And if they refuse and or it doesn’t work?
we all have free will, if they make that choice it is theirs to make. we arent obliged to continue paying for their illegal habits. especially when that means the money they get doesnt go to someone who truly needs it. and if they can afford drugs they dont need welfare, someone wanting to pay for food and shelter does.

I don’t think it diminishes the “value” of the welfare recipient. What it DOES do is prevent the money from enabling the drug addict. A lot of drug addicts want to kick their habits. But, because of the lifestyle they are now stuck in it is a difficult matter for them to stop. Peer pressure and lack of real motivation being just two. For some addicts it isn’t just a matter of going cold turkey. They need and often want help but either can’t or won’t seek it out for whatever reason.

This is not to imply that all welfare recipients are drug addicts. However, demographically the majority of young recipients are a substance abuser in one fashion or another.

i didnt say it was a job. that was a metaphor to show the similarties between drug testing welfare recipents and other acceptable drug testing situations.

i never said they hadnt ever paid taxes or ment to imply that most werent worth it. however someone on welfare actively taking illegal drugs is worth their human diginity and all but that doesnt mean we have to keep enabling their habit.

i still see no constitional problem as it is a voluntary program. dont like the test dont take the check.

i’d have no problem with drug testing for social security. however im 26 do you really think i will ever see 1 penny of the money i put into that back?
You did say it was a job.
welfare is basically a job, in exchange for the form filing and being law abiding(people in jail cant collect it) the boss(government) gives out a check.
Since welfare is not a job, but, and i can’t believe I’m saying this again, a PUBLIC SERVICE, available to ANYONE, then there is no drug testing involved, nor should there ever be. You talk about it being a “voluntary program”, and that is not what it is in any way shape or form. In some instances, it’s the line between living, and living on the streets. What you are proposing by saying welfare recipients should be drug tested isn’t by any means a way to keep from “enabling drug users”, it’s not even about drug users at all. It’s about violating the rights and bodies of those who DON’T use drugs, in order to kick those that DO use drugs out of a service that they are entitled to.

As for you seeing a penny of the tax money you put into social security, do you plan on living past 60? And in regards to seeing the money you put into welfare, like you said, you’re 26! anything could happen between now and then! You can’t say you’ll never be in need of welfare.

But by all means, give up the 4th amendment, but while you’re at it, give up the 2nd amendment, and the fifth amendment, and yknow, that first amendment always bugged me, let’s throw it out too. Anyone willing to give up one of his rights deserves none.

For some people, the cycle of poverty, teen pregnancy, and drug use is almost impossible to overcome.

But, for those that want to , I don’t think it’s an unreasonable search to say that if you want welfare, you have to have drug tests. You can decide to forgo the welfare payments.

That said, it’s bad public policy to refuse to help the ones who need it most.

So if someone on welfare is using drugs we should remove the welfare and let them starve to death? Not in my country.
I didn’t say that in any way. I don’t think its welfare’s job to find out who’s doing drugs or not in the first place, remember?

personally i a, a bit soprised at how close the poll is(9:9:1 right now). i wasnt sure which way but i really thought it would be slanted to one side or the other.

There would be an extra vote for “No”, but it won’t let me vote.
BOOOOOOO!!!
😛

I think we should drug test everybody on this thread!😛
(just a joke,people!)

This actually reminds me of a story i heard about in the paper, where a 93 year old man froze to death in his home, because he owed the electric company $1000, so they limited how much electricity he could use. His neighbors found him underneath a large jacket, and four layers of clothes. Oddly enough, there wasa money clip on top of several bills to paid. It was obviously a sad case of dementia, and a horrid electric company, who i truly hope will be investigated by police, that was truly disgusting to me.

I think welfare is not good either. IT should only be used to get people back on their feet. and if the people are not showing any signs of getting back on their feet, then take it away and give it to some one who can use it right. The Jews int he bibles days worked 6 days a week and from dawn till dusk. we as Americans have grown lazy and lost that desire to work. God created man, to do work. whether for him, for the earth, or for each other. God told Adam, now your going to work and it will be toil, when Adam fell that means that work was joyful and good before the fall of man. So i say if some one is on welfare, and they show no signs of improvement, take it away, and go ahead and drug test them, you are willingly subjecting your life to the government for support, they get to do what they want.

And if they starve to death so be it?

according to the bible, if man does not work, he does not eat. I would not let them starve to death, but i would not be very understanding. You work, you eat, you dont work, you dont eat.

And who said one needs to be compassionate to be christian?

Assuming this is an able bodied person, of course. Right? You’re not talking about individuals who are unable for one reason or another, I hope.

So if someone starves tio death becuase they either cant or wont give up their addiction that is OK

Doesn’t sound very ‘HOSPITABLE’ to me dauchsundknight.

I dont know if any of you have been on welfare, but my family has. My mother before she died, was a missionary for an organization called CEF. it a collection of people who try very hard to take the gospel to Children. Especially underprivileged and city kids. My mother lost all of her support from a church because of the Hypocrisy and actions of another in that church. (If you have not figured out i am protestant, at least until Easter.) So we had to apply to welfare. Now already technically my mother did not have a “Job” because the Government does not recognize missionary as a job. we were a shoe in. So we went to the welfare office to get our first check and that office was filled with mostly Fat white and black, lazy people( not being racist just telling it how it is. also not stating that is how it is all over the USA.) and these people would yell and scream to get their way in this office. there were people with Genuine need in that office and they got their help, but unfortunately those people received the stereo-type of fat and lazy, because they were in that office. Being on Welfare, is humiliating, and down right degrading and people take advantage of that system all the time.

Now of course if some one can not work for some reason, Injury or a disease, then of course not, don’t take it away, help them, the bible says stand up for those who can not stand up for themselves. in 6 months my mother got her support back we left Welfare and in those 6 months we kept seeing the same people kicking and screaming wanting their way and unwilling to change and stand on their own two feet out of simple laziness. some however we stopped seeing, dont know what happened to them, but they stopped coming.

So i am saying take it from the people who are unwilling to change and unwilling to stand on their own feet, out of shear laziness and give it to the people who truly need it. Now if that sounds not compassionate i hope you realize that is what Jesus said to do. With the Parable of the Ruler and the servants. he gave some servants talents and they were expect to do thing with it, Better the rulers kingdom, better themselves and better the talents. one servant however did nothing with it and buried it. he later had the talent taken away was cast into outer darkness where there is weeping and Gnashing of teeth.

I feel that there should be mandatory drug testing for all Welfare recipients. That would include me. I know I would pass the tests.
