Manipulate the YouTube Algorithm

Is it those pesky Russians again?
This isn’t about the Russians. This is about a trend in content generation for YouTube that has been going on for years and the cat & mouse game of YouTube trying to stop it and how their efforts are circumvented. There are two other videos coming about Twitter and Facebook also.

So it’s about people using sensational content to monetize youtube?

That sorta described the Dem that was the source of much fake news, the one NPR did a story on. His company was just producing content to get eyeballs.

It describes lots of people. As the video says, it is done by businesses, by political parties on the right and the left, and by some just seeking to make money off of YouTube.

As the video indicated, it takes some money to do what they are doing. Not really accessible to the ave joe making posts on the weekend.

It’s probably not immediately accessible to an average person, but it would not take a lot of effort to get started. A lot of the things he described can be implemented using Google Chrome with some HTML and JavaScript knowledge. With that someone has a tool for:
  • Speech Synthasis
  • Displaying 3D graphics with random adjustments
  • Pulling top news stories
  • Pulling graphics for top news stories
Years of experience are not necessary for someone to have these capabilities.

Tried to make something this morning to do some of this. And it is easy.

I was able to make something that would find out what the most recent news stories are (it is just as easy to get the top news stories) and read them aloud. I found that my computer already had 5 voices meant for English, each of which could be modified (ex: changing pitch). I did find that Chrome wouldn’t allow speech synthesis to work until I had at least clicked on my page once. After that things worked fine. Getting a relevant image was just as easy. If I let the page do a Google Image Search on the first sentence of the article I would get back contextually relevant images. So I just let my page do that and select one at random.

I did find that I couldn’t use news stories from Bloomberg though. The script for my page encountered a captcha.
