My grandfather was a farmer in Kansas and they use to have coyote hunts when the coyote population got out of control because, of course, they would attack poultry and livestock.
 
Where I grew up we had a surplus of ground squirrels (prairie dogs), legal to hunt all year with no limit.

However unlike wild hogs, prairie dogs don’t actually harm the environment, it’s a myth. They are prolific though…

They can carry the plague though.

That may be true, as much as any animal. Research I saw indicated the colonies don’t actually harm livestock yields and they aerate the soil, which helps with the grass.

I can see they would be a problem for horses though.

Yes that too.

We also have gophers in our area which really can destroy your yard.

And we have lots of prairie dog colonies.
