So our Parish appears to be following the trend towards “mandatory” catechism classes for children prior to receiving the sacraments.
Our bulletin today stated that children who will be receiving First Holy Communion will need to attend weekly catechism classes every Sunday (except summer) for two years prior to receiving the sacrament.
There are a lot of homeschoolers at our church, and the bulletin addressed that. Parents with questions were invited to speak with the priest, but homeschooled children would be expected to attend catechism classes with the rest of the children. Only under “exceptional” circumstances, the Priest would be willing to consider alternatives.
For a number of reasons, I’m considering not sending our child to the classes. So I’m going to be speaking to the Priest. Before I do so, I’d like to get my facts in order. My understanding is that there is Canon Law that says, parents have the right to prepare their children for the sacraments, and that while a Priest may evaluate candidates, he has no right to REQUIRE attendance at classes.
Can anyone point me to the pertinent documents?
Anyone been in a similar situation before with any tips to share?
Pax and God Bless.
