Man screams abuse at Pope Benedict XVI.

THE Pope was verbally abused as he gave his weekly address in St Peter’s Square yesterday.

A man, apparently in his early 50s, shouted “bulls***, bulls***” while stretching an accusatory arm towards Benedict XVI, after approaching the barrier in front of the Pope’s podium.

Vatican police forcibly removed the man, still shouting, from the square.

The Pope went on to announce that he would “soon” send a pastoral letter to Irish Catholics over the paedophile priest scandal that has rocked Ireland.

The address was the first of the year to be held in St Peter’s Square, which was bathed in early spring sunshine.

Security for the 82-year-old Pope was tightened after a woman knocked him to the ground at midnight mass on Christmas Eve.

However, Vatican authorities said it would be impossible to entirely protect the Pope without putting a wall between him and the masses who come to see him.

Wow. People seriously need to learn to have some respect for those in superior positions to them and for those in positions of authority over them. In my opinion, this man who decided to rudely interrupt Pope Benedict’s weekly address deserves to be punished somehow. His utter disrespect for the Pope is disgusting in my opinion. I trust that the appropriate authorities took the appropriate action.

That said, I think we should all pray for the Pope’s safety as so many people seem to be vehemently opposed to him. :signofcross:

Last I checked, the Pope has no authority over non-Catholics and as far as being in a superior position, again…to a non-Catholic, the Pope is just an ordinary guy.

Wouldn’t you rather see the man rehabilitated?
What ever happened to turning the other cheek?
What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Instead, all I read is PUNISHMENT. 😦
I trust that the appropriate authorities took the appropriate action.
Such as?

The Pope is the head of a State. He is no “ordinary guy”.If the same thing was done to The Queen or the President you can be sure he would be removed, assessed and punished,i.e. fined or given a letter of tresspass and would henceforth forevermore be on someones “watch list”.

The woman who ATTACKED the Pope at Christmas was forgiven by him although he could have pressed charges.

You’re talking through your hat:rolleyes:

I was not aware that the man shouting at the Pope was a non-Catholic. I did not have time to read the entire article and don’t have the time now to read it. If you could please kindly quote the section of the article that states that the man who shouted at the Pope was indeed a non-Catholic, I will accept your point as correct. I apologize for not having read the entire article but as I said, I simply do not have the time to do so.

That said, the Pope is a head of state. Therefore, he deserves to at least be treated with the same kind of respect as any other head of state would get.
Wouldn’t you rather see the man rehabilitated?
I would like to see the man rehabilitated, yes. However, I put in what I was thinking at the moment and what I was thinking at the moment was that this man who shouted at the Pope was some sort of rebellious Catholic. Regardless, you are right in that rehabilitation is needed. I still believe, though, that punishment or discipline of some kind is also necessary in a case such as this.
What ever happened to turning the other cheek?
I am not sure what your point is but here is what the Catholic Biblical commentary, the Haydock Commentary, has to say about Matthew 5:39 which is the verse that you are referring to.
Haydock Commentary:
Mat 5:39 Not to resist evil;[6] i.e. not to resist or revenge thyself of him that hath done evil to thee. — Turn him the other cheek. Let him have also thy cloak. These are to be understood as admonitions to Christians, to forgive every one, and to bear patiently all manner of private injuries. But we must not from hence conclude it unlawful for any one to have recourse to the laws, when a man is injured, and cannot have justice by any other means. (Witham) — what is here commanded, is a Christian patience under injuries and affronts, and to be willing even to suffer still more, rather than to indulge the desire of revenge; but what is further added does not strictly oblige according to the letter, for neither did Christ, nor St. Paul, turn the other cheek. (St. John xviii. and Acts xxiii.) (Challoner) — Hence also the Anabaptists infer, that it is not lawful to go to law even for our just rights; and Luther, that Christians ought not to resist the Turks. (Bristow)
What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty?
I imagine that there were many thousands of witnesses to what this man did. There is more than likely no need to prove this man’s innocence. In all likelihood, his guilt has already been determined. That said, I do not and cannot know for sure whether that is true or not but I seriously doubt that the Vatican police would have acted prematurely. As I said before, I trust that what the Vatican’s police have done is perfectly fine.

We already know that the man was forcibly removed from the crowd and this is perfectly justified because of the fact that this man may have had a malicious intent and may have intended violence against the Pope. That said, I do not know if he did or not but it is always possible. The point is that the safety of the Pope could have been assumed to have been in immediate danger and therefore the appropriate action was taken in order to protect him.
Instead, all I read is PUNISHMENT. 😦
Perhaps I should have used the term “discipline” instead. I readily admit that when I read this, I read it all the while assuming that this man was either a rebellious Catholic or an anti-Catholic of some sort that simply wanted to cause trouble. Perhaps I should not have assumed such. I apologize if my assumptions have caused you any grief.
Such as removing the man from the crowd forcibly and then conducting a preliminary investigation to determine whether or not there was any malicious intent involved and then took appropriate action to prevent any further occurrences of this happening in the future.

Finally, I apologize for any misunderstanding or wrong assumptions that I have made or any other offense that I may have caused you unjustly. As I said earlier, I do not have the time to read the entire article and I do not have the time to get heavily involved in this thread so I am out of here. If you still feel offended, I apologize. It was not my intent to offend. It was my intent to get my point across that the Pope’s safety must be protected first of all, secondly that the crowd’s safety must be protected, and finally that the intruder’s safety must be protected as well.

Anyway, may God bless you and may peace always be with you. I have to go now.

No where in that article is the man’s faith(or lack of)identified.I repeat my earlier assertion.

I was not aware that the man shouting at the Pope was a non-Catholic.
In fairness, I don’t know if he is or isn’t.

I agree, he’s a head of State…a tiny State, but a State all the same. Hecklers heckle, no matter who the speaker is, if a heckler shows up, that’s what they’re going to do…heckle.
I was thinking at the moment was that this man who shouted at the Pope was some sort of rebellious Catholic.
Perhaps he’s mentally ill, suffering from PTSD or a victim of abuse?

You don’t understand…the onus is on the state to prove his guilt, not on the accused to prove his innocence.

It’s private property, he was heckling and by heckling, he was causing a disturbance. Absolutely they should have removed him…no question. I agree with you 100%.

I also concede, that the Pope is an internationally protected person and therefor, security forces will / should move swiftly.
If you still feel offended, I apologize.
Not in the least and seriously, no need to apologize.

I sense a growing danger for our Holy Father. I hope and pray that his gaurdian Angel and his security are well on the task.

Respectfully, are you a lawyer?

I say the best thing we can do for the Pope is pray for him.
V. Let us pray for our Pontiff, Pope Benedict.
R. May the Lord preserve him, and give him life, and bless him upon earth, and deliver him not to the will of his enemies.(Ps40:3)
Code:
Our Father. Hail Mary.
Code:
Let us pray.
Code:
O God, Shepherd and Ruler of all Thy faithful people, look mercifully upon Thy servant Benedict, whom Thou hast chosen as shepherd to preside over Thy Church. Grant him, we beseech Thee, that by his word and example, he may edify those over whom he hath charge, so that together with the flock committed to him, may he attain everlasting life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
We should also pray for the man who shouted at him, but as I don’t know why he was shouting it would be imprudent to suggest a specific prayer for him, rather let each of us decide on that prayer ourselves.

We’ve already had one attempted assassination on one Pope in St Peter’s square,we don’t need another, although I have a horrible feeling that Benedict will be martyred.I’m not so concerned about the rights of this lunatic, grandstander, incredibly cheeky fellow(take your pick)as I am with the safety and dignity of the Holy Father.I’m tempted to use the word Pharaisical but I won’t.

I agree. I am also far more concerned with the safety of the Holy Father than I am with the with the rights of this criminal. The Holy Father has a far more important job to do than does this person who chose to be completely disrespectful of the Holy Father. The Holy Father has to lead Christ’s Church! This criminal almost certainly, if not definitely, has a far less important job.

That said all people have equal rights but some people need more protection than others and generally it is those in a position of authority who need more protection.

What crime has he been charged with?
You’re just being arguementative because you’ve been bested in debate. If you’re so concerned with this miscreant why don’t you email the Vatican, the Swiss Guard or the Polezei?

Is someone only guilty after they have been convicted or have they been guilty all along?
While Holly3278 is getting angry, her anger stems from a legitimate news report. The information presented in this news report allows us to draw a conclusion based on the facts provided, namely:
  1. Pope Benedict was giving a general Audience
  2. An unidentified man began shouting at the Holy Father
  3. This man was removed by security, just as you or I would want done if such a man was shouting outside our house.
Or are you denying the man was shouting at the Pope or are you saying this shouting was acceptable?

First he’s called a criminal and now he’s called a miscreant?

Where’s the compassion? What would Jesus have called him?

Is someone only guilty after they have been convicted or have they been guilty all along?
A person is guilty once their guilt has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Their guilt isn’t determined on the internet.

The man was called a criminal. I asked, with what crime has this man been accused? How can a man be called a criminal, if they haven’t been accused of having committed a criminal offence?
Or are you denying the man was shouting at the Pope or are you saying this shouting was acceptable?
I deny neither. In the entire Western world, a man is innocent until proven guilty.

To me this man is just some anti Catholic taking advantage of the situation of the Church to show his bigotry and disrespect.

we should just let it go. this is a time that Catholics must exercise their forgiveness to all who hates us.

lets just worry about praying for the Church. she will rise again just like before.

soon her enemies will be gone and she will stand again and again and again for the Glory of her Master.

I agree 100%. 🙂

My point in creating the OP is that I have a great concern for our Holy Father. I pray and hope he is lept safe. I fear much hate is aimed his way.
