major in explosive devices? (Not that there’s anything wrong with that. . . )

I remember well, with fond memories, of building “fireworks” in cans and toilet paper cores using homemade black powder when we were kids. The tricky thing was making a fuse so we had time to get away from the blast. Of course we were a lot younger than this guy. We had almost, but not quite, outgrown explosives by the time we were getting our drivers liscenses.

Wow, you were lucky not to lose a hand or an eye. I’m sure my son would love to blow stuff up as well, but no way would I let him. Well, I was riding my bike all over town in second grade and going to the swimming pool on my own with friends at that age as well. Nobody where I live now would allow kids that age to do it.
